The same way that saying "choice is grand" and claiming choice is always a good thing. And I'm not saying no-choice is grand. Just that too much choice can often be bad. We should avoid blanket statements like "choice is good".

Choice is good as long as it's not confusing to the consumer. The app store is huge, and there's an abundance of choice. What keeps it from being bad is active procurement from Apple, app news services from fans and various websites etc.

In other words, as much choice as you want so long as an informed decision can be made.

This thread is pure comedy in a bag. Many posts from insecure Apple enthusiasts who have nothing better to do than slam the competition.

Posts like Cut and Paste being old news. Really? Apple just got it a year ago - after many many many phones had it before.

Look how many phones there are - total confusion. Right - because it's much better to only have ONE choice when you're looking for any device? There's nothing wrong with having choices. Whether it's a mac or pc. Whether it's Verizon, Sprint, AT&T. Whether it's the iPhone or other phones. Everyone has different wants and needs from their device. If they ONLY had one phone - they might not sell as many - or they'd hear the same constant complaints Apple iPhone users have as to why their phone doesn't have X feature.

People saying it sucks without ever actually using it.

and so on

I'm not a troll. I enjoy my Apple products. I'm just constantly amused by the incredible lack of maturity and blind devotion to a manufacturer that it warrants such childish retorts. But I shouldn't be that surprised - should I?

Someone get this guy a cookie! Finally....a MR member who's not a damn troll who only cares about spreading Steve Jobs's ass cheeks apart!

All you haters - look at it this way: COMPETITION = CREATIVITY. The more pressure Apple is under to deliver, the better they have to make the product, period.

haha, now thats funny. i could have said iPhone just as easy

Well MS had six months to respond then. Looks like they spent them wisely. Or maybe Steve Ballmer pissed away six months trash talking it. That may have happened too.

Regardless. The iPhone wasn't walking into a crowded room trying to join a party. The iPhone had the luxury of having nothing comparable so they could take a few months and let people generate hype. Microsoft has no such luxury. A minuscule percentage of people are going to hold off on buying a new phone because they're waiting for the windows phone. Which swarms of people did for the iPhone.

Side note. Hey. Burgundyyears. I remember everything.

Sidestepping from the article, because I have no idea if the devices will be good or not, I am just curious what genius would put Ballmer out front to push products.

There's nothing photogenic, sexy, interesting, or enigmatic about the guy. He wears a black suit... get a clue and keep your suits brown and your mp3 players black. He sweats at the worst of times. He looks like an ape. He comes off like a used car salesman on a Friday afternoon short on sales and needing beer money for the Sunday game.

And Job's looks like he is dying from Aids and slept in the same clothes for the last 5 years. What is your point?

3 new iPhone 4's in the family and no intention of switching. And don't bother with the tablets either Microsoft...Got 4 of those iPads.

Wow...

I can honestly say, that once you look past the novelties and gimmicks, Android alone looks leaps and bounds better.

Not looking forward to the businessmen going "Bla Bla Bla Windows 7 Phone, Bla Bla Bla Synergy, Bla Bla Bla upgrade me." They then come back 1 month later complaining its ****. I proceed to say the same thing I've been saying over and over again.

Although it looks like its less aimed at businesses and more aimed at pseudo trendy folk so more pain for me.

Again. It does not matter if the iPhone was available on day one. The mobile landscape was completely different. If Microsoft is going to succeed, they need to get these phones into peoples hands and fast. Because in the current landscape of the mobile phone world, they won't be able to generate any of the hype that the iPhone was capable of when it was announced.

Your comparisons are completely invalid.

Maybe in you little world it is invalid. I can see that, but I hate to tell you... your responses mean nothing to me. As far as I am concerned you are nothing more that a troll trying to incite action from someone else.

I have an opinion and the single sighted such as yourself can trash us that like to see all around us all day long. People such as yourself will continually reply justifying and twisting anything to make it Apple is right, anything else is wrong period. So, go play with you Mac and have fun and I will go use my Mac for something more useful than trying to prove my opinion is the only one that exists.

What went wrong

1. WAY to many choices. It's exactly the appeal of the iPod to the Zune, and the Mac to the PC (for some people). Who wants to choose between 9 different phones that have their pros and cons. With most apple products, you can only go up and down, not sideways.

2. UI. Although it looks pretty nice, it seems like it has way too much information on the screen at one given time. I want to find what i want, that's all.

3. Technology. No copy-paste, etc. I know iPhone didn't have it, but WHY in the world would someone make that same mistake again.

4. Apps. From what I read on engadget, it seems that some apps will be carrier exclusive. What's the deal with that? I know iPhone is only on one carrier, but I honestly can't imagine Apple using different app stores based on the carrier. At least on Android, the app store is the same, even if the quality of them varies on different models.

5. 3 years late to the party. 1 or 2 years behind Android. Way more than 3 behind RIM. People already have their smart phones.

The only feature I like is the compatibility with XBox LIVE. Other than that, I'll stick with my Droid/iPod Touch combo, and hopefully a Verizon iPhone if that happens.

The system is great... To compete against the iPhone 3g.

This is 2010. Get copy and paste. Get third party camera support. Get multitasking. You're behind the ball Microsoft.

Really? Kinda ironic because people said that about Apple. WP7 is a good start for microsoft. If anything the iPhone UI is the thing that needs to be fixed. It's starting to look dated.

Ah, a healthy caveat added. No blankets in that statement. I agree.

A reasonable one added. With that minimalistic design, there's no reason to believe MS would overcomplicate the choices. Their xbox interface is very streamlined.

But how would you know that if you don't have it?

As opposed to the consumer pandering to every whim and desire of one CEO?

If you don't want any customization, then you are in luck! I have an old rotary phone I can sell you. $400 with a two year contract.

Straw man arguments are grand.

Yes, ive had customization and choice before. The fact is that it's not a high enough priority for me to warrant switching to another phone. The things that are the highest priority for me are the things that apple does well.

No phone is going to be everything to everybody. If customization is the most important thing for you and the guy I was initially replying to, then by all means, choose a different phone.

Apple consumers hardly "pander". Apple makes the best product they can, and say take it or leave it. It is a business model that produces much more customer satisfaction than one that tries to please everybody, and not just in the mobile phone world.

Chick fil a and their limited but streamlined menu compared to mcdonalds (mcribs? Mc Donalds pizza?). They make far less money and have far less locations but the customer satisfaction numbers are worlds apart

Sure Smartphone Wars.

It's like Apple is the U.S.
Google Android is like the U.S.S.R. - Google TV will be their Chernobyl.
And M$ is like the U.K. - They used to rule the world, but now they're just the small island that is slowly losing relevance.

You sound desperate. I like Apple but their TV is sure is missing many important features, some that I am sure the Google TV will implement. Also, comparing the introduction of a television with the Chernobyl disaster is in bad taste. :apple:

I seem to remember something called, iPod, iTouch, Nano, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Air, iMac and the 3000 dollar desktop. Concerning the actual phone models, are all models available on all carriers?

2. UI. Although it looks pretty nice, it seems like it has way too much information on the screen at one given time. I want to find what i want, that's all.

OK, that's fine for you, to bad the world is not just you.

3. Technology. No copy-paste, etc. I know iPhone didn't have it, but WHY in the world would someone make that same mistake again.

I did not realize from reading the various post on this thread that Apple made mistakes. Are you sure about that? Maybe they are taking a page from Steve Jobs: We want to do Cut and Paste right. Then make commercials like they invented it.

4. Apps. From what I read on engadget, it seems that some apps will be carrier exclusive. What's the deal with that? Have to agree, bad move there.

You say late to the party, and include Google, and Rim, seems like you are countering your own point.

It's not my little world. It's an industry where millions of phones exist and are successful. You can have an opinion and that's fine but it's simply not backed by any industry data or trends. Sorry you feel insulted. But the world doesn't operate by saying everybodys opinion is worthwhile and valid.

Besides. What exactly were you doing when you came onto this board and saying "apple didn't have an app store on day one/apple didn't release the iPhone the same day as it was announced" but trying to prove your opinion was the most valid (or as you say, the only one that exists?). You threw the first stone.

Microsoft is now the little guy when it comes to phone OS... So does Thant mean they will take over the world within 5-10 years? Apple, android, MS, who will win?

You don't feel it can be improved upon at all? Are you willingly disillusioned? Have you used webOS or Android?

Yes I have. Are you saying that there's something wrong with me for being content enough with something that I have no strong feelings to see it changed?

saw a phone run win7 at a bar a while back (no, really..). it's actually a pretty clean, crisp looking OS. didn't really get to play with it too much, but from what i saw, the interface seemed fairly intuitive (particularly side-swiping between apps). i don't want to necessarily be premature, but msoft may have something here-

All you haters - look at it this way: COMPETITION = CREATIVITY. The more pressure Apple is under to deliver, the better they have to make the product, period.

This is a misconception.

Apple created the iPhone with no competition (at least none that was even remotely challenging.)

Same for the iPad.

Apple created the competition.

Now look at these products today. Apple needs no competition to innovate, just a whole lot of bad attempts by others they can obliterate almost overnight.

Look at the iPad competition. What creativity??

Apple takes risks on their own initiative. They're driven by their philosophy when it comes to tech, plain and simple. When SJ was on sick leave from Apple, Tim Cook put out a mission statement about the company during the quarterly conference call that time. Read it. Apple is one of the few that actually walk their talk (and ride out a recession like it was nothing.) It's a big part of the reason they've risen to be #2 right behind Exxon and closing fast in the span of only a few years.
