Wait, you're saying Apple fans saying you can't compare that 699$ 17" HP to a MBP 17" are delusional ?

Ok...

Nope. I didn't mention any specifics but there's tons of silly comments in the first thread. I expect there to be some in this one too.

And really, if someone was looking for a laptop for $699 that was 17", how could you recommend a 17" macbook pro? Just curious. If all you had was $699 (and tax ) and you really wanted a 17" laptop and nothing smaller, how does a 17" MBP come into play? Remember, all you have is $699.

Great Marketing

I love macs. I evangelise them. But putting my objective hat on, I think these ads are really strong. They're aimed squarely at mass market, less technology literate people. Their strength is in the positioning of the mac as a luxury item. Sexy but expensive. In these economic times the message that PCs are able to offer a wide variety of "good enough" machines, is a strong one. This kind of marketing will never draw many (if any) customers back from macs to pcs but it might stem the flow of consumers moving to apple as a result of the ipod/iphone halo.

At a different point in time this might have been a weak strategy. Today, I think they'll have a positive effect for Microsoft and PCs. Expect to see a slow down in mac sales over the next 12 month period.

Macs still rule. If you can afford one then I think you'll not find a better computing experience. Not everyone needs the best computing experience. Not everyone needs a BMW. For many people, a Ford is good enough.

AT&T sells the iphone. Does Apple advertise AT&T? No.

It's that huge hardware base that helps to make Windows the unstable mess that it is. Apple, Sun, and other companies that value stability, reliability, and user experience specifically choose to limit the hardware base so that they can thoroughly test the drivers and OS while making sure that the speed and stability meet user needs. It's all of the unforeseen, and untestable, combination of hardware and drivers that adds to the instability of Windows. My Mac Pro has an Nvidia 8800GT. If I want something faster, Apple offers the ATI Radeon 4870. If I want something cheaper, Apple offers that, too. I don't need to have a selection of 10,000 video cards.

You know, I love Ape just as much as thenext gay, I mean guy(stupid iPhone typing), but I think people underestimate Msft. When vista cane out it was lame and fir years they had to support win so, 98, 2003 server, me, and vista drivers. Now win 7 looks srtong and only one os to write drivers for. I do NOT think they will make the same mistake twice. In fact, they are using marketing that seems to work.

i like macs and i have switched from pc to macs

All world are wrong for using PCs? All companies are wrong for using Windows Servers?

Mac are overpriced no doubt of that. The iphone don't a stupid SD card! i have a 100€ phone that have memory card, mms and copy and paste!

What about the lack of firewire on the new macbook? Many 600€ pcs have firewire...

Apple can do better...

WHAT marketing? Microsoft hasn't said anything about their OS in either of these commercials.

Windows is shutting down.......Windows is shutting down...........Windows is shutting down....................Windows is shutting down.........................

ok....just shut down for God sake

That was the premise of the commercial. I, as previously stated, know that this is part of the "gapping" hole in the Apple product line-up. You can't get a big monitor on the cheap on your laptop, you need to step up to the pro line.

wait. So those contracts that said at&t weren't from AT&T at the apple store and apple doesn't get $20.00 per month per user as states inthe Apple/AT&T licensing agreement?

Oh sure they do. Don't let the rainbows blur your vision LOL.

Haha, that's not what I mean. The person's comment was "Do you complain when AT&T advertises for the iphone." So I'm saying that doesn't make sense, he's thinking in reverse. AT&T provides phone service, Apple provides the phone, which is why you never see a commercial made by Apple saying things like "Try AT&T because their service is better than Verizon's." Got me? ;)

The first one was much better. This guy knows what he's talking about when it comes to hardware but it just doesn't come off as average joe.

Also, Fry's Electronics <3

Yeah but many PCs don't have firewire just like the macbook and macbook air, so not all PC's have firewire like you want us to believe. The 600 dollar mac mini has firewire.

4-pin FireWire isn't that hard to find on a laptop. 6-pin full sized is tough though.

My ancient Compaq had 4-pin FireWire on it.

Not to mention the fact that (and I know I'll get flamed for saying this) firewire is a dying protocol. The vast a majority of consumer devices (save some external harddrives) are USB 2.0. I can only think of a few pieces that offer a FW only option.

Even so, if you need firewire and you can only get a MacBook, you can always get an expansion card with firewire ports.

*EDIT* My bad, no card slot.

Yes, but a so short product lineup some limitations don't make any sense. Specially if you look at the price (ex: no video recording on iphone that costs 500€ in Portugal) Do you understand what i meaning?

by the way macbook don't have expansion card.... another stupid thing

It sounds better than: "Windows 7. We'll do better this time. Honest."

Tell me about it... LOL.... :)

The ads are two for two - never had a problem with any HP computer I owned or church/friends/work owns.

Gee, I wonder why the ads haven't mentioned Dell...

Ooh, just thinking about a Dell... (I just threw up in my mouth...)

Us creatives need the tech and if you don't need so much, you get a MB. But if all you want to do is surf the web and check your facebook account, get an iphone. There's no point in owning any computer with more computing power than the current iphone if that's the only purpose for it. In any event, the tablet will soon be here. :D I think that will fill that gap nicely, but once again, will probably be geared towards those of us who would like to do some serious computing.

That would be a very limited point of view. You have two options, a macbook and iphone for all purposes and economic status? People think different and have very different needs. They can get whatever they want with their own money. Just because you like apple it doesn't mean that everyone has to get one of their products.

False advertisement!

Since when these PCs have better configuration than Macs?!

Even the MBA has better cpu cache and faster RAM this this piece of JUNK HP laptop!

Macs all the way till Microsoft gets its act together and maybe give up making DOORS (sorry, windows lol)

One thing I'm not hearing people say much about is long term customer satisfaction with their purchase. Try talking to people who own HPs and Dells about how satisfied they are with their computer a year or more down the line; personally, I don't think I've met anyone who has been very enthusiastic. It's usually, "yeah, it works" or "it's alright." Whereas, ask people about their Macs and I almost always get a response like, "I love it!"

I know I'm more satisfied by my 2 year old Mac than any other piece of electronics I have owned. I would (will) pay the premium on another Mac in the future because I know that my satisfaction with my product isn't going to decrease very much - unlike for my Dell that I had prior to my Mac that was too thick, too heavy, not sturdy, paint wore off, etc.

Unfortunately this is one of the things that the average consumer, who I will assume is foolishly only looking for immediate return, is not going to think about.

I can't explain it, but these ads make me want to get a Macbook. I mean, I've wanted one for a while, but these ads give me hope that Apple might respond with some kind of price drop so I'll have a higher chance of being able to get my hands on a Macbook. :D :apple:

Meh, Dells really aren't that bad (better than HPs IMO). If my semi computer illiterate parents can use them with no problems, then I'll keep buying them on the cheap.

HP has to be getting a cut on these commercials though because they're really the only other brand mentioned besides Apple of course.
