I have a small business and, while I still rely on Office in some cases, I'm moving away from it more and more with every new update to iWorks. I use mail and see no issues or compatibility problems. All presentations are done in Keynote and any type of promotional document is done in Pages. They are both easier to use and produce much better looking documents.

I doubt I'll ever update to another version of Office.

Not very well.

I guess now it's public....

- Performance overall is good.
- The look and feel as you can see is better, although the readability of new mails is a little difficult.
- it's severely lacking a huge number of features that the Windows client has had for a long time

I am a little disappointing at the new Outlook. It has a better interface, and is nice to see that. However, I haven't yet noticed any new features and it is still 32-bit.

Why would Outlook need to be 64 bit?

It doesn't to. However, it seems that Microsoft did not even took the time to convert it to 64-bit. I may be wrong, but all Microsoft seems to have done is revamping the interface of Outlook. And that is too little for four years.

Are you able to say if the drawing canvas is in the upcoming Word, and the new equation editor in the upcoming Powerpoint? All the sharing and such features are meaningless to me, those two are essential. Thanks!

Is there a possibility that Microsoft released Outlook right now just because of the photos that leaked? And that it announced the approximate release date for the next Office just because the PPT presentation leaked?

not touched the rest of the office apps unfortunately.

very likely yes.

Well, I wonder why Microsoft was delaying the launch of Outlook if the software was ready for release then... Or perhaps Microsoft just put new clothes (the new interface) on Outlook 2011 and released it to the public, hence the lack of new features.

I also noticed that the new Outlook is version 15.3. What happened to version 15.0 and why was it never launched? Outlook 15.3 for Mac is ahead of Outlook 2013 for Windows, which is still version 15.0. And I wonder whether the new Office apps will be version 16 when they finally get a release in H2 2015, since they will be released near Office version 16 for Windows. In this case, Office 15 for Mac will be a never-released intermediate version.

Possible. I think there's an equal possibility that the photos and ppt were deliberately leaked by MS as well.

I can't be the only one (OK, maybe I am) who is looking carefully at what MS is doing with Office for Mac and ready to jump ship to something else (or pigeonhole MS Office use to what is absolutely essential). If so, then this gives people something to hold out for. THAT is classic Microsoft.

Earlier betas were 15.0, 15.1 etc.

I guess they'll reset the final release back to 15.0?

I installed Outlook 365 yesterday over my Outlook 2011 and it was quick and easy--imported all settings, etc. LOVE the new, cleaner UI. I'm a minimalist at heart, so I like the streamlined look. I didn't use a lot of advanced features, so I'm not missing anything. Does seem a good improvement over Apple Mail though, so I'm good.

I just had Word quit "because it encountered a problem" while taking notes in class and lost my notes!!!

You don't need Word to take notes. There are software more appropriate for this purpose.

I know, I use notability and OneNote often, but for certain classes all I need is a structure multilevel bullet list and Word is fine for that.

Have you tried Evernote? Or OmniOutliner? Or Circus Ponies Notebook? They are all good for taking notes.

And now Microsoft released Office apps for the iPhone. The only one that is still lagging behind seems to be the Mac platform.

I'll second this. I LOVE Evernote. It takes a while to set up the way you want it, but once you do, it's extremely versitile. I'd encourage you to try it. Works great for me for notes, collections, receipts and PDFs. i use it right along with Office.

What's sad is that all I want is a functional office suite across all of my devices. Office for iPad is great and now we have an office for iPhone that doesn't suck.

The only thing ruining this "harmony" is Office for Mac. It's so bad that I often resort to Pages depending on the project at hand. Office on iOS and iWork on OS X just won't work. I wish they'd get Office for Mac out before Q3 of 2015, but I doubt it. I don't even care about feature parity right now, all I want is better performance and an updated Excel engine.

I got another "Word encountered a problem and had to quit." I'm thinking a Yosemite patch is necessary.

I had a few of these under Mavericks as well. Perhaps Microsoft is preparing an update, as there is plenty of time before the next Office arrives.

What is really sad for me is that I want a decent Office suite for my US$ 2,000 laptop, and I have none. I can choose between an old buggy Office suite (Office 2011), a stripped-down Office suite (iWork) or a free cluttered Office suite (OpenOffice/LibreOffice/NeoOffice).

I would prefer to have a decent Office suite on my Mac instead of using it to answer calls or SMS messages.

Heh, I smiled at that jab. I agree. Macs used to be the niche device used by professions and some "hipsters" I guess you could say. When I got my first Mac years ago it did seem very professional and had some amazing software (iMovie '11, iPhoto '11, Page '09, DVD Maker, etc.). Even Office 2011 was good for it's time. Sadly, it's gone downhill to the masses and to follow iOS.

Don't get me wrong, many of the new features are great. Fullscreen, multiple display enhancements, under the hood advancements, and I love SMS relay, but it seems more and more like OS X is just for the masses with little regard to "power" users.

That is completely subjective, but at least Windows wears many hats; it's a personal computing device, a work hours, a VM managing station. OS X can be these things, but with all these cosmetic changes and choice of new features (like you said, SMS Relay over better enterprise support or office suite) is troubling.
