Doesn't seem helpful. Just a device that is not as good as either the iPad for tablet functionality nor MacBook Air for laptop functionality.

This device looks fabulous.

The iPad is good for doing simple things. I can never carry just the iPad with me. Every time I need to do some stuff, the iPad is not enough.

The MacBook Air/Pro is a full-blown computer, but sometimes it is just awkward to take it out on a meeting.

The Surface Pro 3 indeed looks like the hybrid with nearly no compromises. Looks like a great machine, and Microsoft put so much attention to detail. Apple will have a very tough time trying to top it with whatever it decides to release.

The TypeCover for the original surface's weigh 255 grams, which makes it just as heavy as the MacBook Air. Lol.

Yes, they seem to have forgotten to quote the weight of the TypeCover 3 in any of their press info.

They also forgot to put the TypeCover on that special "scientific balance scale"...

Surface Pro 3 measures 9.1 mm thick and weighs 800 grams, making it thinner and lighter than a MacBook Air, with Panay placing the two devices on a scientific balance scale to highlight the difference in weight.

3:2 at last? LOVE this aspect ratio. So much better than even 16:10.
I'm interested in the the 3:2 ratio for a tablet as well. 16:10 can be a bit unwieldy to hold one-handed in landscape and seems a bit tall to read documents in portrait. 4:3 isn't as optimal for video. 3:2 seems like a good middle ground.

Wow, that is kinda nice. That's the future of the laptop right there...well, someone's idea of the future of the laptop.

If it were running OSX, it might be worthwhile. I'd rather not have it locked up by the CryptoVirus as can happen with most Windows setups due to insanely rampant malware on that platform. Get ready to run a virus checker 24/7, update it constantly, update Windows constantly, update it some more and when you're done with that update it again. You can't use it right away because the virus checker is hogging all the CPU time and has to run every time you boot/open the thing (i.e. my personal experience running XP for so many years on my old gaming computer) and for every email you open because you are exposed constantly to malware and will wonder every single time you buy something with it whether there was a keylogger running or someone looking at you through the webcam. Yeah, I sound ridiculous, but sadly it's true and does happen every day to Windows folks and if you don't run the virus checker stuff you're taking a huge risk as you can pick the crap up just visiting a damn web site with IE.

Same as a piece of paper.

Uh, what piece of paper? Reduced to common denominator of 1, the ratios are:
Ipad: 1.333333
New Surface: 1.5
HDTV: 1.777777777 (also, many Android tabs, but not all)
Letter paper: 1.29
A4 paper: 1.3325

I chose the 2 main "standard" paper sizes for comparison.

Here are some maths:

11-inch MacBook Air, 4 GB, 128 GB SSD: US$ 899
iPad Air, 16 GB SSD: US$ 499
iPad Air Smart Cover: US$ 39
Total: US$ 1,437

Surface Pro 3, 4 GB, 128 GB SSD: US$ 999
Type Cover: US$ 130
Total: US$ 1,129

Surface Pro 3, 8 GB, 256 GB SSD: US$ 1,299
Type Cover: US$ 130
Total: US$ 1,429
Those are some hilarious maths!

article 9 months from now... MS cut price to sell unsold surface pro 3, make 1 billion write off to get rid of devices that won't sell.

Again and again MS don't seem to see their mistake.

You can't mess anything up on an iPad, it'll always work right and has every app under the sun you can imagine for anything you might want to use it for.

MS bump specs and make it thinner without addressing the issue. Windows 8 on a tablet can be broken by the user and we are talking idiot users here who comprise 99% of this market place. They need to dumb it down to the bare essentials, sell a content delivery system for everything and interconnect every device no matter the maker so they play well.

There is little to no demand for a high end tablets that run desktop software, especially worse than a laptop.

It's been said so many times but programs for touch are so different to those designed for pointing devices like mice they are bound for failure. MS have failed to see that the two don't mix and continue with this stupid compromise compromise mentality.

Yes, you indeed gets less storage. And you also get a slower processor on the US$ 799 version. But you also get a different product. Microsoft is announcing the Surface Pro 3 as a laptop replacement while still being a tablet. Here are some maths:

11-inch MacBook Air, 4 GB, 128 GB SSD: US$ 899
iPad Air, 16 GB SSD: US$ 499
iPad Air Smart Cover: US$ 39
Total: US$ 1,437

Surface Pro 3, 4 GB, 128 GB SSD: US$ 999
Type Cover: US$ 130
Total: US$ 1,129

Surface Pro 3, 8 GB, 256 GB SSD: US$ 1,299
Type Cover: US$ 130
Total: US$ 1,429

The bottom line is that Surface Pro 3 is indeed expensive, but it is nothing out of this world. There are more expensive laptops out there.

Great comparison. So if I want to use the laptop while my wife uses the tablet, what do I do with the Surface Pro?

I'm sure it's been mentioned already but regardless of what the Surface Pro 3 brings, you can still dual boot Windows/OS X natively on a Macbook Air. No tricks, no hacks, no violating license agreements and it runs Windows perfectly.
In today's software world rather it be for work or play you need more software options and Macbook Air can give it. I need OS X software that is not available on Windows and many times I just prefer to use Mac software even if it is available on Windows.

Yeah, I suspect that is accidentally on purpose >.>

"It's common knowledge" is never a meaningful thing. It used to be common knowledge that the world was flat and that the sun revolved around it.

Bad comparison. "Millions hate Windows 8" is common knowledge like "earth is a sphere revolving around the sun".

Even with the weight of the TypeCover 2, it'd weigh less than a 13" MBA.

I mean, from iOS and Android. It's a pattern I've noticed.

Ah, makes more sense.

Except one can be proven and the other has anecdotal evidence.

Is the term 'laptop' not just a general term these days? Everyone knows that it's not advised you use a laptop on your...lap...anymore.

Nobody told me. (Typing while my Macbook is on my lap).

Except one can be proven and the other has anecdotal evidence.

One can be proven by counting from 1 to several million :D
I'd say there is more than anecdotal evidence that earth revolves around the sun.

Better not do anything that kicks the fan on, my MBA gets rather heated.

I think you lost credibility right there, windows xp? How long ago was that? Windows is quite secure and security essentials is quite robust, it never slows my tablet down and I only have a lowly Atom tablet. It certainly would never slow down a Haswell processor.

Oh ha ha.

Seriously, saying that Windows 8 is "hated by millions" presupposes that people aren't buying a PC because of the OS that is on it. The PC market has matured, there's no need to update as frequently. It isn't the tablet market, where within 3 years you're going to want a new one.

Awesome presentation! Loved the Speaker.
Best presentation from Microsoft, one of the best tech presentations I have seen. I think I like the new Microsoft CEO

As a owner of a retina iPad mini, and a 2013 13" rMBP.
I will definitely be checking out this awesome device.

Looks like a great piece of tech!
If only the 256GB version was cheaper, this would be amazing.

If you install OSX on it, would the touch feature still work? Is there a hack for that already available?

It would be tricky, but not impossible to run OS X. To get touch to work, I am sure there is some kind of hack, to make it the touch work. But even if you did, OS X is not designed for touch. Windows 8 is.

What else would they be?

No RT model under $500?

Bummer.

I guess microsfot is killing windows RT...

I dont know about people but MS is comparing this product with iPad as per their marketing. So there's nothing wrong if people try to compare it's price with iPadAir Price.

Microsoft's marketing was comparing their RT tablet to the iPad.
I think Microsoft is marketing this against the MBA and MBP

I'm going to get a lot of slack for this... probably, but here goes.

The picture all the sites are using for this news is the a MacBook Air and the new Surface Pro 3 on some scales. They say they are going to challenge the MacBook Air. Again.

Anyway, my point is, in my opinion, it's a invalid compassion, one is a laptop while the other is a tablet. Compare the Pro 3 to the iPad Air!

There, I said it, the Surface Pro is a tablet. We all have our own opinions so there is mine!

Having said all that, it does look great!

Thanks for your opinion, care to explain it? Or back up why you are calling it a tablet??

Can we please stop calling it the Service Pack 3.

haha, that was bothering me as well

The verge notes the presence of a processor fan...
some sites say note..

Does it really have one?
Yes, watch the presentation

12 inch retina MacBook Pro or air better be coming at WWDC. The 11 inch air screen is garbage and the 13 pro is heavy.

This makes me very excited for WWDC. More people innovating will push Apple.

I am afraid the 12inch Macbook won't be making an appearance at WWDC

I don't get this whole "laptop replacement" nonsense. As far as I'm concerned the Surface Pro IS a laptop, so I'm not sure what it's replacing. It's just another version of a laptop. Until Microsoft advertises it without the kickstand and keyboard and in portrait orientation I don't consider it replacing anything.

I 100% agree, it is 100% a touchscreen laptop.

I think Microsoft does not have the luxury of controling all aspects of the experience, so the Surface Pro indeed competes against great ultrabooks from Toshiba, Asus, etc...

It's an ultra-ultrabook, I guess?
