Does someone else also have the problem that Powerpoint always crashes whenever one tries to open a .ppt file? Weirdly that only applies to Powerpoint, all the other apps (Word, Excel and Outlook) work fine (and look considerably better).

Can anyone confirm or try to open a .ppt file after updating?

No problems opening a PPT file here, but I only had one handy.

Existing .ppt and .pptx files open just fine for me after updating. (Word and Excel documents are ok, too.)

That tends to happen when another company passes you by like you're standing still, especially when that company got there by innovating and you got where you were by stifling all competition early on to get a virtual monopoly on the computing world. I mean what incentive was there to innovate at Microsoft when you had over 100 million customers to just buy your updates regularly a decade ago while Apple languished with like 3-4 million users. Even if pirated a lot, Microsoft STILL made a KILLING selling Win98 to 95 users and then crappy WindowsME and then XP to most of the known world up to and beyond Vista's time. But now despite overall numbers, they've been passed up in pure capital by pure innovation and since much of the world seems to prefer mobile and pad computers at the moment, at least, that equals a sinking ship for M$ in the long run so they are now frantically trying to catch up (maybe too much with Windows8 perhaps changing too much too soon).

I could assure you that Apple is going to fall down before Microsoft.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

really struggling here...
I have tried and tried to get the touch app to work but I am still getting permission denied, I am sure that I am using the right command so why does it work for everyone else?
Many thanks

What goes up, must come down. As for Apple going down before Microsoft — that's your personal opinion and, obviously, speculation. Nobody knows. Move along, troll.

OK so you need to make a copy of the executable and run from that. What a really ridiculous way to have to update, they should at least mention this.

Works now after that.

When i first ran the Office update I was on 10.8.1, and the update did not work (Office still looked blocky). I then ran the OS X update to 10.8.2 and re did the Office update and all the Apps work fine. Not sure if the OS X update made the difference of if I just needed to run the Office update twice.

It is impressive that lots of Mac users here write bad things about Microsoft and then they can't even update the software by themselves, like... they click automatic and they think it's done. Then they complain it doesn't work.

IDIOTS

You're the problem.

Lol... I love the kind of people who are just so self-assured of their own superiority, and so certain that everyone around them is stupid, that they post something like this... And then it turns out that no, there really is a problem (the plist problem as outlined and solved in this thread). Adorable.

Lucky for all of us that others on threads like this one actually listen to other people when they say there's a problem, and look at possible solutions, rather than just declaring everyone else an idiot.

You're the problem.

Prey, do tell more!

Regarding the $9.95 Office for Mac 2011....it was through work. They have the program with Microsoft, that if you have Office 2011 on your work computer, you can get a license and download for home use for only $9.95. After they verify your eligibility and you enter a code, you simply pay $9.95 and download it. You can choose from Windows or Mac versions.

Pretty much a no-brainer for me....

UPDATE: Powerpoint seems to work fine after all, had to restart my Mac, now everything seems in order. Thanks anyway guys! :)

Btw.: Entire system seems to be running much faster than before after 10.8.2. Adding the Retina update for Office makes the entire day very rewarding in terms of updating. ;-)

The "touch" trick worked for me. The weird thing is that while almost everything is now retina crisp, the Styles that shown up in the Format box in the ribbon are still definitely non-retina.

Thank you for the "touch" tip. Everything looks way crispier and smoother than before :D
And congrats to MS, for releasing this even after saying there was no prediction on the update.

You're the problem.

If you love people like, then you're just envious, because you're calling me the problem and as it turns out, love+problem = separation. So... just get a life.
I was referring to automatic updates and it is working now, as it seems.
So you're talking about another problem, which may have happened to you. So good luck with all your experience in this website and buying Apple since 2007, although it didn't help you today if not by other people, eh? Nor gives you discounts on Apple products.
lol

Dear God... Excel looks so friggin' good.

Some graphics assets still looks low-res and blurry, but texts look so sharp...

Suddenly looking at rows and rows of data become much less tiresome and much more exciting!

Try "sudo touch /path/to/office/applications.app" and enter your OS X password when prompted.

Terminal just tells me that I'm not in the sudoers file and that the incident will be reported...

I have an administrator account that I don't use, and my account that I use everyday. I tried typing the password for that account, but it said "Sorry, try again."

I tried going into my administrator account, but the office apps were all retinized already, I guess because they've never been launched under that account before.

I give up. No update should be this much work. I guess iWork continues to reign on this rMBP! Thanks for the tip, though! :)

Not a retina MBP user, but I think it is awesome that MS is supporting this small user base. They could have pushed retina support as an Office 2014 feature. I would not have blamed them at all for that because Office 2011 came out before the RMBP.

I'll stick with iWork thanks...:p

I am trying to, but Apple's ignoring of iWork for more than three years for OSX is starting to bother me. It works okay, but MSFT is going to get my business again soon as long as iWork for the desktop languishes.

And yeah, it works. I get that (anticipating the snark back). But the UI is dated, and some silly mistakes need to be rectified, and as any software program just needs some refresh to help with speed and stability.

It's not 100% perfect, but it's just about 99%. The text and most icons are rendered in retina, but this seems to not be. Not a big deal though.
