Microsoft has an academic alliance with nearly every major higher education institution. I have yet to find one where you can't get Microsoft software and many others for dirt cheap.

I can't say the same for Apple's education pricing and programs lately. You seem out of the loop if you can only think of this recent Windows 7 one or the Back to School program Apple runs as it.

I'll admit this one from Microsoft has gotten some media attention but it is SOP at most schools. It feels bizarre for it to get this much attention.
As I'm well aware of MS's edu discounts, it was the very large percentage which I found commendable. However, why must they overcharge everyone else? OEMs aren't cuttin' it enough for 'em?

I guess Microsoft doesn't expect the retail market to be large enough. Not to mention how flexible the retail licenses are compared to OEM or upgrade and the technical support they provide for retail.

It's expensive but software is their money maker. There isn't a hardware subsidy.

Hello. Student Here.

Just thought I might let you know that every student at my university has had access to the full version of Windows 7 Professional for free since September 14th.

Suckers =P.

Oh, I am totally jealous.

Wait, no...actually I'm not. ;)

Thinking of installing it on my MAC

never installed another OS on my Mac, is windows 7 able to be installed on a partition on my iMAc?

So then, perhaps we ought to stop bitchin' about Apple's premium hardware prices, since their prices are much more competitive by comparison.

Yes! You can even run it side-by-side with OS X using VMWare Fusion or Parallels.

It depends on what you do. There's nothing stopping you from buying an OEM license and providing your own support not to mention obeying the limitations of it.

I have my MacBook since I prefer Apple's portables. I have my Windows desktops for the real heavy lifting I need done and the hardware flexibility.

Who is being over charged?

On the flip side I think MBP buyers are being over charged.

I think it is all relative.

Then their underlying message is: "Retail is for Suckers."

It is.

I don't buy my Apple needs retail unless I have to. I only bought Snow Leopard retail because it was available at the local shop and at discount. Otherwise I would have waited for a deal online.

I have half a dozen Windows OEM, academic, and retail licenses to use. I'm about to add the Windows 7 ones later this year.

Believe me Leopard is an upgrade right now from 10.6. I'm just too lazy and stubborn to do it.

What gets me is people complain about the costs of the initial purchase of a Mac being too high. When in fact you pay the same thing if not more trying to keep your OS up to date in a legal manner.. No wonder Apple has less pirated SW, because they make it affordable even a teenager could buy their own OS to upgrade. Every day I come home from work and use my Mac Book I am so happy, I just wish I could get one at the office.. :D

Hence, no need for Registry, and being treated like a suspected criminal.

We've been over this a million times.

You've already paid Apple off with their hardware not to mention their EULA on OS X and blocks to prevent its installation on non-Apple branded computers.

You know it, I know it, and everyone else does. Don't you get tired of it?

Tired of what? I was merely sympathizing with someone else. Registry is BS, regardless.

Right...

It's just the same cycle that Page 1 has been stuck painfully so for this past year more so than normal. I tried to explain to to LagunaSol but that just ends up on some bizarro world projection debate and witch-hunt.

We're our own worst enemies.

DO NOT BUY IT FELLOW MACRUMORS!

Teach Microsoft a lesson. They cannot keep copying Apple to survive!

Boycott Windows 7!!!

No worries there I have no use at all for it.

If they did allow it would it not harm their reputation as a great builder of computers? I mean if you let everyone install your OS on any computer out their you would have all kinds of junk out their running your OS and to me I think it would be bad. I was a PC user for over 15yrs and just recently switched to a Mac in the past two years. I have never used a computer that gave me so much joy to use as my Apples do, I own three now. I use a PC at work and even though it has XP Pro on it, I still hate to use it.

I paid to play in Apple's garden. Should I be expecting something else?

Perhaps the official W7 Upgrade Chart has been the cause of some confusion:

I've got to admit, that's pretty funny!

Although I was trying to explain to a friend yesterday that if he wants to legally upgrade his Macbook running Tiger to Snow Leopard, he would have to buy Snow Leopard and iLife and iWorks, instead of just Snow Leopard.

That got me some very confused expressions!

Imagine MS saying that if you want to upgrade from XP to Win7, you'd have to buy Office and some other applications at the same time... some would call that a scam.

Perhaps while looking at the actual upgrade path:

Tiger --> Leopard (iLife, iWork, and Keynote included) --> Snow Leopard,

it all seems a bit more reasonable.

Apple considers iLife and iWork to be value-added software. Sadly it might not be the same for everyone.

If they did allow [non-EFI-installation] would it not harm their reputation as a great builder of computers?

Nope. Apple-brand computers will suddenly have to have a higher standard for their price-point. True, one pays for outdated EFI 1.1 (or summat) to run OSX, but beyond that....

Depends. Infections on OSX are generally started by the user installing a video codec. Don't know why viruses are loathe to OSX, but there's something about how mach kernel works, not just market share. Market share virus explination = bovine scatology.

An OS does what it does. Maybe its time to upgrade that P4 machine :D

OUTDATED? In comparison with the BIOS found in PCs EFI is modern..

LOL.. It's a Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHZ with 4gb ram, and it's still a POS..:D

Defrag? ;) lol, bet you already did it. Could be a POS HDD, but you know your setup better then I do.

Well, Apple modded it to its current state. Nothing but Intel's original firmware, a lock for OSX, and mainly as Eidorian said, a Bootloader. Also, if you want updated, check out UEFI 2.3. Spec published in May this year... I think
