Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt these tablets have the necessary hardware to make drawing with a stylus work better than a wacom tablet.
MS and HP have been using the Wacom digitizer since the HP tablet was introduced earlier this year.
If you watched the entire keynote, it was stated several times that they all have both a touch and a pen digitizer built in.

How is it that my parents think that they'll be able to use this within 10 mins of getting a Windows 8 powered slate, when they still can't use OS X?

Windows 8, Metro, just works for them. The icons are somewhat big and clearer. The colours make them want to explore what's there.

Thanks for the info (and that was an actual question I was posing, I was not sure how good these tablets are as far as drawing). It is an actual downside to the iPad that I hope is corrected someday (I don't want to have to use a stylus but it really is better for drawing that using your finger).

And AAPLaday, can you give some examples or are you just going to repeat yourself in some sort of weird self-referential logic?

iPads support keyboards, even though only very few people use them.

The problem is not the keyboard, it's the mouse.
If you've ever developed applications for iOS/Android and desktops you'll know what I mean. They have nothing in common except their most basic views. It simply doesn't make sense to mix the two paradigms on one OS, since you'll need two distinct sets of applications. Just like it doesn't make sense to install the current Windows on an iPad, you wouldn't want to connect a mouse to any tablet.

Also the form factor. Tablets have to be small and light, whereas you'd want a big screen for your desktop applications, and probably more storage space and a faster CPU.

Because it requires the development of 2 entirely different applications, which is (of course) a lot of work. You can't just make a few tweaks and make an application like Photoshop touch-based. You'd basically have to start from the scratch.
Those 2 versions of an application would probably be never run together on one machine. If you have a touch-based computer, you'll use touch applications. If you have a mouse-based computer, you'll use the existing interface.

iOS and OS X share a lot of code. iOS Mail and OS X Mail share, in all probability, a lot of code. MBA is small and light, and yet it is a fully functional laptop. Developing two distinct GUIs is exactly what Apple does. We agree that it is a lot of work. It is also very difficult to do successfully but it can obviously be done, unless you think iOS/OS X is a failure.

There is no inherent reason that desktop apps should require more power than touch-based apps. There is no inherent reason that OS X cannot run on an iPad. The only reason is that Apple don't allow it.

I'm not saying this is a slam dunk but the approach has merit. It is certainly a very challenging approach and it remains to be seen if MS can pull it off but I for one won't blame them for being ambitious.

At work I attach a 24" screen, a power source, a keyboard, and a mouse to my macbook and use it as a desktop computer. As a standalone laptop I could probably do 80% of what I do with an iPad. Add the necessary software and a thunderbolt port to an iPad and I would have the perfect device.

Because by a year from now they'll have sat down and learned how to use a desktop OS. They're just including that plan in their decision.

Edit: macsmurf, you seem to be making the assumption that Microsoft will not force tablet users into the Aero UI for most tasks and that just does not seem to be the case. Metro is replacing the Start menu and that is about it.

They've had a year with OS X.

They still prefer Windows, it's more colourful for them, it's more alive.

Have you not been told never to start a sentence with "Because" ?

Nice to see the deluded Microsoft paid shills already taking to the airwaves declaring the end of the iPad. Thurrott and BGR.com at the forefront.

I kinda feel relieved for Thurrott at least for the moment. Have you seen him on his show with Leo? That poor bastard looked like he had been on a suicide watch for a while because Apple has been reaming MS constantly the last few years.

Unfortunately when Win8 tablets flop I fear he might actually end it. But atleast in the fantasy land in his head he got to ride on the big candy-cane slide with his hero Ballmer one last time.

Yeah - clearly anyone that says something positive about MS is a paid shill and DELUDED at that! Thanks for pointing that out, Oliver Stone.

The start menu is pretty simple and it basically sucks as it is now so it is possible that it can be unified as long as the user interaction is not too fancy.

However I do agree that it might not be the best approach. The real issue is the apps, though. If it turns out that MS does nothing but replace the start menu then it will obviously be a spectacular failure.

Oh yeah, I agree that the Start menu needs to be fixed at the very least. I don't see Microsoft doing anything other than that, though. Metro is going to be a gimmick that fixes a small part of Windows. It can be so much more than that.

And before I forget, ct, then you are a sad person. I was hoping you wouldn't start trolling so blatantly but I guess I'm kind of silly like that. Feel free to attack me personally, it really is more amusing than hurtful.

Metro is as much a "gimmick" as Apple's 3D icons. You're trolling.

I am not trolling, they genuinely cannot use OS X.

Also, I wasn't attacking you, standard grammar is such that you do not usually begin a sentence with "because", regardless whether a pertinent clause or phrase has been provided.

I do hope this is cleared up.

LOL Don't be. MS has provided plenty of fodder to use against them. For years now. A lot of it happens when Ballmer opens his mouth.

Why so threatened? And don't say you aren't - because anyone that attacks Ballmer, MS and the like so much has at least a FEW issues. If you weren't threatened - your posts wouldn't be so nasty towards the company. You have this "if you're not apple, you're crap" mentality and quite frankly it's both hilarious and sad at the same time.

Relax - Apple ins't going anywhere. You don't have to try and knock the competition to make yourself feel better. No one is coming over to steal your Apple products and replace them with other manufacturers.

I think Microsoft has the right idea. Samsung Series 7 tablet (runs Windows 7) + Windows 8 = WIN, just like Apple with the iPad. They are just perfecting the idea and taking it one step further, remember that is all the Apple did with the iPad.
