Did they call Macs sexy in the ad, who calls the product they are bashing sexy in their ad?

That's the one thing that confuses the audience of the ad, calling the competitor's products 'sexy' and (in the Lauren version) 'too cool'.

But, these still are the most effective Microsoft ads I've seen in a while. And this Microsoft vs. Apple marketing war is just going to get bigger after Snow Leopard and Windows 7 will be released, with only a few months difference.

lol, lets dont fool ourselves, I have been in windows forum for at least6 years, and been here for more than 2 years, talk about complaints, lol, there is no comparison.

Apple users do complain, I guess you don't see the reactions when they update their products, LOL, just that they have less to complain about unlike windows users who have to deal with constant viruses and crashes. My dad fixes PCs so I should know about the world of windows and virus.

Geez, the pic of the dude in this commercial sure looks doofie to me. Smirky smile lobsided on one side, and the eye and eyebrows lobsided on the other! Kinda wierd

huh, better than John Hogman

No, I was just pointing out that your praise of the ad would've been justified if this was an HP ad. As it stands, it's a very bad for Microsoft, as it doesn't advertise anything that Microsoft does make.

Did I really need to explain that to someone in marketing ?

Too busy to argue - lets agree to disagree.

I think this is a very strong add. And if I was part of the team working on this, I'd be buzzing.

Many others in the industry would disagree with me. Like I said from the out in my original post... IMHO.

This isn't really a HP ad, or a widows ad - it's an anti-mac campaign. And IMHO, it hits the spot. Sales will tell though, of course.

Or indeed, a Windows ad. I'm not sure what an ad. for widows would look like, or whether I'd like to pitch for that job....

if it makes money, why not? Thats the good thing about diverse, you dont get tied on one product.

Plus, vista already has 23% marketshare....

They would be making less money than they would get with either Vista or 7. But since Ballmer himself said Windows 7 is just a Vista service pack, what do you expect, LOL.

As far as I can tell lately Macs are not exactly picking up on quality...
Just look at this forums... Why 95% of posters advise you to buy applecare??

for recent macs that is true, but my 2006 iMac has lasted longer than 3 PCs that a friend of mine had AND it can play crysis very well on medium even tho it's under minimum requirements (even of there are pop-ins ) so what i was really trying to say is the hardware can do more than the hardware is most PCs out there, but it does last longer also. on another note a gave a friend of mine a spare eMAc i had lying around and he likes it alot more than his pc and it is still working like new :D now thats quality

The job that Microsoft makes is great, did anybody stop and think in millions of hardware configurations that windows runs.

Apple runs in very limited number of computers that is more easy and don't compares with Microsoft job.

I fully agree with you on this. I'm still using my PowerBook G4 with OSX Tiger and it still runs great. Yeah it's a bit slower than when it was new but still a dependable notebook; and I never had to use my Apple Care. Now I'm just impatiently waiting my 2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro.

Hmmmm

Also amazing how Microsoft have in one campaign completely ruined Apple's "I'm a mac, I'm a PC" slogan.

Actually, it's taken three, count 'em, three ad campaigns to, as you say "ruin" the Apple ads. Funny thing is, people like you say that each and every time, and then Cupertino throws up another witty ad reminding everyone - not that it needs saying - that they are still the shizznit. And I wouldn't go as far as to say good. Average maybe. Oh and Microsoft still doesn't build hardware, this is just their latest tactic for ram rodding their OS on the public by fluffing crummy hardware vendors who are are at MS's literal mercy as they have virtually nothing else to go with.

While true, many end users (and, I would argue, the users targeted by these ads) don't care how hard the job is'; they care about their particular experience with the product. Microsoft may support millions of different configurations, but if they don't do it well then the end user will be dissatisfied and ultimately unhappy with the product.

Its the same thing when we talk about Mac hardware failure rates or customer satisfaction scores: they are all well and good but they don't mean anything to a customer who had a bad personal experience.

It's not Microsoft's job to make sure it runs on millions of hardware configurations. Microsoft ships this :

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/wdk/default.mspx

Then, hardware vendors write their own device drivers using this WDK (used to be called the Windows DDK) making sure their hardware is compatible.

How convenient...

OK, let me try to sum up a little more concisely what I was trying to communicate.

I think this is a strong ad. as part of M/S's broader anti-mac counter-strike in light of the wounds inflicted during the Mac vs. PC campaign.

The reasons I believe this is the case are in my original post.

Cheers,

SM

Usually, "Anti" anything ads are not well received. When you're at the point that your only argument is to bash the competition's weak points instead of promoting your strong points, you need to review your product.

People want to hear what you have to sell, not what the competition is selling.

as you can see, you should never expect any positive opinion towards microsoft here.

Since there are always multiple side of a story, you can be sure that there will be negative side comes up from people here, who, I have to say, are quite smart and philosophical.

I just hope they do the same for apple, but most of the time, they dont.

thats the same that apple do....

If apple ship OSX to all computers that will ruin apple for sure.....

The ads are good. That HP the guy bought is a really nice machine for the price. I just hope that these ads will make apple think about offering better priced products that 'everyone' can afford.

But the statement that apple is 'not about power' but aesthetics is false!! Look at the specs of the mac and it is quite high. They are also high-end machines that are built to last! I wonder how that HP will be operating/looking in 12 months time.

It doesnt matter that they are not advertising 'Windows' exclusively. There is a little bit of 'microsoft' there but it is not necessary. Whatever machine you buy that is not a mac will come with windows. The point is moot! The first thing a person sees is the hardware. Most people are smart enough to realise that performance depends largely on your hardware, and it needs to look nice, which the HP is.

If Apple were smart they would offer more models that dont carry the hefty pricetag. Apple would sell massive numbers of units and then MS will have a serious problem. Netbooks sell like crazy because of the price. Take a hint Apple!!!

I love apple and i will always buy apple, mostly because of the software and to a lesser extent quality/look of hardware. But everytime i fork out the money it feels like i have forfeited one of my limbs for the privilege. Im NOT poor, i am quite well off actually, but that does not mean i throw my money around without a care.
