It's actually Aluminium in the UK, the place where it was discovered.

And You're "Points" are just silly.

Well, it's spelled and pronounced "aluminum" in U.S. English; the British English spelling is considered misspelled in U.S. English and violates Safari's spelling checker. No, his points are valid, especially the discount one. First, you made a generous assumption that he is a student. Even if he is the student discount is not 15%, and there is no student discount at all if you buy from a retailer besides the Apple store (i.e. the retailer that he was at).

Geez, 2 MS ads that show ppl choose PC over Macs cause of price already getting to ppl? Geez....HEY MORONS, APPLE CHARGE PREMIUM FOR THEIR PRODUCT CAUSE TO FUND THEIR OSX AND PRO APPS DEVELOPMENT. Look at Apple Aperture, its sold at almost half the price of Adobe Lightroom. And ever wonder why Apple sold the whole package of Leopard at only the price of Vista home premium? and don't need to create separate packages like MS does? Cause when you pay for a Mac, you basically pay for these "Apple taxes" which MS gloats about.

MS is a software company, period, HP is a PC company period, Apple? Its both! So being both they can be complete control over their products and of course having competition is healthy but if people cannot make a judgement on why Company A is doing this and etc then Company B and etc etc. then I must say you are a lame buyer.

And of course this ad got a few contradiction such as a 16" notebook is considered portable for him and being a PC ad, they only show he going through HP, I bet if others PC makers complain to MS that their notebooks is not getting attention, and perhaps sue them, MS will get a real headache.

Wondered why MS cannot dominate the smartphone market as how they did in the PC? Cause smartphone is more controlling then PC (well that how the market end up), Look at Blackberry, they do total control of both their hardware and software and now they managed to improve steadily over the market, look at Palm, they certainly wowed people with the Pre and that is cause total system integration, den come Apple which has all the while maintain a complete control of its business model, look at how successful the iPhone is and that is partly cause of system integration, earlier of their history, this strategy sucks but look at now, everybody is happy with how a Mac works, especially notebooks, most ppl commented that Apple trackpad is generations ahead of PC notebook trackpads although it requires some getting use to.

Well its understood why MS is doing this ads but seriously, why are they so scared? PC developers are tied at using Windows nway. But I gotta admit that this ad is better then the Lauren one.

I think all of these ads come as an strategy to prepare the road to Windows 7. First they are saying that Windows based machines are cheaper. Then when Windows 7 comes, they are going to say the are cheaper and they have a great OS.

Effective ad, but as a "tech savvy" person myself I find it incredibly sad that they portray that to the average person by just throwing out "jargon".

Oh he said gigahertz! he MUST know something!

I find it amusing that anyone who views this without their eyes in Steve's colon are considered "microsoft lovers" who shouldnt even be on this site.
I agree with Stevearm up there, does that make me a "windows lover"? Mind you, i havent seen the windows install on my computer in several months. But i dont see Apple as the computing equivalent to Jesus, so i must be a "windows lover" who showed up to the party just to pick at apple, right?

Yeah well that's we will call you if you call others fanboys, funny thing is most of your posts are bashing Apple and supporting Microsoft.

3DS Max, Finalrender, a good stable version of ZBrush just to name a few that are industry standard these days.

And a consumer would be genuinely interested in those applications because ? Those aren't the kind of software you find off the shelves or run on a cheap HP laptop...

lol

I am a lawyer for a V10 firm. That's beside the point.

Majority of the fanboys were attacking the AD as baseless. The ad is perfectly warranted. By your own admission you admit that Apple can not compete with the prices set forth by OEM PC manufactures. Thus, the only reason you buy a Macintosh is for looks/OS.

The ad was just showing that realization, you can buy a cheaper PC than has better hardware than a MAC.

You know, it's hardware that makes compiling times faster, dvd ripping quicker, hd playback smoother.

You're a lawyer? I thought lawyers were highly educated people, who could use a spelling checker and write grammatically correct sentences, and could put forward a logical argument. You fail in each category. Look, if you start your post with "I am a lawyer for a V10 firm", appealing to the authority that this is supposed to give to your opinion, then you can expect us to shred this authority apart. If you had started saying "I am twelve years old and my dad says PCs rock", your post would have been forgivable, but not for someone who claims he is a lawyer.

Nobody has ever admitted that Apple cannot compete with the prices of other PC manufacturers. Fact is that Apple deliberately chooses not to compete on price. When a top manager at Apple says "we don't know how to build a laptop for under $500 that isn't crap" then we all add what he hasn't said: "... and neither does anyone else, but that doesn't stop them from selling laptops for under $500, and believe me, they are crap". Do you really think Apple builds the cases for its laptops from a single block of aluminium because they haven't figured out Dell's secret manufacturing process for cheap plastic cases?

And what is that nonsense "the only reason you buy a Macintosh is for looks/OS"? People make educated buying decisions. When they buy a computer, they weigh up multiple factors: Product quality, reliability, quality of service, reputation of the manufacturer, upgradability, green qualities, design, usability of the software, all added together and measured against price. Macs beat PCs selling at the same price in most of these measures, even though Apple sells Macs at a healthy profit, which most PC manufacturers don't. The whole package is better.

Then you make the claim "you can buy a cheaper PC [sic] than has better hardware than a [sic] MAC". You can buy a cheaper PC. You can buy a cheaper PC with a processor running at a higher clock speed. But that is not enough to make it "better hardware". "Better hardware" has to take most of the criteria into account that I mentioned, in fact all except "quality of service", "reputation of the manufacturer", and "usability of software". Product quality, reliability, upgradability, green qualities, and design are all things that count when you compare hardware. Once you stop pretending to be blind to the realities of life, you find that finding better PC hardware for less money than a Mac is really, really difficult. And it would have to be a lot cheaper, because if you don't take service quality and software quality in account, you are a fool.

Good post.

Another example: http://www.notebookcheck.net/uploads/pics/touchpad_38.jpg
That could have EASILY been larger.
That's what she said. :p
Another classic example of MS promoting macs in their own ads, at least this time they used an actor:

lol, the laptop was a MBP

Who's crying. It just means we're at phase 2 :

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
Where is that from?
Once my wife and I had some people over (christmas party) and we intentionally left out our HP laptop and MBP for people to use. It was a fairly big party with lots of people who'd want to frequently google stuff. We'd watch as people went to the MBP first and then only if someone else was using the mac did they go to the HP.

Expensive or not, people know what they want.
What kind of Christmas Parties to people go and google things at? I never heard of one.
He's trying to say that if it's a Windows commercial it should be about the Windows software NOT the hardware it's running on.

The ads are incredibly convoluted, they say that if you can get PC hardware that is cheaper than Apple hardware that somehow the Windows OS is the better choice.

Funny how these 'shoppers' don't compare the single most important spec, the OS.

It's interesting that some of the biggest successes in computer OS had such horrid names conjuring sexual inability:

UNIX

MICROSOFT

Perhaps Apple would get 60% of the market if they stopped naming their OS after cats and maybe used something like CAST RATIO or IMPO TENSE or OS SHRIVEL.

Ok, maybe not.
Best. Post. Ever.
How about the airport on MB and MBPs that looses connection every 5-10 minutes? State of the art and so user friendly isn't it?
Never had that issue with my Unibody MB. My friend has never had that issue with his 15" MBP
Absolutely nothing till it becomes your driving force and blinds you on many beneficial aspects or positive sides of what's hidden 'under the hood'.
It's not always gold what it shines (I think that's how you translate it :D ).

Very close. I believe the correct translation is, All that glitters is not gold.

Total side note, your english is outstanding for a non native speaker. What country are you from?

7.1lbs and 1.7" thick? LOL. :D Sometimes one must bay just a wee bit more for a good design. That's the whole reason my wife would love to trade her Mitsubishi (a perfectly good car) for a Mercedes. And its the whole reason I sold her HP laptop to buy a white Macbook a year ago. :)

Fair enough, but remember - you can take a Mercedes to any mechanic for repairs, and have any body shop add/replace components. You are not forced to buy the parts from a merc shop.
Apple, OTOH, requires that you buy everything from them. So this comparision is not exactly accurate, IMO.

Cue another 3,200 post thread... :D

Hmm. It requires Silverlight to view. Not going to happen. Do you have another link?

How bout industry standard flash for my iPhone?

Oh wait....

Hope newer phones offer it. Oh wait, they will. One rumored to run full flash 10 yay, I can watch hulu. No more lame azz apple tv hd. Hdmy azz

I'm not saying this because I'm a mac lover, but I think it's a terrible campaign.

I don't think it's too bad. The ads are focusing on cost. No one can deny that Windows-based laptops are cheaper initially. I'd say right now, people want cheap which of course is a double edged sword. Price is usually the first thing most people notice.

I had my macbook (alum) on my desk at work and some guy walks up and looks at it. He was telling me that he thought the macbook looked nice but he just bought his daughter a Dell 1330 for like $800 or so. He said he looked at Apples briefly but he said the cost was too much. This guy makes WAY more money (a lot more) than I do and he didn't get the mac because of the cost. I didn't argue or proclaim that macs are better since I'm not loyal to any company (or a "fanboy") but I can't say I wasn't surprised by his decision at all.

oh who the **** cares

For $1500, you can get a better PC than a mac.

Depends on your definition of "better". It comes down entirely to what you want from a computer and if you can personally justify whatever the price is. Apple just isn't for everyone, like everything in life.

the laptops they pick are hideous...funny thing is I bet if I email the guy "I'll trade you my Macbook Air for your HP" he'll be like "hell yeah"...these commercials suck!:D

I think the adverts are made for that the fact windows has been losing market share for quite a few months now, and apple have been gaining.

You mean like $900 for a motherboard, $500 fir a $99 graphc card or $10,000 for 32 GB if ram. LOL.

Shir esse puuurtee though. Lol

Ok.. i'll put it out there that I tend to be more of a fan boy, but.

These ads remind me of hate ads in elections .. I mean, the Apple get a mac ads were happy and or funny, and they didn't put a direct hate stamp on the PCs. There were a few ads, if I recall, that were more mean spirited, and people didn't like them as much, so Apple went back. These new Microsoft ads just feel angry or spiteful, and I don't think its cool that there are people that actually like the idea of Ads with mean attitudes towards either company.

Better is a very relative term, which is the crux of the argument thats going on here.

I switched over to Macs about 4 years ago because I found them to be a better computer for my needs. I have not regretted the decision once in that entire four years, despite a few limitations of the OSX platform.

You're better and my better are clearly not the same.
