Other companies can afford to do weird experiments. If Apple released anything that sold as relatively poorly as the Surface their stock would tank and everyone would say they were doomed.

All the surfaces put together don’t make up a fraction of what Apple sells in a quarter.

Thanks for the reply. This definitely gives me pause. The biggest benefit of Windows is backwards compatibility. There are probably thousands if not hundreds of thousands of small apps and utilities for every conceivable task floating around the internet created over a long time for Windows. Even a silly little utility written for Windows 95 will work on Windows 10 (sometimes with a bit of tweaking). As a Mac user, I have always been jealous of this somewhat. But it sounds like the Surface Pro X, and all other ARM-based Windows laptops, miss out on this huge benefit.
In that case, you're safer sticking with an Intel-based system

Not only are the dual screen phones/tablets the worst idea (actually old and failed idea), but those earbuds are the ugliest I have ever seen!!

I hope for your sake, this is sarcasm...

But are the tech journos claiming the benefits of passively watching Netflix/YouTube/Twitch while, somehow with who knows what kind of human brain, actively focusing on word processing, A/V work, scientific research being sarcastic?

These new Surface Laptops compete with the MBA (per MS' keynote). What Apple supposedly is announcing later this month is their high-end 16" MBP. Two completely different class of devices.

You have no idea what new Macbooks will announced over the next three month's it is time for a macbook update so the new macbook most likely surpass the Microsoft specs just watch and see. It been like 850 days from the last Macbook update it is time.

And Apples AirPods are that much more appealing? (And Yes, I own the AirPods, great device.) My point is, it’s about the functionality, who cares what Microsofts earbuds look like. If they deliver a solid experience and fit well, seriously, who cares what they look like? [Rhetorical].

I like that Microsoft is actually being innovative and trying different things, to varying degrees of success. ACCESSIBLE SSDS!!! Awesome.

If only Apple had this kind of courage, where they bet big and Make the Mac Great Again (sorry, couldn't resist).

Still, Windows is Windows and macOS is STILL better, by a lot, in my opinion and use case. This is an unpopular idea with my teenage kids though, all of which are hardcore gamers and creatives.

Been begging me for a PC for YEARS; maybe I'll build one this Christmas so they can let me be since my 9-year-old Apple hardware is LOOONG in the tooth.

But I'm afraid I'll love it too much and leave the Mac (yeah, right).

I guess I'm conflicted on this. ;)

I much prefer the Microsoft design to Apple's Q-Tips-in-the-ear look.

Can't speak to the functionality, though if the flat surface is trackpad-like that'd be really cool.

I think the Surface Pro X innovative. Creating their own custom ARM cpu is a pleasant switch. And the keyboard and pen design is pretty slick.

They didn’t really create a custom ARM processor. It’s a modified 8cx, which means it’s using off-the-shelf ARM cores with a tweaked GPU and an NPU.

Custom would be like the Apple A Series where the entire processor is 100% Apples design.

The keyboard looks cool, but does it qualify as innovative?

Panay sort of reminded me of Steve Jobs. Not as good, but he present similarly. He's talking to you; not rushing through reading the Apple ad copies.

I like that 15 laptop, but no Windows for me....

I was really disappointed when they decided to can the Courier over some supposed internal politics. I'm still interested in the hardware concept and will be looking forward to more about it next year.

When they call surface pro x the ultimate versatile 2 in 1 but it lacks wifi6 while the cheaper not so ultimate surface pro 7 has it

Demos are obviously tightly controlled. I’ll reserve judgment until reviews come out. That’s assuming they actually ship.

I hear ya. I love photoshop on iPad. Looked great a year ago when Apple hosted it at their event in an effort to sell iPads. Oh wait.

I wish the bezels on all these devices were thin. Dell was able to do it with their XPS series and it is awesome.

The dual-fold devices would be really sexy with Samsung Note10-sized bezels.

This is one of the few areas where I think thinner would be better. I even like my women nice and curvy. ;)

I'd buy an Apple version of the Surface tablet in a heart beat that ran MacOS.
Agree. If the Surface Pro X performs and sells as well as expected, hopefully this may provide incentive for Apple to create a version of macOS for iPad Pro that's optimized for touch / Pencil.

I'm a little wary of using ARM processors though.

Microsoft today held an event in New York City to show off both new Surface devices and some new dual screen devices that are coming in the future.

MacRumors videographer Dan was in attendance at the event and was able to capture some footage of the newly announced products for an overview that can be watched over on our YouTube channel.

Microsoft's most exciting unveil was the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo, two foldable dual display devices. The Neo is tablet sized while the Duo is phone sized, and both have two displays that aren't connected together into one display but are instead displayed side by side with a hinge.

The Surface Neo features two nine inch displays that can fold out into a larger 13-inch form factor, while the Duo has two 5.6-inch displays that fold out into an 8.3-inch tablet.

You can hold these devices like a book, using one side for one app and the other side for another app, or you can fold them up into a more traditional form factor. They can also be unfolded into a laptop shape if desired.

microsoftsurfaceneo2.jpg

The Surface Neo (the larger of the two) has a detachable Bluetooth keyboard and a Wonder Bar that's similar to the Touch Bar on Apple's laptops but larger and with more functionality.

Windows 10X, new custom software based on Windows 10 but designed for dual displays runs on the Neo, while the Duo, which is in fact Microsoft's first smartphone since the Windows Phone in 2017, runs a heavily skinned version of Android.

These two devices were by far the most interesting devices Microsoft had to show off, but unfortunately, they're not launching until the holiday season in 2020 and Microsoft didn't even have prototypes available for attendees to test out.

As for what's available now, Microsoft overhauled its Surface lineup. The new Surface Pro X, designed to compete with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, features a 13-inch display and it's super slim and light. It has a cover that integrates with a new Surface Slim Pen, and there's an SSD that's user accessible.

The Surface Pro X features an SQ1 processor, LTE connectivity, 13 hours of battery life, and 2 USB-C ports. It's priced starting at $999 and will be available in early November.

Microsoft also unveiled a new version of its Surface Laptop 3, which comes in new colors and finishes, has a larger trackpad, and is equipped with a USB-C port. There's a standard 13-inch model and a new larger 15-inch model that uses AMD Ryzen Surface Edition chips.

Pricing on the Surface Laptop 3 starts at $999 for the 13-inch model and $1199 for the 15-inch model, with Microsoft planning to release both later this month.

Microsoft's final product of note is the new Surface Earbuds, which are wire-free earbuds that are designed to compete with Apple's AirPods. The Surface Earbuds have an unusual look, with an in-ear piece that fits into the ear and a circular disk that's quite large and sits in the outer part of the ear.

The disk supports gestures for controlling playback and live transcription for communicating across multiple languages. Microsoft is charging $249 for its Surface Earbuds, and they'll be available later in the year.

There will be a lot of haters here naturally, but for years now Microsoft/Google/Huawei events have been far more exciting than Apple events.

And yet here you are, paying close attention to an Apple forum that focuses on Apple product launches. Meanwhile, the Microsoft and Huawei product forums are, by comparison, dead and empty.

If you didn’t write touch screen, it almost reads as my experience of MacOS recently.

Don’t get me started on iOS...

List 3 issues you experience on a near-daily basis with macOS and iOS. Be detailed.

Touting a 2013 MacBook Air running the latest, 4GB of RAM, and running like a champ. So clearly my use case is very different from yours.

That said, Calendar on macOS is absolute trash. Sad that Apple can't see that.

Does Surface Neo allows landscape view for both screen? Because if it does then it's pretty awesome. One thing that truly bothers me about iPadOS is the inability to do horizontal split view. I'd love to be able to do horizontal split view in portrait mode.
