Some of you guys amuse me...

It's kinda funny to see people say that the Yoga/Surface and the MacBook Air can't be compared because Apple isn't trying to be a hybrid. That's an irrelevant point. "This ad is stupid cause Apple doesn't made a hybrid" -- THAT'S THE POINT OF THE AD!!!

You know what I would love for Apple to make? A Surface-esque product that runs both iOS and OSX with shared file systems and applications. Essentially, you could switch between iOS and OSX on the fly, the keyboard would be detachable, and the device would be like an iPad on steroids that attaches to the MacBook Air's topcase. But Apple likely won't do that, because it would cut into their sales on iPad and MacBook Air. The argument from Apple is that a tablet is essentially incapable of being a laptop. But the latest Surface has proven that the hybrid product line is capable of high performance and usability.

Instead of towing the Apple line, we should think of what Apple could do to improve on what Microsoft has done with the Surface. Think how OS X could seamlessly integrate with iOS on the same device (super thin with a detachable keyboard). They've already started that in theory with the Continuity features of 10.10 and iOS 8. Rather than dismiss the idea as stupid, think of how Apple would revolutionize the idea or improve it.

I'm sure you'll all just go crazy for the hybrid idea once Apple releases one. I can see the comments now: "So innovative!" "Apple has fixed the issue of carrying 4 devices at once!"

No, the UX is different as well, due to the OS and form factor. If you think they're the same? Kindly take the blinders off.

I understand that you are a Microsoft but you have to realize there is a difference between the user interface and they pleasant user experience and Microsoft does not deliver. My in-laws are both on the third laptop and the year is not even over you got to be kidding now they're looking to me to spec them out two Mac laptops.

And then people can try to get their Wi-Fi to work on both OS X and iOS all under one device! :D

That yoga pro with windows 10 would probably be good, assuming they do justice to windows 10. Previews are so far looking promising though.

Here's what I don't get: They PC manufacturers tried this last time with the "tablet" computer. In the late 90s, through the mid 2000's, the "future" of mobile computing was the convertible tablet laptop.

When poor design, under specced hardware, and OEM crapware doomed them, they turned their attention to Netbooks.

Then Apple came along and said, "Here's what a table should look and work like." People agreed with their money.

Then Apple said, "Instead of a crappy Netbook, how about this fast, well built and reliable ultrabook?" People agreed with their money.

So now, after 4+ years of trying to compete with the iPad and the Macbook Air, the PC morons are back at it again. Trying to combine two products into the single product that they couldn't design right before. And it's the same damn product from 1999!!

15 years ago, the technology did not exist to make a hybrid device that was usable. With computers like the MacBook Air or Yoga 3 or Surface, the technology has now caught up with the idea of a hybrid device. Your argument made sense 15 years ago, but that argument is null now.

Except it isn't. The form factor is different, the internals are different, the screen is different, the OS is different. There's nothing that makes this the same product of yesteryear.,

The original commenter in this thread posted a very telling article, that I have linked below. Try to read past the misleading headline, and dig into the gist of the article, which shows a PC OEM doing what they usually do: Turning technology into a mis-mash of poorly integrated hardware, and poorly conceived software/drivers that end up being a half-assed, compromised user experience.

I'm not going to dig through ancient reviews of decade+ old "tablet" computers to do your research for you that show roughly the same reaction (although they were a little more forgiving, because nobody had yet showed them that technology based in user experience was possible). Besides, it would be a waste of time, since your signature clearly shows your bias.

Yep, I'm that Microsoft guy that spent 500$ on an iPad 2 when it came out and later another 400$ for myself. I spent 2300$ on a MBA in 2012. Such a Microsoft guy that I paid money for an iPhone 4S when it was new and an Android phone. I even bought a Chromebook at one time.

But apparently having a Surface makes me "a Microsoft guy".

As for a "pleasant UI"? I have met a lot of people who like Windows 8 on touch devices and even on laptops without touch. It's subjective.

As for your family ... errr ... good for them? I don't know all of the details, but they should get whatever they want. If that's a Mac, that's a Mac. It will come with different headaches from a normal PC, and the cost might be more. Of course, I'm sure that you had nothing to do with the want to change. ;)

When all else fails, claim bias and show no facts.

Then why are they still creating the same crap they did 15 years ago!?!

Repeating a lie with an article that has no bearing on it won't make it true.

Great ad! But still a flawed strategy IMO—trying to merge desktop and touchscreen. Just because you can turn your laptop inside out, doesn't mean you should. :)

lets not forget the bombardment of bloat ware and spyware;)
No thank you!

The proof is in the declining sales of windows computers. The people have voted with their pockets

This is just MS missing the boat yet again.

Surface Vs. iPad? Apple built a tablet, designed to function as a tablet. Microsoft gets the whole thing wrong and compares some half-assed hybrid that neither functions well as a tablet or a computer to Apple's tablet. Fail.

Yoga Vs. MBA? Apple built a computer, designed to function as a computer. Microsoft gets the whole thing wrong and compares some half-assed hybrid that doesn't function well as a computer to Apple's computer. Fail.

Will MS ever get it? Their software seems to turn more and more to garbage to boot with ever release.

No thank you!

I have seen several laptops without bloatware and spyware. This one has some of the first, though, and it's disappointing. I don't know if the Yoga comes with spyware. Or were you saying all laptops come with those?

Could you provide details as to what makes it "garbage" and "half assed"?

Interesting ad.... At least it is not like those ads that Samsung does against Apple.
Yes, absolutely. Something many people don't seem to understand. MS is highlighting product features, not trying to make actual users (aka: people) feel bad about themselves. Novel!!

Nah, more like a quarter. Another quarter will be attacking the ad itself. The third quarter will be people explaining about how it is irrelevant.

And in those posts, a huge portion will be attacking Windows for some reason (usually without reason)

And the last qtr is Goff, telling us Windows is better than OSX.

And yet Lenovo still sells more computers than Apple. I suppose if sales are an indication, Apple is losing...

I don't know how you figure that but let's not forget iPad is a computer also and since they're going there with the touch technology, Lets just include the iPad in the number. Oh and if you want to talk profits? do you really want to talk profits levano sell computers a low margins not sustainable in the long run.

I've thought of this too ....

Honestly, I suspected we would have seen it already, based on additions to OS X like "Launchpad" a while back.

The fact it never happened tells me Apple is probably mulling over the pros and cons, and realizes it would cut into sales more than it would increase profits. (If you convince users they can get by with only 1 Apple device at a time where they're averaging between 2 and 4 of them now? That's not a good thing for corporate profits.)

Since you can already run iOS emulators under OS X for developers to test apps out -- it's obvious OS X could incorporate iOS compatibility as part of it.

The hybrid idea always carries a risk with it too; the "Jack of all trades, master of none" problem. If Apple ever decides to build one of these, it has t be sure there aren't any real compromises in the design. Otherwise, users who already own multiple devices will argue how sticking with those is superior for reasons X,Y, or Z and won't buy into the change.

Not any more than smartphones are.

My point was more that sales don't make it better, nor do profits. A better product is a better product, regardless.
