I tried using touch, nothing worked. Can someone explain how to correct the .plist issue? Also, how do you duplicate a application? it is the same as create a alias? Sorry, I bought a mac to not deal with these issues:) leave it to microsoft...

You duplicate an app by selecting the app in the finder, then File/Duplicate from the menu (or right-click, Duplicate). Not the same as Make Alias.

If "touch" is not working, try making a duplicate, putting the original in the trash and emptying, renaming the duplicate to the original name, and re-launching.

Huh? Sorry if this comes across as excessively noobish, but how is this touch thing supposed to make the update happen? I did it and the terminal just says this:

-bash: /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Excel.app: is a directory aasu-105-230:~ coreybonsant$

I opened up Word and it definitely doesn't look Retina to my knowledge. I compared it to my Pages to be sure.

What did you actually type in the terminal?

My update keeps failing

For some reason my update keeps failing. Yet the pictures in the tool bar no longer match what the really are (see picture). What happened?

Thanks to individuals on the thread. What a lame update. Had to do touch command to each M$ app to make it go retina.

sudo touch /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2011/Microsoft\ Excel.app
sudo touch /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2011/Microsoft\ Word.app
sudo touch /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2011/Microsoft\ PowerPoint.app
sudo touch /Applications/Microsoft\ Office\ 2011/Microsoft\ Outlook.app

I use Excel in Parallels anyways. Super fast, clean, and has all the same shortcuts the whole world is familiar with.

I was typing touch, pressing enter, and then dragging and dropping the apps into the terminal. :p I went back and instead typed touch, dragged and dropped the app, then pressed enter to solve the problem. Word and Power Point are now looking notably better, and the icons up top are looking prettier too. The white backgrounds in Pages and Keynote look way better (at least for me) than in Word and Powerpoint though. For some reason Excel won't go retina though, and it's easy to tell when comparing its icons to Word and Powerpoint.

Ok, nevermind. I must have done something earlier to mess this up, but I found another Excel in my Trash named 'Microsoft Excel 12.10.25 AM'. I took it out and opened it, and it's retina! I strangely have a retina and non-retina Excel on my computer, but problem solved. :D

THANK YOU. I didn't know how to deal with escaping the spaces. This works perfectly. Definitely a botched update - I wonder when they're going to fix it.

Pretty impressed with Microsoft, that was a quick turnaround. MS and Apple working in harmony, who woulda thunk.

How is this a quick turn around? It's been months and many other apps are already Retina. Plus, the update is messed up. I'm still not seeing retina. Microsoft can't even get their update correct!!

Worked for me too! Thank you very much! What is the sudo touch command doing?

Search hanging Outlook 2011

Is anyone still experiencing serious issues where Outlook 2011 searches take forever and hang Outlook whilst doing so?

I was hoping this first Office update since Mountain Lion was released would resolve the issue, but of course, it is as bad as ever.

I have once again re indexed Spotlight (which doesn't seem to be issue as all messages show there instantly) & rebuilt my database, both to no avail.

This is making Outlook unusable. All my messages are stored locally, no Exchange accounts are linked.

I have searched everywhere and cannot find a solution, can anyone point me in right direction?

and rest assured: Retina Photoshop will not be a free update.

John Nack is on record as saying the retina changes would be in a point release, IOW, no additional charge. Obviously a lot of work goes into tracking down all the resources that need to have retina components (look at the Microsoft Office retina update for examples), so expect these to take some amount of time.

Don't forget that Apple had a head start on this, so they could be ready when the rMBP was released.

I installed from AutoUpdate and used the "sudo touch" fix. Only some parts of the apps are retina compatible; is this what everyone else is observing?

Most notably, the fonts drop down menu and the hover box in the top toolbar are blurry/ugly whereas the text area is crisp and beautiful.

I also attempted the osxdaily fix for retina compatibility a week ago.

I am very happy with this update. However I wonder, I don't think it's in Microsoft's interest to support word for mac as they need to push windows 8. And I don't see apple doing the same to support apple stuff on windows.

Hopefully the decision to support word on mac will be here to stay but I fear the worst for the future.

Thank you!

This worked for me. Typical Microsoft action.......

Unfortunately, it does not fix the problem that Outlook always jumping into the inbox, if it syncing with Exchange Server ...
