So Microsoft is going to use one of Apple's ideas....and then spin it to suit there purposes....

what a shock....

I wish MS would just stop....pack up....go away.

now that would be a shock...

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery so the saying goes in that manner. ;):p:D

One thing that I HATE that people comparing PC's and Mac's never take into consideration is that Apple computers can run both. The only thing to compare is the price and specs really.

I loved this quote from Mich Mathews, senior vice president for marketing at Microsoft.

“The conventional wisdom may be, ‘Hey this is motivated by Apple,’ ” she added, “but there has been a re-engineering of Microsoft.”

Typical Microsoft. No innovation whatsoever. Always got to copy what other companies create and re-invent it. Well let's hope the adverts suffer the same fate at the Zune.

it's the Microsoft checklist....

1. try something new
2. Fail Miserably
3. Look at Apple
4. Steal the idea from them
5. Call it "original"
6. Still fail to match apple's product

the redmond photocopier is still working i see.....

That ad agency has failed utterly

LOLOLOL okay let me see if I have this straight: MS paid an agency $300M to 1: switch their team from Mac to PC (it's true) then try and chuckle the world into forgetting that it's an inferior product (Phase 1). THEN they realize they're sucking air and now (Phase 2) they're saying it was the plan all along and now lolololololol they're going to draw attention to MS...by drawing even more attention to Apple. LMAO I would PAY to be on these creative meetings just to watch the agency minds do their level best to act like they believe this crap lol.

Their strategy is to get a look alike for the PC guy? That is hilarious. I guess if you can't win with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, time to copy. :D

Uhh... PCs don't run OS X, therefore you compare OS too... It's simple :D

Jerry should give the money back or donate it to a charity. Absolute rubbish.

I was kinda hoping that the Seinfeld ads would lead somewhere. I thought the writers behind them would surprise us with something clever. If this was the plan all along; fail, dudes. I already know Microsoft exists. I see the Windows logo everyday on my crappy screensaver on my crappy work computer. It's not as entertaining as Seinfeld.

They are at least running true to form! There next version of Vista will probably be named after a cat too.

You think so? I think its one of the greatest thing about Apple. You don't have to loose your head over soooo many choices. Apple makes a computer for every kind of audience. I don't know I think this small line up makes buying a mac very easy. While when you enter Best Buy you wanna kill someone.

:apple: iLike

I know it's been said a thousand times already, but let me repeat it anyway.

It doesn't matter if Apple are selling lots of computers, because unless they do release this "missing link" Mac, we'll never be able to compare sales numbers "with" and "without" this Mac. With that out of the way...

Apple doesn't make a computer "for the rest of us": screen-less but with decent specs like an iMac. It's either Mac mini or Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is out of the question for mere mortals.

So either you can buy the Mac mini which is a small desktop computer with laptop components or an iMac which is a desktop computer with a built-in screen like a laptop.

What Apple needs to release is a "small", head-less computer (doesn't matter if it's a bit bigger than the Mac mini) but with the specifications of the iMac (decent discrete GPU, 3.5" hard drive, DVD Burner).

The "minitower people" will, of course, be asking for PCI Express and PCI slots, but that's not Apple's style for consumer products (Mac Pro being in the pro league).

Another thing that would be very Apple-like would be to introduce LightScribe DVD burners across all models. In fact I'm still wondering why they haven't done so already, with built-in support in the OS for burning the labels.

As far as Microsoft's ads are concerned... does this means we'll never get closure on "The Adventures of Bill and Jerry"? :(

I was hoping for at least a five-parts miniserie, too bad it got cancelled after only two episodes.

With the intent of making it better... Not everything in this world can be original, after all. You can't fault a company from taking inspiration from its competitors, its what makes them competitors!

So... basically...

Microsoft's new campaign, instead of making me feel like I'm on LSD, is going to appeal to all of the old Mac stereotypes (i.e. it's only for the hip, urban kids who don't do real work on computers), which have been shown to be utterly wrong?

Wake up, Microsoft. I'm a preppie law student. I did not switch to a mac because it's "cool" or "fashionable."

I was a PC loyalist for 15 years. I switched because of Vista.

Maybe when your OS doesn't suck anymore, I'll switch back.

But all of the ads in the world aren't going to hasten that.

So, Seinfeld got paid 10 million for those two pathetic ads?

I won't be feeling sorry for him just yet.

Dropping them?

Why the hell did they ever pick them up in the first place

Wish I had $300,000,000 to blow on on nonsensical drivell. Will they never learn?

Reminds me of my divorce. Next time I'm just going to find a woman that hates me and buy her a house.:D

Maybe Seinfeld was a bit hard up so Microsoft thought they'd bail him out a bit to the tune of $10,000,000.

I have never understood why Microsoft does not target the weakest link in the Apple methodology - the lack of hardware choice. Apple offers 6 computers (MacPro, iMac, MacMini, MacBook Pro, Macbook and MacBook Air) and its a huge weakness.

>.>

That's not a weakness, considering MS has no offering on their own..

"Hey I'm a PC, and I'm a Mac"
"Hey Mac, why can you only (technically) run on six hardware configurations while I can run on an endless array of technological goodness from hundreds of thousands of vendors muwhahahahah!111!1!"
"So I don't have to support "an endless array of technological goodness from hundreds of thousands of vendors muwhahahahah!111!1!" -_-"

Oh boy^3

Microsoft doesn't quite get the problem - they aren't competing with Apple. They are competing against themselves.

"I'm a PC"
"And I am a PC"
"HI! ... "
"uh..."
"You sure are dull and tedious."
"So are you, PC."
"*sigh* yeaaahhh...."
"...wanna have sex?"
"Ok."

BUY VISTA!

A little late to the game, eh? All I have to say is, Microsoft better come up with an operating system to back this up. Vista sure as heck ain't it!

I agree completely. There are so many fundamental hardware markets that Apple doesn't do anything at all to serve. In fact my best friend who is a very long time Mac user is pretty sure he's about to buy an ASUS because it's exactly the type of laptop he needs and Apple doesn't have anything remotely closes to it. Asus is featherweight, 9 inch screen, 6 hour battery life, and cost $500. Apple has absolutely nothing to compete with that. And don't even get me started on the mid range desktop market segment that Apple has completely abandoned for many years now. And I myself have put off buying a new laptop for at least a year or two simply because Apple doesn't offer a laptop with a matte screen that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I don't need the extra power and features of a MBPro, I'm not gonna spend an extra $500 minimum just to buy a matte screen!

Apple's hardware is sorely not serving several market segments. 5 years ago when the computing hardware world had basically just 2 or 3 market segments, Apple served them all. But in todays world the computing hardware markets have increased in number greatly, and Apple hasn't kept up. Now that there are a growing number of important new hardware market segments in the computing world, Apple just doesn't have products to fill those major new hardware areas.

I'm really hoping the new Apple laptops that are coming out next month includes an "Air Mini" true subcompact with an inexpensive price tag, and also offers a laptop for less than $1300 that simply has a fricken matte screen option. Apple's been doing great with increasing its marketshare lately, but if they don't offer more new hardware filling these new computing habitats then Apple's not gonna be able to keep growing their marketshare for much longer.
