I am a lawyer for a V10 firm. That's beside the point.

Majority of the fanboys were attacking the AD as baseless. The ad is perfectly warranted. By your own admission you admit that Apple can not compete with the prices set forth by OEM PC manufactures. Thus, the only reason you buy a Macintosh is for looks/OS.

The ad was just showing that realization, you can buy a cheaper PC than has better hardware than a MAC.

You know, it's hardware that makes compiling times faster, dvd ripping quicker, hd playback smoother.

You do realize that you're making yourself sound less and less intelligent with each post, right? I seriously and sincerely hope your debating skills in the courtroom are more refined than they are on a tech forum.

By my own admission? Come on now... you can do better than that.

I agree 100%.

In these ads, the people always go to look at a Mac before they settle with a HP.

I think thats the weakest part of the entire ad campaign. Both Lauren and this guy both wanted a Mac but couldn't afford one with the features they wanted so they settled on the HP.

It really does send the message that Macs are what people want and you only buy HP if you are poor. (I accept that this isn't necessarily the truth but it is a subtile message in the ads).

Yes yes yes yes yes!!!

Its like buying a house without even looking to see what the inside is like!

Lol, you guys must be trolls.

That analogy is so off base, it's not even worthy of a retort.

Good luck guys, I am done. I am a macintosh user. Obviously, I am too busy but hopefully you will begin to realize that your enjoyment of a mac has nothing to do with what Apple / Microsoft / any other vendor has to say.

Its MS showing their 'Real Life Situations'.

Good, so you admit that
1) Hardware is cheaper elsewhere.

and

2) People buy it only for OS/Looks.

That's all I wanted you to admit.

which is what the AD was trying to say.

Gosh. lol

Most people buy Macs for OS X and Mac-only software. Only uneducated fools buy hardware based on its looks. Unfortunately there are people like that all around the world.
Like the people I know who buy netbooks because they're tiny and "cute" but then get all pissed 'cause they can't run a game that was launched in 2002.
There will always be stupid people in the world.

It's really ****** simple:
People that want something specific out of there computers know that they'll have to pay for it. For example, if they want a gaming rig, they'll pay for the best GPU, CPU, loads of RAM, fast HDDs, etc.
People that just want a laptop/desktop to do some word processing, IMing or browsing will try and find the cheapest computer that fits their needs.
This "user" and the one in the other ad just want a computer to do some basic stuff. They don't need anything specific from it so any hardare will do.
People like them should always go for PCs. People who want more out of their computers in terms of performance and reliability normally choose to go for the Mac.
Don't expect Apple to release a Mac for people like that because they're just not the kind of users Apple caters to.
Elitist? Niche? May be. But so what?
They deliver.

You dont have a retort because you ran out of insults to throw at us.

Try google next time.

It definitely has nothing to do with what you say, that's for sure.

Good riddance.

OS X is NeXTStep and BSD. BSD is Linux.

Now I hope you're being sarcastic with this, but *sigh*, here goes :

BSD predates Linux by about 14 years. BSD's first version of Unix shipped in 1977, Linux was only in Linus' mind in April of 1991 and was finally posted to USENET as version 0.01 in September 1991.

But that's besides the point, NeXTSTEP didn't use BSD code either for the kernel. The Mach kernel was released around 1984 or 1985 and was a Carnegie Mellon University project (BSD stands for Berkeley Software Distribution and thus is made at the University of California, Berkeley).

NeXTSTEP released their first version in 1989, 3 years after they first demoed their OS. This is a full 2 years ahead of Linux for the release, a 5 years ahead of Linux if you count the demos as working code.

Hence, no... OS X doesn't use Linux code in their kernel. Darwin doesn't even have a GPL compatible license (even though the APSL is FSF approved, it is not GPL compatible) and so couldn't even begin to use any Linux code without a change of license for the entire code base.

So what do you have to say about that EnderTw, still want to quote this for posterity ?

Shut down. lol

What's funny is...

...Microsoft is using almost all the same excuses that all their Zealots use. They cry so loudly about the fact that PCs are so much cheaper than Macs while in almost every case totally ignoring the OS installed. Then, when they do talk about OS, they scoff loudly about how insecure Apple computers are (always the first to be 'hacked' at the Pwn to Own competitions) while crowing about all the security in Windows, despite the massive real, attacks and exploites in the wild attacking Windows.

No, these commercials will work on the people who are used to hearing these comments and already half believe them. The people who actually think about their purchase are beginning to realize that a computer is more than just hardware.

Oh, and for the commenter who argued that Apple uses the "exact same components" as their competition, you're wrong. While they use the same types from many of the same manufacturers, their specifications for those components are significantly tighter. I've worked for one of Apple's suppliers, and I've seen entire shipments returned because a small percentage fell outside of their very narrow tolerances; components that were immediately accepted by competing computer manufacturers.

These adverts are a smart move by Microsoft, but they've executed them extremely poorly. Why?

  • The advert is about the PC ... but doesn't tell the audience why they should buy a PC other than it's cheaper than a Mac.
  • The advert is by Microsoft, who do not make PC's but do make the Operating System. The advert doesn't actually advertise a single Microsoft product or tell the audience why they should consider Windows for their needs.
  • The only reference to a Mac seems to be to discredit the "brand" of Apple as being too expensive. Yes, Macs are expensive, but that's not a reason not to own one. Computers are ultimately judged on performance are they not?
  • Macs have one advantage over PC's when it comes to long term performance. From experience, a Windows PC loses it speed and software reliability the older it gets, unless a system restore is actioned. A Mac, from experience, can run "as new" on the same installion of OS X it shipped with, for years.
  • The use of HP laptops makes the adverts somewhat unbelievable to the audience who, if they are paying attention to the series, will realise that there must be some kind of Microsoft/HP tie in going on. This alone creates an impression of the advert being staged, which of course it is, but with that the authenticity of the "You Find It, You Keep It" slogan dies.

Apple got a nice little boost on the UK's Gadget Show this morning when the iMac trounced the HP Touchsmart all-in-one (I think that's it's name) and the Sony Vaio all-in-one. The test covered looks, built quality, and performance on basic specifications with no upgrades. The iMac outperformed the HP which ships with twice the RAM (4GB compared to 2GB) while running a host of intense applications and transferring a 2GB file from Memory Stick to the Hard Drive.

It seems Microsoft also has a little too much belief in the MegaHertz Myth going by the "Tech Savvy" bloke in the recent ad's comments as he shops.

I look forward to the next ad ...

It's interesting that some of the biggest successes in computer OS had such horrid names conjuring sexual inability:

UNIX

MICROSOFT

Perhaps Apple would get 60% of the market if they stopped naming their OS after cats and maybe used something like CAST RATIO or IMPO TENSE or OS SHRIVEL.

Ok, maybe not.

Ahaha... I can see the ad campaign now.

Again no basis.

Mac OS X didn't natively develop this "advanced power of the processor and memory", this was built in to the Linux kernels.

Vista fills memory with rubbish.. hmm that's very technical. I don't know how Vista would fill it with "rubbish". I hope you don't talk to your coworkers like this, which is why most of them would palm face and walk away from you.

My co-workers, my manager and the department head all think the same. Vista is clumsy trash. The only /facepalm is at Microsoft and their insanely overpriced, underdelivering, clumsy Vista operating systems.

Actually I think you should know that more and more public departments are switching to open source all over the world. Microsoft is seen as an expensive, underdelivering, bug ridden, unsecure platform - delivered by a greedy company.

Ok, so the PC is faster but how much of that extra power is used to run AV software?

Virtually none unless you get something really awful. I use Avast, it's unobtrusive and uses virtually nothing.

Anyway...

I like these ads. Yes, they're a bit one sided but then at least they're promoting a positive quality about a product rather than harping on about the perceived negatives of your competitors' products like those awful Mac vs PC ads.

Thats really all anybody needs to know right there.
Yes. But hardware and price are not trivial factors. Windows, in our opinions, is not as good as OS X in isolation. But a) that is subjective, and b) they can't just say that in a commercial, even if they believe it. Hence they highlight the fact that their OS provides more hardware choices, which is objectively true and is a major selling point for some (if not most) users.

Let's all just wait for Apple's response... it they even choose to respond.

The adds are catchy but have as much to do with truth as the new budget just signed by the prez... no truth and little relevance.

hah nice! people who know mac will feel the injustice of this ad, but you have to admit it's effective, and i'm sure it will work to get some people who don't know computers to assume that "macs are all aesthetics with no computer power". and that's fine. you can take the horse to the water but you can't make him drink it (or whatever that saying is).

the subject here is the ad, and even though i know it's bullspit, it's effective... nice job.

As I said before, Apple responded before these three advertising campaigns (Seinfeld, I'm A PC, Laptop Hunters) even began.

"Advertising, advertising, aaaadvertising...

Fix Vista."

And:

"PC, not saying the word *BEEP* isn't going to solve the problem..."
