Phil Schiller: "So we're releasing this new iSlate - TOMORROW"
(cue woops and hollers from the masses)

...one more thing, Steve's dead. Sorry about that...

?!

If he is, it's because Balmer ate him...

What kind of evidence you mean? You mean why iphoneos is not enough? Quite simple fact, I think some people would find some software like openoffice quite useful and as far as I know it has not been ported to iphone YET ;)

Your problem is that you keep thinking like Microsoft.

No really - when was the last time anyone saw Steve Jobs? All we've heard is rumours that he's back at Apple.

How much do you want to bet that he can't make the keynote due to a recent bout of ill health??

Your problem is that you keep thinking like Microsoft.

Try to "think different" and not like a raging fan-boy ;)

Well, you have to understand that he has some valid points? "iSlate" will sell even if it has iPhoneOS but it will never get "far" if it has slimmed down environment and not full operating system.

"Slimmed down environment" as in "actually designed around a touch interface on a small screen???" "Full operating system" as in "not suitable for a touch interface on a small screen?"

I think Apple has a far better grasp at what it means to make a usable mobile and/or touch computing environment than Microsoft ("You click the Start button with your finger! AWESOME!!!") ever will.

I just watched the HP slate announcement on BBC News and when he picked it up it looked like he was scared of dropping the thing (is it that much of a prototype that it's the only one?)

Also, on the "slate" name. I love the way he labelled the "Archos 9 pctablet" a "slate PC". Whilst the Archos coulld be considered a slate PC, it does seem odd that they decided to name it a "pctablet" when it could have been a "pcslate".

I can't hate Steve Ballmer because of where he works, what he does or who he works for like some here but there is a little hint of copycatting with labelling current computers already called a tablet with the slate moniker.

You can't say "I think" and call it a "fact". :)

The evidence I'm looking for are examples in the marketplace where portable devices with a "full" OS have won over those with a context-appropriate OS. Mobile devices have been common for a decade now, and I'm fairly certain there is not a single example where this result that you think is self-evident is what has actually happened.

Here's a photo of Balmer with Slate:

Are you alright?

He did the iPod keynote in September.

Well this isn't the dual screen digital journal, I have zero faith in HP creating good hardware, or even more important, a good UI over assumingly Windows 7.

No one wants to see this, we want the Courier. Or you people want the keyboardless equivalent of a MBA.

August 7 2007 for the alu, and August 31, 2004 for the G5 iMac.

I really hope you're not claiming that the G5 iMac looks anything remotely like the HP monitor...

If so, you're basically saying that the iMac invented the monitor. You know, having a screen on a stand (which have been around for a long, long time). Please tell me that's not the case. If anything, the closest they got to similar styling was the first aluminum iMac with the black border around the screen... that came out at the end of June, 2007... https://www.macrumors.com/2007/08/07/new-imacs-released/

(That's more than six months after just one of the HP monitors I mentioned and I didn't even look at their previous designs)

So what are you going to do on this HP slate? Are you serious going to try to use Word or Photoshop on a device like that? Come on now. Lets stop with this fallacy of "full" os on a multitouch device magically means it is awesome. A "full" os just means it was designed for a keyboard and mouse, which these multitouch devices lack.

You've been able to make those minor edits with everything from a Palm III up to an iPhone then by that definition. Yes, the iPhone can edit quite a few things. It doesn't do them very well though due to obvious device limitations that you seem to be letting slide for the HP slate device due to the mythical "full" os.

They did put versions of linux on them but it confused the heck out of people because linux is a second rate Windows clone with very few apps. You might as well ask why people ride bikes and not plastic tricycles to work instead of cars.

we used to run work apps on an ibook 500 g3 on trips - I'm not using Final cut here -C2D and 4 gigs of ram is not a requirement... it just needs to open and function, and like I said, I do not need a keyboard to make a few edits, not typing a novel... but I do need the software to work. Full OS to me means the possibility of compatibility with the applications I have at home and at work if I am not there.

no my Iphone edits very few files of any benefit work wise - but my laptop can not make cell calls so it serves a function. I can live with "not the best way" If it is small and light (why I have an Air) but It is not a compromise when you can not even open your file. It is not an Option when the function is a duplicate only with a new form factor yet does less - what is it we going to do? walk around with an Iphone (phone, web, apps), tablet (web, apps), laptop (everything else)? it makes no sense

yes exactly my point... I bought a netbook (XP home) for my uncle for web surf, email and online banking away from home. 2 months later he asked if it could run Quickbooks (you do not need C2D and 2 gig of ram to run that) I said sure... he now also has Office and turbo tax on it - some People do not want a plastic tricycles (some OS light+apps) - but cars (a full OS and the application they know - within reason) even if just a 2 cylinder... not the best, but you can get there if need be :D

It's comical. I've used Tablets, Convertible Laptop/Tablets, and Touchscreen's [Kiosks]. All ran Windows XP or Windows Vista. Win 7 may be better, but my experience with all of the others was abysmal. A true touchscreen device isn't moving your finger on the screen and a cursor following it close behind. Or having to "Double-click" or "DoubleTap" an icon. The entire process should be fluid.

The "Old School" adage is that devices need a full blown OS to compete. Sorry, it doesn't. It needs to WORK, and feel natural. It's all speculation on what Apple's device will look like, and what it will run until it comes out [or until they announce it later this month]. We already know what MS/HP is offering; MOTS; More Of The Same. A flat tablet, with Windows, a floating cursor, Start Menu, and Viruses on the Go...

I agree with pretty much everything what you say, if Apple will bring tablet with ARM prosessor and iphone OS, Apple has "lost" this, but if there comes tablet with x86 processor and full OS X, then maybe this might be getting intresting..

I myself need small tablet what I can take with me and just chillout for a while at cafe or something like that and I prefer to have good operating system on it.. I don't want to use appstore hell elsewhere than in my iphone..

Rumor has it that there'll be two versions - a 7" and 10".

One would imagine that the 7" will sport an iPhone like OS, while, Hopefully, the 10" would sport a more sophisticated and fortified Cocoa Multi-Touch OSX for running higher calibre apps, multi-tasking, etc.

Second guessing now, will likely prove to be as beneficial as second guessing the iPhone back in 2007.

Apparently, this has been long in the pipeline - if only a light version emerges on the 27th, this wouldn't necessarily rule out a 'Pro' model in the near future.

No need for ultimatums, at this stage.

LOL! The entire industry especially Ballmer took the "slate" bait! Totally disclosed who is desperate here.

Apple's tablet will be called Newton Pro.

IF! and I mean a big IF they do that, then that alone would overshadow everything just for the fact it would be the last of the old Apple products that was left for reinvention.

I purchased an iMac JUST because of the evolution over the original Mac design.

I would purchase a new device called Newton just because of the evolution factor.

The iSlate name sucks.

I mean since then. Since his cancer scares etc.

But since you ask, no, I am not alright. I have a really bad cold.

Sorry about your cold. Tea with lemon might help.

His cancer scare was before he did the keynote in September 2009. He received treatement and returned, and we saw him do the iPod keynote. SJ doesn't make a lot of public appearances, illness or not.

Steve Ballmer Demoing HP Slate-Style PC

After some technical difficulties resulted in delays kicking things off, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer this evening is currently giving the opening keynote for the CES conference in Las Vegas. After word surfaced that Ballmer would be introducing a slate-style tablet device tonight, many Apple watchers have been interested to see how Microsoft's offering might compare to Apple's tablet reportedly due for introduction later this month. Speculation had suggested that Ballmer might be introducing a tablet device from its "Courier" development program, but later reports tempered those expectations.

Just as Ballmer took the stage this evening, Microsoft prematurely posted a press release covering the highlights of Ballmer's presentation, and in highlighting the impact of Microsoft's Windows 7 release, the report notes Ballmer's demonstration of three new computer systems, including a brief mention of a slate-style PC from HP.Ballmer's introduction of slate-style tablet devices briefly highlighted three examples from Pegatron, Archos, and HP. In focusing on the HP slate, Ballmer offered an example of the device running a Kindle application and noted only that the product will be coming later this year, with no pricing information given. HP has also posted a brief video teaser for the forthcoming device.

Other scheduled topics of conversation in Ballmer's address, aided by Entertainment & Devices Division President Robbie Bach, are Microsoft's Bing search engine, Xbox and Xbox LIVE, Windows-based phones, connected entertainment, Mediaroom 2.0 IPTV tools, and Xbox gaming, including the company's "Project Natal" controller-free gaming experience.

Thanks, I'm trying to get over it. Haven't left the house in about 3 days because I am snowed in and my GT car is not drivable in this weather (pic).

I didn't realise Jobs appeared in September. I must say I haven't been keeping up to date over the past year as my money is tight so I try not to tempt myself.

Thanks for the info :)
