Sidestepping from the article, because I have no idea if the devices will be good or not, I am just curious what genius would put Ballmer out front to push products.

There's nothing photogenic, sexy, interesting, or enigmatic about the guy. He wears a black suit... get a clue and keep your suits brown and your mp3 players black. He sweats at the worst of times. He looks like an ape. He comes off like a used car salesman on a Friday afternoon short on sales and needing beer money for the Sunday game.

Exactly! I just don't get it. If anyone needs a serious makeover, it's Ballmer. The thing is, who do you get instead? And what kind of message would that send? My guess is that there's nobody at MS who can tell him "no". And as unappealing as Ballmer is, people know who he is. Man... just a better haircut and a little diet/exercise would do wonders...

Edit: Just looked at the photo more closely. Seems he did lose a few pounds, and trim the mop. Didn't help much.

I look forward to this OS crashing and burning like everything else Microsoft does. I've given Microsoft its share of chances, but after a series of terrible Windows releases, a slow, buggy Zune, and a chronically red-ringed Xbox that they refuse to fix for under $99, I am done.

I'm not a militant iOS guy, but I cannot see this Microsoft OS doing any damage to Apple or Google.

Its arguments like this that really make any valid points the "fanboys" make invalidated. Basing products on the way the pitcher looks is stupid. Look at Woz. Hes fat and a nerd but we love him because hes a genius. Im not saying Ballmers a genius but come on if you are going to target something target the product.

I am not denying your problems with these products, but I feel Windows 7 is an equivalent competitor to OS X, the Zune never struck me as buggy in the least, and while the red rings were a problem, they've never happened to me.

Why not? I am sure the vast majority on here do not know Steve Jobs personally and yet I am sure he has something to do with you having Apple products since Apple would fail without Steve right?

Personally, if I see a products consumer base are a bunch of crap talking kids and/or narcissists, why would I want that product?
Exactly where I'm coming from. People think that I'm quitting based on idiots spewing crap on here. Not really. I've gotten heat in real life based on your idiotic actions, and I'm left being apologetic for things I don't even believe in.

One thing I hate is popping my Macbook Pro out somewhere and having an Apple geek start spewing anti everything else crap at me. Its tough being associated by default to such a "cult".

Win7 Phone OS looks slick and refreshing! Altho i does seem like they have an uphill battle.

I am a tech guy, so I will probaly give it a try. Unlike apple fanbois on here, I try other devices before i bash them completely!

Iphone is definately NOT on the edge of innovation anymore... with every new phone or OS release from competitors, they get more and more behind!

Yeah. We were just holding the wrong way...

I got my iphone 4 at launch and have not been able to replicate the antenna problem. And from apples report, less than 2,000 people nation wide have actually complained about the problem. Out of the 3 million per month Iphones that are sold, that would be 1 in 1500 have had an antenna issue. That should come out to around 0.5 percent vs. microsofts 33.3 percent failure rate. No comparison. I don't have to wrap a towel (or a phone case) around my iphone to get it to work.

You could just send said Xbox to Microsoft to get repaired since they extended the repair window at no cost.

The same cannot be said for Antennagate.

Not enough!

Whilst the general consensus seems to be that the new Mobile Platform from Microsoft is good, I still don't believe it is enough to seriously put a dent in Google's or Apple's Mobile ambitions. There maybe a small upturn in fortunes for Microsoft in this arena, but ultimately i think it will be short-lived.

Android and iOS are just too good and to far away for Microsoft to touch.

Yay for you. Obviously there were never any issues at all with any Apple products.

Oops, sorry i just woke up...

complicated

I watched a demo of the windows phone 7 on youtube and it just looks too confusing. You have to go through 20 different tiles to get to what you want. I'll stick with one touch to get to what I want. The other features of the phone have been around for a while now but do compare to others so the specs are not that bad but the OS itself just looks like a headache. I like how just about every phone except the blackberry looks just like an iPhone now. Copy cats!!!!

I went through 3 360's within the original warranty period, before I bought a ps3 and have not had a problem yet. Replacing something with a refurbished device that will give me the same problem is not helping a customer out at all. I eventually bought the new HDMI xbox without the heating issue and it red ringed within 3 months. Replacing something doesn't keep the device from continually failing. I work at Geek Squad City and know a ton of people who have went through several 360's within a 2 year period. And while we're on the subject of failure, where I work I fix laptop computers. 1 out of every 4,200 computers with a software issue is an apple computer, the rest are windows PC's.

You probably will not see this but you seem to have an aversion to the risk of losing an argument. How sad that you would call other people ignorant and then storm off and ignore people because they called you on it.

The Prada phone was just a re-skinned WinMo phone.

Here is my background:
- Developer with 12+ years of experience on windows desktop and client/server applications.
- Implemented SOAP web services and web service clients on .NET (C#), Java and python.
- .NET remoting servers and clients.
- Implemented a perl based e-commerce solutions on Linux/MySql stack.

I used to be a windows user at home and I was involved in the modding/customization scene for a number of years before switching to macs at home so I speak from experience when it comes to "SKINNING" of interfaces.

There have been issues with apple products. I am not denying that. I am just simply saying there are very few people that have had a problem compared to the amount sold. And when Microsoft give incentives to media outlets to over play the iphone 4 antenna issue, it appears to worse than it really is. I have had problems with apple products in my life and am not denying their failures. My new imac had a screen issue but my 2001 imac has never had one issue and is still being used daily. That's just the way is goes, but the massive amount of failures from microsoft products is what forced me to move to apple for good. And I don't regret it. I am not a fanboy. When microsoft makes a product that works and doesn't over heat or blue screen often I will buy it. But until then I'll stick with my apple products that just work.

No Tablet Strategy

I apologize if this has been mentioned.

What I haven't seen anyone talk about is that WM 7 is just for phones - it won't be running any tablet device anytime soon and this is due to some of the deep structural issues at Microsoft. At Microsoft every division competes against each other and so turf wars happen all the time, to the detriment of the company. The Windows 7 desktop group have claimed tablets as their domain, so while WM7 might just be fast, responsive and touch enabled, Windows 7 (desktop) is not and that is all you will get on a tablet for the foreseeable future.

All the argument in this thread about WM7 vs iOS has missed the crucial point - iOS (and Android) were built to run mobile devices - whatever they may be - WM7 was built to run a phone, and that's it.

Once again Microsoft introduced a new shiny gizmo to battle in a war that is already over (mobile phones). MS will continue to get pounded in the tablet space by both iOS and Android.

While the tiles may not be visually appealing to a lot of people, they do illustrate that iOS' UI is in need of an overhaul.

I agree. The "Folders" feature was just a quick fix for an unorganised interface that seriously needs an overhaul. I love iOS, but the home screen and lock screen need more functions.

Whether it will succeed or not, I cannot say. The interface is a refreshing concept -- at least its not a total copy-cat of what we've seen.

However, I literally got bored with how this was presented. The person with the most charisma was De La Vega from AT&T (what does that tell you?). The guy who gave the live demo of the phone was hoping for applause for clicking on an address and having it open up in maps? Or was he hoping that their text correction feature would really excite us?

The "I'll be late" feature was remotely interesting, but not nearly as cool as what Palm Pre showed with checking your current GPS location versus the meeting location and automatically asking you if you want to send a late notice.

I got so bored half way through that I stopped watching.

There may be some cool features there, but they failed to captivate me in the demonstration. I personally hope they put up a decent contender, because I love competition in this market. I'm not terribly optimistic though.

1 out of every 4200 is a PC. What are the numbers of Macs to PCs in the world? 1 for every 10,00-15,000? If so those are great numbers.

And please don't start us on the it just works...

This is kinda weird that they didn't make it available for future devices. I guess they didn't want to invest too much into something that won't go anywhere. Same reason Microsoft completely cancelled all development on the Courier tablet the day after the iPad was announced. They know they can't compete so why throw money away. People didn't buy the Zune and this is just a Zune phone. The xbox and other integrations are the only thing that makes it stand out. Can't wait for sony to make a PSPhone = joke.
