Surf the web, typing up emails and documents in Word, playing some games, watching movies including YouTube, listening to music, taking notes while holding the device in one hand for a lot longer than any iPad or Surface, screen being more comfortable to view compared to an iPhone, more portable with longer batter usage life, etc.

No MagicKB case as it would defeat the purpose of a portable device, probably better to use a BT full sized or foldable KB.

Well one stops Workflows entirely and one is just a slow intel computer. Those in the know will buy what they need.

The iPad turns 11 and that update has not landed.
Apple did permit iPadOS to stagnate for some years due to lack to direction, this was mentioned by them. It’s drip feature release from here on end, hold on to your seat.

I couldn't agree more. We have a good mix of Apple and Windows devices in the house. My spouses' main computer is an older surface pro that she loves using. But it's Windows with all the good and bad that goes along with it. I bought a 7th gen ipad last year, and while certainly the use cases overlap, mostly in consumption the ipad wins for that hands down.

The surface wins in a lot of tasks, because well it's windows. I'm glad there are both in the world though.
For sure. They're two different platforms with two different sets of strengths and weaknesses. Windows and iPadOS are not in direct opposition with each other in the way that Windows and macOS are.

I don’t see any compelling evidence that a iPad mini exceed at most of these tasks. Any Windows or Mac device does these well these days.

In other words it’s still evolving slow as molasses which has been the core issue for more than a decade already.

You’re not wrong.

The point still stands. The iPad is as much a computer as the iPhone is. The PC/Mac is in a different category.
Yeah, except for multiple windows, bigger screen which changes everything, excellent keyboard/mouse use, etc. You know....like a computer.

There are Surface deals everywhere like at local Costco or look on slickdeals.net. For cost comparison, even through Microsoft a bundled Surface Pro 7 i7/16GB/256GB + keyboard + pen bundle is $1274.98 compared to iPad Pro 12.9 6GB/256GB for $1577.

For web browsing, i3/4GB/128GB is plenty.

Personally, I'd wait for AMD option or at least the Surface Pro 7+ since it has 10nm Intel 11th gen and not antiquated 14nm but no way I'm spending $1500+ on an iPad toy.
There are also MacBook Air deals everywhere too. And if all you're doing is web browsing, why are you spending $899? Buy an iPad base model, or a Chromebook.

With your full OS try and open two excel spreadsheets...
I'm sorry you don't understand the difference between what constitutes a computer, and what makes a computer more capable. Would I want to open two spreadsheets on a 10.2" screen? No. Do I use spreadsheets all the time on my iPad? Yes. It's a full OS. I guess when organizations decide what an OS is, they'll consult you for your arbitrary definition.

iPad is garbage since it doesn't have a full desktop browser. Chromebook has full desktop browser but have seen new Surface Pro 7 i5/8GB/128GB for $500 which is more versatile.

I don't have any troubles with the iPadOS's browser. Battery life on Surface Pro (the real battery life, not what MS claims) is complete garbage.

Safari is garbage on my MBA M1 and even worse on iPad since not all sites render properly, crashes or redirects to install app.

Then you have a defective laptop. Safari is fantastic on my Mini M1. Also, no issues with rendering, crashing, or otherwise on iPad.

Works fine with Chrome so not the laptop. You probably haven't come across sites that trigger Safari. A lot of them are mentioned in the M1 forum.

And it’s all just been done in such a hamfisted way because they’ve tried to add the bare essentials from a computer OS to a phone one.

What the heck is a computer even? Seems people just like to keep moving the goalposts to define a computer as something an iPad can't do. For whatever little good it does them.

Nah (matching your argument style).

Let’s take a look at Wikipedia then to start:

A computer is a machine that can be programmed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically.”

Common sense has spoken. Case closed.

Portion maybe on purpose and portion maybe due to a lack of direction at the time. I believe there is a component that Apple does not have control over and that is consumer acceptance. But it does seem that iPadOS is being innovated at a much slower pace than iOS, even widgets was a half baked implementation on iPadOS.

Well three main points, one hand portability, battery usage life and computing power without the need of a fan with noise.
