neither is a car, but people still consider resale value

Hmmm. What's the resale value on a PowerBook G4 or PowerMac G5 these days, I wonder? Can I get more for my Mac Mini G4 1.42 GHz w/ 512 MB RAM that it would cost to buy me a real paperweight?

it does make you think...but i would never trade an HP brick of plastic for my Alum MacBook!

They underestimate the power of macs. He didn't even try it lol.

BTW, these “low powered Macs” can run Windows just fine too thank you.

However like said before this is a free country and every company has the right to make their own commercials as long as it's not obviously lying.

depends on what the paperweight is made of.

Ranges from $200-$400. Original model sold for $600-$700, if I'm not mistaken. From what I can tell, it's the model that was sold in July 2005?

Portability?

He wants portability and chooses a 7+ pound laptop that is almost 2 inches thick? Also how much battery life do you get out of an HP with a 16 inch screen?

I thought it looked like it had a number pad in the ad, and I was right. Wow, he wanted portability and went for a 16" laptop? Interesting.

But really, that looks like great value for money. It's $1099, which is $100 cheaper than a regular MacBook. It comes with vastly superior graphics (which match the second level MacBook Pro ), faster processor, double the RAM, 3x the hard drive space, larger, higher resolution display...

And it has FIREWIRE, unlike the MacBook. This dude got a good deal.

Windows doesn't know how to handle that hardware.

Lame...

Microsoft is using PC hardware because they can not compete as a software company, specially after the disaster Windows Vista is.

Of course, PC hardware is cheaper... the OS make the sistem less valuable, but they can not say that so they opt for the hardware (something they do not build by the way).

Actuall if you own a powerbook g4 12" the resale value is still great and we are talking about a very old machine here, in tec terms. Macs have by far and away the best resale value in this market, or course this market gets old quickly, but that doesn't the former a fact.

to each their own.

i do agree it is odd that microsoft is making commercials that isn't really advertising their product, and more so is just showing people that macs are too expensive or for cool people or whatever they are trying to say.

The problem that MS just does not get, is that specs for the vast majority of users, do not matter past a certain point. The only thing that matters, is which machine is going to provide a superior experience for the user. For what that guy wanted, I'll bet my last paycheck the 1299 macbook would have provided a better all around experience.

The average customer does not give 2 ***** about gigahertz, DDR3, etc. All they care about is the experience they have with the machine, and which is going to be the most positive.

I got a great deal on an Apple last year and was fully expecting to love it. It also had much better specs than my pc, which matters to me.

As terribly flawed as I find Windows to be, I returned the Mac and went back to my inferior pc because Windows provided the better experience

Yeah and a lot of people feel the need to put down Mac users because they can't afford Macs.

Take away the all the iMacs except for the highest end 24" model and you'll have a good idea in what kind of position a lot of laptop buyers are in. Not everybody needs the highest end most premium laptop. If you want a screen above 13" that's what exactly what Apple requires you get.

A computer is not an investment.

A platform is though.

Yes. And then the point about my intellectual property comes into play.

Fine, then. I, as a human, am not for sale, nor would I ever legally be for sale. I don't exist. Neither do you. Your point is rendered moot by the fact that neither of us exist to argue the point.

Please pick a different argument. Yours is nonsense.

Dude, its impossible to win with him and his type, let it go.

what a sad ad. Majority of public doesn't understand half of what he's sahying. Ghs, MBs, GBs, processor, speed. WTF?

Apple should made an ad:
MAC-no headache
PC-headache

lol

I agree, but in a more positive sense. I can vouch that I can do more things, more easily on a Mac than I could with Windows (and I am still fairly new to the platform). Apple needs to focus on this aspect of the Mac; perhaps by advertising what can be done by some 3rd party apps or even some basic things like the ability to save all web receipts as .pdf files rather than needing to print out every receipt like on Windows machine. The Mac becomes more appealing the more one learns what can be done with it and how easy it is to do those things.

When Apple increased the scope of their hardware beyond computers they changed their name from "Apple Computer" to "Apple".

If Microsoft is entering the computer hardware business perhaps they should change their name to "Microhard".

If anyone can do "pretty much" what they want with the ee pc, and most users can,
...

No, an ee pc is underpowered, you're exaggerating here. The average pc has hardware just as good as the average mac for a lower price. that's what people see and need.

I have an eeePC netbook (8.9", atom, 2GiB, 68GB) and it has plenty of power for typical tasks (surfing, email, documents, spreadsheets, IM, Skype, 3G).

These are the most common things that people use computers for - so in my opinion one would have to say that an Atom netbook *can* satisfy many or most people.

I bring my Netbook on business trips - its portability offsets any minor lack of power.

Get a better job or two if you can't afford macs.

I don't know why people say that many Mac users are elitists....

it does make you think...but i would never trade an HP brick of plastic for my Alum MacBook!

HP says that the model in question is Titanium.

And, by the way, I think if you say "plastic laptop" most people think of Apple Ibooks or the plastic Macbooks.

pwned!

And wait for Windows 7, with native multi-touch support embedded in the core system!

One great way HP slashes the cost on that machine, besides the obvious crap resolution on a 16" display (and not spending money making it lighter), is the RAM. The bus on that system is 1066Mhz, but it uses 667Mhz DDR2 RAM. But the dude wanted a "power" machine, and Macs (with DDR3 memory that runs at 1066Mhz) are mostly design machines.

Take a look at the $1599 MacBook specs. It's pretty darn comparable to that HP model at $1500, especially if you ignore the jacked-up 16" display on the HP. The faster RAM and need to not run all the security software is an instant speed boost. The 2.5 fewer pounds you'll have to carry will save you hundreds in medical bills. :)
