"concepts for the stores include an "Answer Bar" or "Guru Bar" similar to Apple's Genius Bar"

Form an ORDERLY queue, folks!

Clearly it wasn't a success because nobody I personally know has heard of the Microsoft store, while most have heard of the Apple store.

OK, so it was not an overnight success. Sometimes things fail. Remember how Apple was going down the drain before Steve came back? Of course people don't know about MicrosoftSF, that was 10 years ago, they had only one store. How many Apple stores are there now? Sure people know about the Apple stores, it's a given.

MicrosoftSF had much more to offer than just ONE line of products.

Hey, now they can sell their wannabe hipster t-shirt line at the Microsoft Store!

Now if they'll just add a concession stand, it will be the perfect retail experience.

No one is claiming that Apple invented the idea of the retail store, but come on, look at the plans for these new Microsoft stores - it's so obvious that they're photocopying Apple store blueprints it's embarrassing.

Guru Bar? Theater?

Everyone in the industry copies everyone in some way or another, that's a fact. Do you think the iPhone was the first phone with a touch screen? No. Apple just did a better job at executing the idea, but it was not an Apple original. Maybe MS will do a better job at executing a retail store?

I guess you think owning a specific brand of a product makes you "hip"? Ok.

Well the Microsoft fanboy in you is sure out in full force on these Apple forums.

The Apple store was unique. You couldn't get the products in most stores. Microsoft products are available everywhere, so why do they need a dedicated store? You can buy Pepsi products anywhere, why doesn't Pepsi open a chain of Pepsi stores?

I see this Microsoft retail thing failing because Best Buy, Walmart, Sams Club, Frys, and all kinds of other stores are practically Microsoft stores anyway in the sense that they sell all of Microsoft's stuff.

Well, since you joined MacRumors explicitly to praise the Microsoft stores, I assume you can hope so. ;)

I've been coming to this site for YEARS. Last night after reading 12 pages of this **** slinging back and forth I decided to let people know that MS had a retail store 2 years before the first Apple Store opened. No one had posted anything about it.

I like, and dislike, Apple and Microsoft equally for many reasons. It's the FANATIC either Apple or MS that I think is in the wrong.

Based on Microsoft's new line of fashion apparel, they apparently think so...

There is nothing "hip" about waring a computer product t-shirt, Apple or MS. Unless YOU think it is? Everyone lives in their own little world.

Maybe if you learned to think objectively, with logic and reason, everyone who disagrees with you would not feel like the "ENEMY FANBOY".

There are plenty of objective, logical and rational reasons given in this thread for the Microsoft stores being a bad idea if you care to read them. "Fanboy" has nothing to do with it.

Unless, of course, you disagree.

Then why does it almost always come down to fanboy, paid WinBot troll, or astroturfing when someone has a different opinion or has rational criticism of Apple?

It's getting old and predictable when the same people just drag up "You MUST be trolling." on Page 1.

Who is it a "bad idea" for? The hundreds of people MS will employ? In an economy that is doing really bad. Or a "bad idea" for people who are ranting about MS copping Apple?

I hear you dude! I guess "Think Different" does not mean munch.

It doesn't almost always. I never claimed this. This is the place to discuss Apple's shortcomings (about which I could go on all day). But if you can't recognize that there are some posters that are here solely to antagonize Apple's customer base (you know, around whom these forums are built), or market their competitors' wares, then I'm not sure I can help you understand. And their numbers have been growing in recent months, which I can't help but notice.

Its bad for everyone. We will now need to see Ballmer sweat and hop around while hyping the Microsoft store as being the bestest thing evar!!!! Then a reporter will ask him about Apple and he will laugh and say "The iPhone? Who wants that? The Apple store? Do people shop there?".

Ugh. He needs to go. Most of my disdain for Microsoft is because of him.

You can bring up and discuss Apple's shortcomings but no one else may?

Your response was quite emotional, and not too well thought out. Please try again.

P.S. Did you read the part about creating jobs in a bad economy? Or are you on auto-response?

Then the Apple brick stores should have failed since you can also buy Apple products at Bestbuy, Sears (at one time) Microcenter.

Microsoft products are available everywhere = more people want MS products.

The Apple store was unique. You couldn't get the products in most stores = less people want Apple products.

So if more people want MS product & even if its it more stores it has a chance of success.

A lot of "rational criticism" about Apple isn't really rational. It's often nonsensical (Psystar, netbooks, licensing out OS X.)

Fact is Apple has done nearly EVERYTHING right since 2006, and has shown signs of "Apple knows best" in 2001.

A lot of the criticism against Apple is unfounded. And besides, Apple usually goes on to prove the critics wrong every time.

Microsoft products are available everywhere = more people want MS products.

Not necessarily. They want something compatible with their current PC, which is possibly all they could afford at the time, and/or are simply using what everyone else is using (Windows being the de facto choice whether they like it or not.)

I still can't figure out how there is such a thing as a "Microsoft fan." What exactly is there worth being a fan of?? Office? The Intellimouse Explorer? MSN? It's like being a fan of drywall.

Apple fans, on the other hand . . . you can understand the reasons. They are apparent.
