I think Mac ads do need to target on "user experience".

Instead of comparing itself to Windows OS, it needs to concentrate on it's own innate strengths.

Honestly, Apple will never win against Microsoft on cost. No objective way.

Apple needs to focus showing off it's selling point, the package. It needs show the superiority in philosophy of having an OS developed for select hardware.

It's an advantage and disadvantage. Microsoft has to make software that is compatible with thousands of vendors.

Apple has to make software that is compatible with one vendor.

So yes, of course the price will be lower. The supply of PC's is astronomical in comparison to Macintosh.

I don't think Mac prices are unjustified. However, they are opened to attacks on OBJECTIVE facts. Most people don't buy a mac for it's power/os. They buy it for looks.

Which is ok, just admit it.

I have to disagree. Many people do buy them for their looks. I know a few that did/plan on doing.
But they're a minority.
People that buy a Mac almost always have a specific reason to buy it. Mine was video editing, for example.
I'm not willing to have an inferior experience with unreliable software just to save a couple hundred bucks.
I have been a Windows user for 15 years and a Mac user for 2. The only reason I turn my Windows XP desktop on is gaming. That, in my opinion, is the only major flaw of the Mac. Lack of games. And that is where MS should strike if they want to hurt Apple and its fanboys.
The price is irrelevant to most Mac users. We know that we're paying a premium price for a premium experience and premium reliability. And we don't mind.

I hope he's happy with his plasticky craptacular Vista Laptop.

To me it's not just style of Mac's its also Mac OS X and how it uses the power of the processor and memory.

Vista fills memory with rubbish it thinks you may use to pretend it can load applications quickly.

Mac OS uses the memory it needs and loads the applications you want when you want, nice and quick.

Another shallow and misinformed Ad by some silly advertising company for a jealous Microsoft.

Suddenly 'I'm a PC' has become cool, modern, worldwide, friendly etc... - the words are no longer seen as negative.

Not to mention the fact that Apple will be promoting Microsoft's "I'm a PC" slogan in every future ad they make.

Clever MS.

"I'm a PC" has become cool, what world do you live in.

Sadly, these commercials will work for the same reasons that mac ads have - they pander to the uninformed (or those that are informed from second-hand knowledge). The kinds of people that believe everything they hear. ie "macs don't run any programs" "pcs crash a lot" "macs are overpriced" "pcs are confusing" etc etc

Just incase it comes up, I own a macbook pro, used to an ibook g4 AND g3, have appletv, an iphone, etc etc so i am an apple guy and would only buy their products. I just think these ads will be/are effective.

Well... I had a Macbook x2, iMac x2, Mac Pro and now a MBP... They all died apart from my current MBP which already has burning pixels appearing on the screen. My primary tool is a PC and it's way more powerful in terms of computing power and accessibility to tools that I need and no matter what people will say, to me a PC is a way better system. Microsoft made it look bad but lately with Vista 64bit and all the service packs that thing is running as smooth as it can be.
Some companies work only on Macs and I need full compatibility (hence the MBP) but I wouldn't mind switching it for a quad core Alienware as I surely would do a lot more and a lot faster with it.

Please stop.

Do I need to look up the definition for software for you?

"something used or associated with and usu. contrasted with hardware: as a: the entire set of programs, procedures, and related documentation associated with a system and especially a computer system ; specifically : computer programs b: materials for use with audiovisual equipment"

really now?

Great ad.

Apple fanboys up in arms because Microsoft have DARED to do exactly what Apple have been doing for years and years. Only Microsoft are actually basing their ads on real-world, consumer facts and don't sugar coat it with pretentious nonsense like the I'm a mac, I'm a pc ad.

Also amazing how Microsoft have in one campaign completely ruined Apple's "I'm a mac, I'm a PC" slogan.

The apple fanboys bitching and moaning is fun to watch though

I agree. That's why Macrumors is the best comedy show out there :)

Computer software, or just software is a general term used to describe a collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some tasks on a computer system.

Its still software.

Thats why people pay extra money for Apple. To get the software.

Apple is selling you hardware.

Get it through your thick skull.

You are buying a LAPTOP, that is not SOFTWARE. That is physical HARDWARE.

If Apple put that OS on that ugly HP, do you think Apple would still be in business?

No it's their HARDWARE that draws the ATTENTION.

Why would the guy want to see the Macs if he already knew he didn't want one. This commercial makes no sense. Just because one person thinks that Macs are all about aesthetics doesn't mean they are. I'm disappointed at Microsoft... Why do they insist on false advertising to promote their product?

Last time I checked Apple does a hell of a lot to beat down the Microsoft brand in their commercials. I'd like to know since when does a PC crash and get infected constantly? Mine is perfectly fine. If you have any ounce of brain power, you can run a PC without running into trouble. Mac fanboys get your head out of your asses.

You can get the same hardware in a Dell, HP, etc. for much cheaper.

Am I wrong? Is an operating system hardware now?

(Its funny that you have to insult me in every one of your posts.)

Great purchase 'Giampaolo'! You'll hope you had paid for that less powerful Mac when your PC starts doing what it does best...crashing and getting infected. Oh, I forgot you're not really gonna use that computer.

I run my PC all the time and doesn't give me any trouble. In fact is more stable and durable than any other Mac I have ever owned.
Caught in MacFanboy propaganda?

I think the advertisers must have read a lot of the online comments about Lauren NOT going into the Apple store to look at a 13" MacBook even though she claimed that Apple only had one laptop to choose from ( you can tell from the analysing of the ad that she never actually goes into the Apple store. This time the actor actually goes in a touches a MacBook but then reverts to the usual FUD of style over substance (even though MS don't do hardware) and goes on to buying the HP laptop. Its also interesting that the whole advert ONLY ever talks about buying a laptop and mentions a couple of basic hardware requirements ( things which are nothing to do with MS). Its almost like MS is too embarrased to sell any of the supposedly great features of Vista...? Something Apple is only too happy to do with OS X.

Interesting.

Again no basis.

Mac OS X didn't natively develop this "advanced power of the processor and memory", this was built in to the Linux kernels.

Vista fills memory with rubbish.. hmm that's very technical. I don't know how Vista would fill it with "rubbish". I hope you don't talk to your coworkers like this, which is why most of them would palm face and walk away from you.

A few points:

1) That guy looks like he's in Uni, so he gets an Apple discount of 15%
2) Portability, he got a 16"
3) The nVidia 9600 in the HP becomes irrelevant because of the crap resolution of the screen and because he wants "Potability"
4) Aluminium is more stable
5) Apple are more reliable and make quality products

If I was him, I'd go with a 13" MacBook with 4GB RAM and then upgrade the HDD to 500GB.

Which is funny because Apple doesn't offer anything over 320GB on the MacBook, but then everyone on here just assumes that everyone in the world can just upgrade hard drives & rams while blind folded.

RAM is normally a pretty easy upgrade on laptops if they are designed where the RAM slots are just under one cover, but a hard drive can be a pain in the a** as you then need to do the reinstall of everything.

A few points:

1) ..
2) Portability, he got a 16"

More to the point, its a whopping 1.7" thick and weighs in at 7.1lbs (before battery charger)...

...and the first review at HP says that its battery life sucks and that buyers should upgrade to the 12 cell battery...gosh wonder how much more weight that will add?

FWIW, I noticed the weight increase in going from the Thinkpad T41p to the T61...2lbs more doesn't seem like a lot until you actually start carrying it around all the time.

And its also a 15" widescreen, which makes it "more than a legal pad" long, which makes it a nuisance to carry in my bag, as its width causes it to hang up when pulling it out to go through airport security. My next laptop is going to once again be no more than roughly 13" wide, and once again, back down to 5lbs or less.

-hh

EDIT: looks like there's been some confusion over which HP model. Nevertheless, choosing the "Bigger, Heavier, etc" does not make for success in a requirement for portability.

Good, so you admit that
1) Hardware is cheaper elsewhere.

and

2) People buy it only for OS/Looks.

That's all I wanted you to admit.

which is what the AD was trying to say.

Gosh. lol

No Laptop with Windows, even free

I've read page after page of these comments (no, didn't read ALL 14 pages) and not once do I see anyone stating the #1 reason for paying a little more for a Mac.

OS-X.

Even if the only laptop I could buy had a miserable 1200x800 screen, 80GB drive, integrated graphics, 1 USB port, no external graphics port, and looked ugly, I'd still prefer it over anything that had Windows (any flavor) on it.

What a failure.

Microsoft is also software. Just software that is not as good as Apples.

The ad fails because it doesnt even talk about software, and it is put out by a software company.
