Ugh. A crappy company like that passes Apple. I don't care about Apple anymore and would like to see them passed, but only by anyone else. Seriously, Microsoft is stuck in the early 2000s, even with the new CEO, and everyone working in Silicon Valley knows that. Every piece of software they make is considered a cancer that people are trying to figure out how to rid their companies of.

Except for Excel. Excel rocks.

Well if you bought Apple stock instead of Apple products back then...

Really? Seems a lot of corporations are going the o365 route, that's a constant requirement in most job postings in my field.

Also, wasn't buying Apple products nor stock "back then".

Revisionism is when history is rewritten. Citing an little known fact is not revisionist.

You are not citing a fact. You are comparing two different price ranges. In 2012 the top of the line iPhone was offered from 649 to 849$, in 2018 the top of the line iPhones range from 999 to 1499. That is quite a price hike you prefer to ignore. Therefore revising history by adding a false point of reference.

If Apple would unleash the power of the iPad by running full Mac OS and not iOS, they would clobber Microsoft with that move alone. Come on Apple cause you could be heading down!

Yeah, no big deal there. So, rewrite MAC OSX for ARM CPUs and maintain two versions of OSX? Or throw all the wrenches into the machinery at once and dump Intel and Mac-PC compatibility.

Confuse everyone and rip apart your product ecosphere, when Apple *could* just open up iOS enough to make it useful to all its “content creators” that need a file management system. I don’t know how the iPad got as big as it has without a real and useful way to get files on and off the device.

I would argue that people likely don’t want OSX on their iPads or iPhones. Those two devices are highly integrated. But labeling the iPad as “Pro” without opening up its childproofed content controls is silly. (Especially if you’ve used a “professional” tool to do a job before.)

Better margins vs higher prices.

And can you tell me how much apple raised their prices and what that even means? The iphone 7 is selling for less than the iphone 5 in 2012. While the Xs max is out of sight. Of course that phone has lots of new technology in it.
[doublepost=1543322424][/doublepost]
Doesn't change the fact of the MSRP though.

New phones always have new technology in them. That's what makes them new.

Under-screen fingerprint readers are new technology and you can still get them on a phone about half the cost of the XR whose FaceID has been around for several generations.

Apple became the most valuable company under Tim Cook.
Nope.

"By the time PetroChina, China's largest oil company, listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the company surpassed ExxonMobil as not only the biggest oil company, but the most valuable corporation at the time."

Got to make your shares worth more, I get where you are coming from.

If I was betting on either company, I'd be leaning more toward Microsoft it has massive growth potential in services as they start to take off. Amazon still has a massive lead over Microsoft in this area so it gives Microsoft a lot of growth potential.

Apple on the other hand has stagnating sales and thus stopping reporting unit sales. It seems to only want to grow by increasing prices. Increasing prices will hit Apple hard should confidence in the market fall.
MSFT is already more than 3X as expensive of a stock as AAPL, so Mr. Market has already rewarded Microsoft. Now they have to keep up the growth, or the stock will tank because they don’t have the profit to back up the price. Let’s look closer at the numbers. All facts, not feeling or speculation.

Apple also has a $40B services business growing in double digits.

iPhone sales (revenue) grew 18% y/y.

Overall, Apple has about $150B more revenue than MSFT and almost 3X the profit while trading at 13X earnings versus 40 times for MSFT.

From 2017 to 2018, Apple grew overall revenue by 16%. Microsoft grew overall revenue by 22%. Microsoft had better growth, but is that worth 40X earnings? We will see.

Apple is also buying back $100B in stock (now roughly 12% of the company) in 1 year. Just the buyback will grow eps by over 10% with zero profit growth.

Given the facts and growth, AAPL is objectively the cheaper stock. We will find out if it’s too cheap and if MSFT is too expensive. Let’s give this a little longer than a 6 week timeframe to judge Apple.

Well this is what happens when you focus on profits over people and you lose focus. The product lineup is overly expensive and confusing. The Macbook weighs less than the MacBook Air? C'mon. You don't sell the Timecapsule anymore because you don't update it and then say that it's not updated enough?

I know this "since Jobs" stuff is a bit trite, but it's so so true. Jobs was a cutthroat capitalist. But he was also an marketing artist. He was not a profit-at-any-cost guy. He was not a focus-group-the-future guy. He was someone who understood that you don't kill Aperture, or the Time Capsule just because the "numbers aren't there." You don't let Siri fall behind so far, so fast. You don't make each and everything so damn thin at the expense of power, and battery life. He cared about the stock price…to a point. And after that point he had a middle finger waiting for them.

Jobs realized that a brand is a promise to consumers. And, like people, the best brands aren't monolithic and robotic. They have nuance. He had a lot of misses, sure, but he was also very brave. Apple just doesn't feel brave anymore. They feel like they're driven by numbers. And that's a very very dangerous place to be.

Prices are insane. I’m using all “budget” / base models of Apple devices not because I can’t afford the others but because I don’t think they are worth the price for what they deliver in comparison to previous generations of the same devices.

And even with that said, I am now not even tempted to buy base models anymore since they seem to be doing away with budget friendly entry models - no new iPhone SE, MacBook Air starting above $1,000, Mac Mini starting at $800, etc. HomePod is a joke for the price, and Apple Watch is not far behind. The only thing they have going right in that regard is the 2018 iPad, which is a great value.

Well deserved!! Tim Cook transformed Apple into a greedy fashionable brand, milking a loyal customer base for as much money as possible!!
Couldn't agree more. I really want to buy a new iphone but the price is just too high. I will feel stupid to pay that much money... Just sad

Doesn't matter, my point is that Apple is bigger under Cook than it was under Jobs, so your statement was false. Also, I think they make better products now then before. iPhone X, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, iMac Pro and AirPods are some of the best products Apple ever made. All under Cook.

I never understood all the Apple is doomed nonsense on this site. Apple is still in a great position moving forward. The smartphone market is saturated and iPhone's are being held onto longer, but once they are replaced - it'll likely be with another iPhone. Recent Mac's have been good options for professionals, the new iPad Pro is a beast of a machine, Apple Watch and Airpods are market leaders, HomePod and HomeKit are still the best implementation of a smart home in my eyes, Apple TV keeps getting more popular, services business is growing and will only continue to do so. They seem more balanced today than they did 5 years ago. Prices are high right now, but I never thought Apple products were cheap to begin with. When the biggest investors in the world keep buying Apple, you should take that into consideration.

I fear people and this world where people cant distingue between how awful is Windows and how much better (thought far from perfect) is MacOS.
Seriously, I’m sacary about this

But yes, Apple products are too toooooo way expensive, they are awesome and last longer than competors, but after 11 years using iOS, I’m thining is time to move to android as I change phone every 2-3 years because the camera, whi cares if the phone is going to last 4-5 years??(windos never, my computer is my work...)

Half the time, if I open a document from OneDrive, work on it, save it, and then open it on a different device later, none of the changes have saved. Super annoying. iCloud on the other hand has been seamless for me in every instance.
oh, hmm that is weird. Never experienced that. My only issue has been to use Office to sync Office files as I open them. This has caused saving office files to sometimes take a few minutes. There is a setting to disable it, so that fixes my issues.

I've been using one drive for many years never a hitch between windows, windows phones, and android phones. I've found Apple doesnt play nice with anyone else.
yeah, I hate that MAC OS does not allow me to redirect my folders to OneDrive. On Windows, I redirect my pictures, documents and desktop folder to my OneDrive. So I don't have to worry about saving directly to my OneDrive.

Time for a 5G-capable iPhone in 2019, Apple..

5G won't save this company. It will be years before 5G is realized in general. Cook is killing Apple with his focus on politics, inclusion and diversity - which is all marketing, don't think for a second they care about women or jobs, they are about the bottom line and nothing else matters. They've gotten away from making distinctive products, simply because they are out of ideas and they've lost their creativity (Jobs). Sorry Jony, you are not creative. At all. I don't think Apple fans will go to Android, I just think they aren't going to buy the newest generation every year... they're going to hold onto their stuff for 2-3 years. Why upgrade for minor spec bumps?

And PetroChina is no longer the most valuable company in the world. Things change.

Aevan's statement was true. Under Tim Cook, Apple became the most valuable company in the world. It still is as of this moment (825B vs. 817B).

It is amazing that a company that spends over a billion a month on R&D has so little to show for it. You would think that they would have some cool things simmering in the back room that they could finish and release. You would think that the software and things like Siri would be way better then they are. It’s been years and Siri still is pretty poor.

Just imagine Microsoft comes back with a surprise move by releasing Surface Mobile! Right now their potential is restrained a lot in the mobility space.

Microsoft just needs a phone and WOW they will really be on top!

Problem is, Microsoft has no follow through when it comes to these devices (windows phone, Zune). It doesn’t give you much confidence when buying one. I was seriously thinking about a Windows phone on the day - the continuum technology where you could dock your phone and use it like a computer had excellent value.

Good for Microsoft! Hopefully this teaches Apple a lesson...doubtful...knowing them, they will raise the prices next year! SIGH!

We need more competition than Apple vs Microsoft in the computer world. 2 companies control the tech world.
