Hmm...unfunny as the ad is, Apple did bitter and vindictive first with the "Mac Vs PC" adverts

The Mac vs. PC Apple ads weren't always strictly accurate and in that sense were frustrating to PC users (I was one at the time). But they were never vindictive. In fact they made the PC guy a sympathetic character.

The Mac vs PC ads, like them or not, went on for years and we're highly successful. Microsoft pulled these after a few hours. That ought to tell you something.

Apple did NOTHING wrong with their ads. They were tasteful and humorous.

These are tasteless and too far. It can't insult the company. It can only be suggestive as to "you might not be the answer customers are looking for".

The moment it makes the other company looks stupid is the moment it's too much.

I don't see anything any more vindictive in these ads than the Mac vs. PC ads at all. The MS ads definitely seem like they were made by some interns not authorized by MS, definitely not by a marketing firm or something like that.

I'm guessing that Apple is letting Samsung have that segment. The 'Phablets'
I'm guessing the name alone scared Apple away.
And customers. I'm also scared away by that name and I wonder if its only the wording or the whole 2-in-1 concept altogether. Intel lately made a lot of fuss about new devices between laptops and tablets. The 'Laplets'?

Even without a weird name, those devices look weird. They are almost like some evil experiments in Frankensteins laboratory. We have these two categories of devices, who are well understood in their respective use cases. And now we rip them apart and take the pieces to create something in between them. Just to see if it lives.

I understand that pc-makers rather want to be in the growing tablet market. But is folding your laptop backwards like some origami figure really the solution for that problem?

Arguably everything Microsoft tried to achieve with Windows 8 was a failure. Yet somehow they managed to introduce touchscreens to every new laptop model. Intel even made it a requirement in its latest Ultrabook definition. And now? Do they really double as tablets in their functionality?

Half of the iPhones sold are the cheap or free models.

What is your opinion of the people who buy them?

There is not such thing like cheap or free iPhone. They all cost 500-700$,this s the price you pay for unlocked version or trough montly plan, but you always pay this price.

But the android is different. 50% or more of their users use 200-300$ phones.

So you don't consider portraying a dying of cancer, and now dead, CEO and founder of the other company in an advertisement vindictive? You must be in politics ;)

This was just 24 hours after their pathetic request of iPad owners to trade-in their iPads for a coupon to purchase a Surface RT. What company goes down that low to embarrass themselves? Again no compelling reason to purchase a MS product.
Maybe it's YOU that has nothing better to do on a Saturday but to put down others. ;)

I actually find your attack on MS's trade-in program to be pathetic. While I'm no blind supporter of Microsoft (nor an Apple fanboy despite having Apple devices for my phone and computers), I fail to see why you think MS is being pathetic. You do realize that car companies do this all of the time, right? In fact, I would venture to guess that you yourself may have done this in the past (ie, traded in a car of Brand X for credit towards a car of Brand Y). Would you consider Chrysler, Ford, Audi, or BMW to be "embarrassing themselves" for accepting trade-ins?

Feel free to criticize MS for their poor ads, but if you're going to call a trade-in program pathetic, at least use some common sense and realize that in the real world, this is an acceptable / viable strategy. Or at least explain why it's pathetic for MS but not pathetic for other companies.

I wouldn't say innovation isn't possible in the smartphone industry. Just that expecting innovation EVERY year in a maturing market is ludicrous.

And, yet many dumbos who have never invented anything ever are expecting it and complain if something doesn't match their exaggerated unrealistic wish list.

Plus, many don't even use (or rarely use) the "innovations" they are asking for.

hes not portrayed negatively. jobs is still the person most associated with apple.

he was dying of cancer when the whole fake steve jobs thing was around. he was dying of cancer when the onion made some jokes. he was dying of cancer when the simpsons ran their repeated unfunny jokes.

And that makes it right? It's tasteless end of story. Microsoft acknowledged this by pulling the ads. Comparing Mac vs PC commercials as an argument to justify these tasteless ads is moronic. Furthermore, Microsoft pulled the ads which means they recognized the err in their ways, sadly, some folks on here don't get it.

Close to a 1000 comments, had to chime in. :)

Yes this is an epic post. If there was someway of combining this one with the blu ray is a bag of hurt thread it would be legendary.

On topic though it is never good to insult potential customers. The mac vs pc ads didn't go after the customers of Microsoft just the PC itself by making it personified.

Um, they've earned the right to be smug. They are arrogant, and they know what you want before you do.

Uh huh. So you want the government to tell you how to live your life?

You want Monsanto to tell you what they know best the kind of GMO foods you eat without a choice? Google it.

You want the fashion stores to tell you what THEY THINK you should dress like?

Ever hear of "pride before the fall"? It's happening to Apple. You just don't know it. It would not surprise me if Tim Cook gets fired or steps down. If Microsoft is making moves to get a new CEO replacement, I think the BoD of Apple are going to think long and hard about the ramifications of Tim Cook staying longer on his job.

Also, Phil Schiller needs to go. There's something not right with this guy.

And if you think Apple knows what we want before we know it, then explain the gay-ness that is the iphone 5C. Explain the changes in iOS 7.

Remember, Apple is NOT a fashion company. And they DON'T KNOW exactly what we all want. They create products that 'blanket' all kinds of demographics they think fits.

In other words, a 'one size fits all' mentality which is NOT always a good philosophy. If so, explain, for example, their reasoning for the tiny virtual keyboard when on other smartphones with larger screens, they type more comfortably due to the spaced out keys?

Apple will never add sd slots to their devices.

Why allow people to buy a 16GB SD card for £10 when they can sell a 32GB model for £80 more than the 16GB version.

Apple should really supply lube with the higher capacity iPhones and iPads

Do the Nexus phone and tablets have SD cards? How about HTC One?

I lol at the video
Even though some of jokes were true I'm pretty sure these new phones are gonna fly off the shelf

Sociopath

I am not addressing the people who saw these and found them amusing, I am addressing the creators of these pieces of shame: How in the living hell can you mock some one, loved or hated, in the death grip of cancer, and think it would be "funny"? You, whom ever you all are, you need help or medication.

There is funny, there is satire and there is beyond the pale, this was beyond the boundaries of human sympathy.

Goodbye Microsoft

What would you expect from a company that has been led by a person like Ballmer. I'll be in the market for a gaming system and a new TV come Black Friday. I was hopping I could add Apple to the manufactures in consideration. instead I have to delete one more. Goodbye Xbox, it will be PS4 and I guess it will be Sony for the 60" Flat screen TV.

Microsoft saying "our friends from Cupertino" reminds me of politicians saying "my good friend on the other side of the isle". In other words, two first class bs-ers!

Well one of Microsoft's executives (the one behind the Scroogled campaign) is Mark Penn. His previous line of work was a democrat pollster. I wouldn't be surprised if he's behind this and all those anti-iPad ads.

So let me get this straight...you have no problem with a company poking fun at their competitors DEAD CEO. Gotcha, hope that insensitivity gets you far in life.

The media you mentioned was not in direct competition with Apple -- oh and he wasn't dead. We've all seen people recover and live long lives after being diagnosed with cancer and I believe (with his warchest of money) we all believed he would survive with the best care a human could have. To have someone represent Jobs, post death, especially in a "humorous attempt" is plain wrong, distasteful and whoever was associated with it should be fired.

What the hello was that? You just destroyed your argument!
