Completely ignoring the fact that Bill Gates had no relationship to XEROX PARC and Jobs did. Steve Jobs asked permission and was given permission. Gates did not.

A complete lie. Xerox tried to sue Apple. They lost. When Apple tried to sue MS, they lost on the same exact grounds, via the same exact judge.

can you link me to a current virus that I can take a look at? I'd like to look it up.

tip: If I have to authenticate the payload prior to it being dropped on my machine, it's not really a virus. Kinda like how you can't tell a judge someone broke into your house if you let them in.

btw i'm serious. link me to an actual virus and I guarantee you will be propelled into stardom by the media.

Funny, a few months ago I was looking for a virus for my Windows XP virtual machine, since it can be shut down without saving any changes, as if it never happened, and I simply could not find one. Apparently viruses are things that you can simply Google.

I can get a virus on OS X 10.6.4?

funny, I haven't seen this on headlined on MR.

Obvious troll is obvious.

The point is that Macs are not immune to viruses. As more users begin to use the Macintosh operating systems I can guarantee you that viruses for this operating system will become more prevalent.

no way. NO WAY.

First you spout off nonsense, then you call me a troll, so I ask you to provide ONE virus sample that I, and really the world, can examine, and you give me this crap?

ugh. I expected proof. You sounded pretty adimate about it (well, you people typically do).

dang. I was really, really hoping to have some proof this time

Ok, need help.
My neighbor bought a "premium" laptop (asus) from bestbuy. This laptop was approx $1,400 OTD.
We can't find the standard BluRay Burner that all PC's come with.
No USB 3 ports (this is a brand new PC).
No VGA port to connect his 2001 Dell projector so we need to go buy an adapter I guess.
One of the selling points was "Good battery life Of up to 2 hours and 27 minutes"
He can't create Microsoft Office files to share with the guys at work because Microsoft Office apparently doesn't come with the PC.
It did come with Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.1 preinstalled... so score.

It does have an I7 and is black.

Take it back and get a macbook and spend the extra $400 on something else.:):)

Actually yes they did sue, but Xerox gave them the concept from the Alto computer, because the Xerox board couldn't understand something as simple as a mouse. So they gave it to Apple in exchange for Apple shares. I bet they where kicking themselves :D

so I bet they only sued when the realised how popular the Mac had become

I've commented about this elsewhere, but Microsoft's campaign here is ineffective. They give poor reasons for staying with Windows, apart from the Blu-Ray support. This isn't the first time Microsoft had a ridiculous Mac vs PC page, either; I recall something from 2004 or 2005 that had a page featuring a professional writer (represented with a stock photo) who was paid to write about how she'd switched back to Windows from Mac OS X.

Microsoft sells software, not hardware, yes, but they're protecting their interests by advertising computers from PC OEMs. (Although the Windows versions that come with these PCs are almost always crippled versions of Windows; I was looking at PC specs online, and the majority of OEM PCs, even high-end ones, come with Win7 Home Premium—or if you're lucky, Win7 Pro—installed.) You'd be giving MS more money if you bought Win7 Ultimate by itself and installed it on your Mac. Microsoft knows that they'll get money from a Windows licence if you buy a stock PC with it loaded, even if you wipe Windows off and replace it with Linux, or hackintosh the machine. If you buy a Mac, you may or may not buy Windows, which makes it a less certain deal for MS.

For the record, my Mac running Firefox also has the same page glitch.

Adimate is not a word to begin with.

And just because I am not familiar with viruses doesn't change the fact that people who claim they are not susceptible to viruses are completely wrong.

Fail troll is fail. If you are really a mac-user who doesn't understand that your device has nothing to offer you if using it for typing papers, then you're beyond computer-illiterate. I would say it's "borderline retarded" (your own words, sorry about that) but I used to be a mac-user-basher too so I'll cut you some slack since your experience with macs obviously predates OS X.

My experience predates OS X? I am using a Macbook Air to type this message....one that I bought in December of '09.

YOUR Completely wrong :p

to this day there has NEVER been a virus on Mac OS X. There has been trojans, but not viruses. Viruses & Trojans are different. Yes there are issues out there, but not to the extreme of Windows

Most threats get solved quickly & easily. I've been using Macs for 13 years and never had an issue. I've also used PC's I got a PC in 2004 brand new and within the first week it had a virus even with Norton on. I scrapped all my PC's back in Jan 2008 & have been PC free since then in my household, which makes things a lot easier :D

I laughed at this stupid website for 10 minutes earlier today. At least Microsoft accomplished one thing.

Another lame advertisement. I can't find any great difference between a PC and Mac except 99% of the time the Mac looks better. <Rant>BTW want to say the Mac laptops in college... Fad... They look better and seem to represent a higher class or indie than a PC. Most I know with them spend their time frustrated with the speeds when my yes uglier but cheaper and faster computer is already done compiling</Rant> Also to the no virus comments... They might not be as common but they are coming the same as they are on the PC's. If it was not so late I would post some links but I wish Mac users would not think their comps are immune to a virus... Just seems to be asking for trouble.

Emballmer is bringing down the Microsoft curve.
He's effectively done so for the past decade.

Even more so, considering that MS's Macintosh Business Unit is one of their most profitable divisions.

Counterproductive²

can you link me to a current virus that I can take a look at? I'd like to look it up.
I actually had a virus on my Mac - it was referred to as VISTA. As soon as I erased the partition, all was restored.

Isn't it great that Windows 7 is also very touch screen friendly?
W7 is also a clunker when it comes to touch-screen functionality - not surprising, as it's a desktop OS with touch capability bolted on.

We windows users are too busy using our PC's to constantly insult the other.

If you say so.

And best of all, even though there are vastly more windows fans than mac fans...
Funny how droves of them make new purchases from Apple's Stores each day.

Last, but not least.... I win.
Last, and certainly, least.

oh these ridiculous adverts work on the very uneducated computer consumers.

Picture a nephew is heading to college in the fall so we're dropping the grand for a new 13 MBP ($100 off, and sell the ipod touch:p)...so his mom, my sister-in-law, calls and says "don't spend that much money on a laptop, they've been showing all over the news that the antenna doesn't even work on an apple."

Here's my humble attempt to fulfill your unanswered question Doc! Been using OS X for 5 years now but have been using Windows at work for over 7 (though all have been running XP besides that first year when we had Windows 2000 to deal with *shudders*. At least we got to upgrade from Office 2003 to 2007, which I have never looked back to.)

1)
Windows: Alt+Prt Scn for a selected window or Ctrl+Prt Scr for the entire desktop. This just places it on the clipboard; then you need to open an image editor like MS Paint to paste the image, THEN save it. (Funny thing is I learned this in college rather than work)

OS X: Cmd+Shft+3 for the entire desktop or Cmd+Shft+4 for a USER DEFINABLE area (cross hairs, complete with a pixel measurement, show up letting you drag out a specific area. Note both of these will create and save the image to your desktop with no user intervention. Adding Ctrl to either command will save it to the clipboard a la Windows and can paste wherever you like afterwards.

2)
Windows: Can be done with use of a separate 3rd party program such as Adobe PDF distiller that shows up like a separate printer. Follow a few prompts and hope you got your margins right when you pull up the output file.

OS X: Select the PDF drop down menu in the print dialog and can directly save it from there with a few other options. Comes with an included mini WYSIWYG preview before you even select that.

3)
Windows AND OS X: Using the modifiers (Ctrl, Alt [Cmd], Shift or a combination of them) will let you either move, copy or create a shortcut (alias) of what you are dragging. Too late (read: lazy) to google exactly which combo does what.

Just some quick and not in any way definitive conclusions.

1 - Much simpler, however with more selective control, on OS X; all done at the OS level, no need for a separate built in program.

2 - A few less clicks on OS X, but again, no need for a 3rd party app just to do it

3 - More or less the same on either platform, but with OS X's spring loaded folders, seeing the destination of your drag and drops are a no brainer.

Anyone feel free to add or detract or even ask more questions!

In general, trying to argue that any software on Macs is better than on PC is a losing proposition. PCs just offer so much more software. Here are a few points:

1 - Take a look at Snipping Tool (Windows 7) This one comes with Windows 7. Allows to capture any shapes (including free hand). In addition, there are dozens of tools for Windows that can do it. Many are free.

This is too trivial. The more interesting question would be - on OS X, can you prevent any/all tools from making a snapshot of a screen? You can do it on Windows and corporations use it in secure sensitive environments. They want to make sure that when you are viewing secret document, you can not make a copy.

2 - Again tons of options. Here is a video guide for PrimoPDF. Use it to save any document, web page or entire web site to PDF file. Or use Firefox if you prefer.

3 - not much to discuss. Easier on Windows because it's easier to re-arrange windows on the desktop in Windows 7 in general.

LOL i find the opposite with my MacBook Pro :D I am the only one who has a Mac laptop in my Media class when I'm doing compiling everyone has Acer's & Sony's and because my MBP has 8 gigs of ram gets the exporting done in about pretty much instantly, as compared to the PC's. It took about 20 min on my computer to export a 18 min HDV file into a quicktime .mov file. On one of my classmates sony laptop it took over an hour for the same file in Premier CS4 :p

I think it was actually effective, but not in the eyes of people who love Mac. Effective, because judging by some of the comments here, it kind of pinned point some of the troubles that Windows users face when going to the Mac. And I saw a lot of new to Mac users on this thread better articulating those frustrations. As a result they will better express themselves in the future to other Windows users looking to get a Mac. Similar to the Mac vs PC commercial that Apple used to make, where most Mac users would repeat the same claims over and over again here on this forum. Only that those Mac commercials had a lot of FUD, and it's actually the main thing that turned me off to Apple. Not because I care about Microsoft, but because of how they try to manipulate people into buying Macs, by comparing pre Windows 95 problems with snow Leopard.

ahh sorry for the typo. i typically don't care for spelling and punctuation after 10:00 PM PST.

but thanks for proving my point. Like I Said, when you want to show me one thats running rampant through the wild right here, right now, you will probably be on Good Morning America or some other show with the headline "Man discovers debilitating os x eating virus!". I've been searching for such a beast myself but typically come up fruitless.

After being exposed to the community of Apple fags that do nothing but proclaim their blind love for the overpriced status symbols, my next purchase will not be an Apple product unless I am purchasing a new iPod.

lol. you win. excuse me whilst I restart into winblows on my overpriced status symbol.

I find the font rendering is a little easier on my eyes.

That's odd....I used multiple Windows desktops for years when I was in grade school up until I switched over to Macintosh for college. I never had a problem...because I was taught how to use a computer by someone who is competent.

After being exposed to the community of Apple fags that do nothing but proclaim their blind love for the overpriced status symbols, my next purchase will not be an Apple product unless I am purchasing a new iPod.

Well thats up to you i couldn't care less what you buy, the fact is that my old PC got a virus & my Macs never have.

Although something else you say is wrong :p The PC getting the virus wasn't through me, it was a family system so my younger sister was also using it too etc.

I love Mac errors like "The file cannot be copied because the file cannot be copied", or how about "The file cannot be modified because the file cannot be modified."

Windows 7 just makes sense. Its faster (even on macs compared to osx), its sleeker, its less obtrusive, its intuitive and its more compatible. Its also a helluva lot more powerful. I can do so much more with my OS than Mac fanboys can. Hell, its even easier for me to just maximize a windows to view it at fullscreen. I love the way explorer works compared to macs convuluted version. I like that I can even move my taskbar to be where ever the heck I want. I love being able to drag files to a CD/DVD and simply clicking "burn to disc".

I also love being able to use whatever hardware I want and not having to worry about my OS supporting it. Thats so important to someone who wants speed out of their PC without waiting 6 months to a year for a full system replacement to come on the market. I also think its great how an open ended hardware system creates competition in the market instead of leaving it potentially stale if OSX took over.

Isn't it great that Windows 7 is also very touch screen friendly? Man, who woulda thunk that Windows 7 would be more compatible than a mac for touch screen when Apple created such great devices as the iPad and iPhone.

Also, I love that it doesn't come with iTunes! iTunes blows. I know its a minor annoyance, but its great that not everything on Windows has an "i" in front of it.

If you were to create 2 countries, one for mac, and one for pc, you'd find that even though the pc country outnumbers mac by more than 10 to 1, they would be quiet. We windows users are too busy using our PC's to constantly insult the other. You guys spend most of your time in forums thinking of ways to defend your stupid waste of money so you don't have to feel so bad. Its ok, you made a mistake, your next PC can have windows on it.

And best of all, even though there are vastly more windows fans than mac fans... there are less windows fanboys to deal with than mac ones.

Last, but not least.... I win.

Can you say...TROLL?

:D thats because no viruses for Mac exist :D only a few trojans
