Entourage is still reporting 12.0.0 after applying the update.

Powerpoint, Excel,Word are all reporting 12.0.1

I installed the German version of the update and Entourage reports "Version 12.0.1 (080305)".

.. and Word is still a lot slower than Pages... :( - I really hope, they do something about it!

The first app to load (whichever one) takes 8 seconds. After that any apps open up in one bounce, and roughly 2 - 3 seconds. I have to admit that this update has improved loading speed for me. No question.

All apps (including Entourage) report the current level as 12.0.1

Justin

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted. I just rebooted and now my startup times are:

Word 35 seconds
Excel 8 seconds
PowerPoint 7 seconds
Entourage 10 seconds

Are you quitting Word before launching Excel? I think that some shared libraries might be loading which allows for the subsequent apps to load faster in your situation.

Also, do you have anything else running? I NEVER have only MS Office running. I am always multi-tasking and if it can't open these apps quickly when I have other apps open then they become useless to me. Again, I point to how quickly iWork apps open. Also, Safari, Mail, etc. All of these apps open ridiculously fast after their initial launch.

Updated. Didn't notice any improvements, but I didn't have any problems to start with.

Still takes 25+ seconds to load fresh.

However, since installing my fans have been on full blast, even though the CPU usage nothing is using over 2%, though the bars of the CPU usage are very high

Ah well, might be coincidence.

Guess I'm one of the lucky ones...all of the apps (including Word) are pretty quick on my machine.

And my Entourage says 12.0.1...

Just ran the update on my iMac and it reports Entourage at 12.0.1, while my MBP is reporting Entourage at 12.0.0 still after the update.

No differences in configuration other than my MBP has more mail stored locally. Both are setup for Exchange.

Short of re-installing the entire Office suite, anyone know of a way to re-apply the update or remove then re-apply?

BTW-
For those who have installed the 12.0.1 update...please report the new version of Entourage.

mine is still listed as 12.0.0 (Entourage only), yet the alerts have been fixed.

((Word, PP, and Excel all report 12.0.1))

Happened to me too. Only Xcell and Powepoint updated. Entourage and Word did not. Also after a bit of use, Entourage started acting up and gave me all sorts of error to the point where it would not even start anymore. I had to completely erase office, reboot, and then reapply the update. After this point all was up to date as it should have been and working ok.

Interesting, I have two machines, and I applied the same update file to both from the same downloaded .dmg file.

On my Mac Pro it says 12.0.1 (080305)
On my MacBook Pro is says 12.0.0 (071130)

I noticed when I installed on the second machine (MBP) the amount of space it said it would need was lower on the MBP than the Mac Pro, sounds weird doesn't it. I wonder if MS F***D up and screwed up the update.

How could they possible know the difference and install something different on different machines? Both are running Office 2008 ?????

Weird, I wonder if it was really updated??? :(

Happened to me too. This update broke my Entourage + Word. Had to remove office, reinstall from scrath and reapply update. It was ok at that point. No wonder this is not on Autoupdate yet.. MS is prolly testing the waters..

That's actually a problem with Apple's spaces implementation and not Microsoft's suite. Every other app does the same thing. Seriously, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk.
actually i am pretty sure I know what I am talking about and how to use spaces doing a search you will find the it documented here and on google... office 2008 has a problems with spaces and expose... even if word is set to appear in all spaces... and btw terrible haute smells like $%^&* ... thank you have a nice day :apple:

EDIT
and for a bit of proof for those that choose to flame before being productive....

I think your MBP has issues. I dont use spaces, but my machine runs fine and I have multiple word/excel docs open most of the time

This has nothing to do with his MBP. Try using spaces and you'll see the same thing. It is a known bug that MS Word 08 has with spaces.

This is not meant to target you specifically. I'm just getting tired of reading posts that make it sound like the people that have long load times have something wrong with their machines as opposed to this app being coded by bad programmers.

Personally I don't think luck has anything to do with it. I think that people simply use their machines in different ways. If you were running the same apps on your machine that I run on a regular basis then I think Office would load like the bloated pig that it is.

I shouldn't have to have all of my processing power and memory free in order to launch a frickin' word processor.

I am a programmer so let me give you a real world example that I heard from a friend of mine the other day. He had to help a customer that was experiencing really long load times with one of their custom applications. It turns out that the original guy at his company that wrote the app had a for loop that ran every time the app launched with a Θ(n^2) runtime and was running over a data set that contained thousands of entries. Basically, it was checking for duplicates every time it loaded a new entry so that it could simply update the original entry. Well, to make a long story short he simply changed the data structure to a map and cut the runtime to Θ(log n) I believe. The app went from taking around 30 minutes to launch to seconds.

Good programming makes a huge difference. The simple fact is that even those of you that have pointed out short launch times are still listing times that are an order of magnitude longer than the launch times for iWork apps in some cases. MS Office launches like it is stuck in molasses, plain and simple. Something is wrong with the code and it needs to be fixed. It needs to be debugged using some analysis tools to see exactly what is holding it up by some people that actually know how to perform testing.

Re-installed Office and re-applied the update and Entourage now reports 12.0.1 along with Word, Excel, and PPT

Only thing I noticed is that when I removed Office the Office2008_en_entourage_12.0.1.incremental.pkg was not found in the trash {using the Office removal tool}. This leads me to believe the first time I did the update, for some reason this package did not get installed period {pretty obvious}.

Just removed Office on my iMac and did the same and saw the above package removed and placed in Trash. {iMac never had an issue with update initially}.

For those of you reporting Entourage at 12.0.0 or any of the Office apps not reporting 12.0.1, you might want remove and re-install. They aren't actually getting updated.

Yeah I was working on a Word document and the app just closed. Good thing thing I saved it. This better fix it.

Mine seems to be updated, my alerts are finally working properly now...yet it reports 12.0.0 only on Entourage.

The only way to reinstall is to uninstall the entire Office Suite and reinstall...not really worth it as long as my alerts are working.

Anyone notice this?

When you close Word it appears in Finder (upper left corner) that there is some other words appearing as you close. It only appears for a split second but it looks as if something else is there.

Thought I was through with MS

Pages and Numbers all the way. Got rid of MS Office 2008 because Pages is so much better than Word, then got this crazy excel spreadsheet that wouldn't open in Numbers and had to re-load Office 2008. So glad that I need this silly program on my HD on the off chance that some chump with a PC will send me a god-awful Excel spreadsheet or f'd up word doc. Bugger all.

Wrong Version number of Application after install

Greetings and Salutations

I have seen an equal number of folks reporting the apps being upgraded or not being upgraded.

All four applications should be updated to 12.0.1. If you are not seeing that, could you please try a couple of things.

1) restart your machine. We did find in testing that sometimes the Finder's Desktop database did not refresh and reflect the new version.

2) launch the application and check the About box. See if the version number is correct there.

If the version number is not correct, please email me back (from the link on the left) with the name of the application (exactly as it appears on your machine) and the installer log.

You can get the installer log from the Console. Launch the Console (under Utilities), and from the list of logs (if it doesn't appear choose the button on the left in Console) look under the section /var/log/. You will find the install log listed in that section.

The MacRumors mail box only holds about 150 items (so the UI says), so please only respond to this item so I can help folks out who are not getting the update.

Thanks

Microsoft AutoUpdate in Office 2004 and Office 2008

Greetings and Salutations

Office 2004 and Office 2008 use two different applications (named the same thing) to look for updates.

Office 2004 AutoUpdate lives in the Applications folder, and will only find updates for itself; Office 2004; and the beta XML Converters.

Office 2008 uses version 2 of the AutoUpdate application, and that application lives in /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0. This version is to be used by all new Microsoft applications so that there is a single application on your machine for updating rather than one for each application.

Hope this helps

Hallelujah! I can now maximize the window in Excel without bringing the whole system down. I have a 3.0/8800gt.

Restarting the machine helped me. When I first installed the update, Excel still crashed. After a restart (forced on me by Excel crashing) it works fine.

My Entourages reflects the update (12.0.1) as well.

By the way, on my computer Words takes 5 secs to load and Excel take 4 secs.

Microsoft Office 2008 Update from the AutoUpdate

Greetings and Salutations

As folks have noticed, the update is not available yet through AutoUpdate. We are just finishing the testing on the AutoUpdate and hope to have it soon.

It contains the same fixes as the update, so for those who would like to get the update now, please use the URL http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx to find all the language updates.

Thanks

Update cannot find Office version to update - ways to solve

Greetings and Salutations

I talked in a previous post about helping folks out and trying to find the causes for the lack of Office being found; here I would like to offer some troubleshooting ideas for folks.

NAME
-----
The Apple Installer technology that we are using requires that the application and the folder they reside in maintain their original names. If you have renamed the applications or the folder they reside in, you'll need to revert it to the original names.

LOCATION
------------
While you drag Office anywhere after an install, the Apple Installer technology will not find a copy of Office that is not on a bootable partition. So if you have Office on a spare partition with no OS on it, you'll need to move it to a partition that has an OS on it.

LANGUAGE
-----------
The updater only works on the language it was intended for; therefore, if you installed Italian Office, the German updater will not work for it. Because we use Apple's Installer the UI will match the UI of your OS so judging which updater you got by the UI of the Installer will not work.

MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES
------------------------------------
If you have multiple language versions of Office on your machine, then you'll want to put the one you wish to update in your Application folder; update it; then either rename it or move it out and put the next language in the Application folder.

The Installer will search for Office, and if the first one it finds is a different language than the updater it will not keep searching for copies with the matching language.

I hope this covers most everyone's issues

Size of Update reported by the Installer

Greetings and Salutations

One issue reported a few times was the size of the install of the update as reported by the Apple Installer.

The Apple Installer is going to look in the packages of the update to determine what is there and how much space it takes. It will then look at your current install to see what is needed to be installed, and from that information it will calculate the amount of space needed.

Anyone providing installer packages will not have any say in this, it is all done by the Installer code.

I hope this explains why folks are seeing different size amounts in the installer.
