That's ridiculous.

Some people like Bing and would like to have it as a choice on their iPhone.

A very small minority of people even use Bing. It's typical MS trash that they will shove down your throat with partner "agreements", which they'll then use to lock you into using their product. Finally, they will get rid of the competition by force bundling their product and not allowing other choices.

That's the MS way. If people want Bing and want to help MS destroy yet another part of the Internet with their proprietary crap, they can get a WinMo phone.

And... what kind of privacy expection does my door have ? It's seen by hundreds of people everyday seeing how I live on a street with a lot of traffic.

I seriously don't get your "Privacy in public places" argument.

Drive up next to my house and take a photo of it and I'll show you.:)

You don't think you are overreacting?

How is it trash? Seriously..no one has even come close to providing a reasonable argument other than mud slinging.

Google didn't lock people into using Google? REALLY? Force bundling their product not allowing choices??? Are you the EU?

Put down the hater juice for one second people. Btw...the Bing usership is rising (taking Yahoo usership over Google but still raising).

Did you even read the articles ?

Can you even make out what it is she finds wrong with the picture ? All I see is garbage. I had to read the article to even find out why she was complaining.

Again, what you can see from the street is not the privacy of your own home. This is only invasion of privacy for people that don't know what the word means to begin with and probably post all sorts of crap on Facebook.

Seriously, to compare this to a company that almost destroyed the vendor neutral web with their crap and locked a ton of content to their platform only, destroying any chance of competition is ludicrous. Microsoft needs to be shunned by the entire Web and computer industry, as much as possible. They need to be replaced with open standards and technologies and never again given an opportunity to succeed.

No, I'm not overreacting. It was overreacting back in 1989 when MS was preventing Windows from running on non MS DOS. Of course, back then was when the industry should've said "enough is enough". We know where that road leads now.

And I've made perfectly clear why it's trash : It's made by Microsoft. The worst company to ever grace the software industry. That's its only flaw (actually, it has many others, like the fact its spiders destroys websites because the programmers can't be bothered to properly implement their own robots.txt directives, but that's another story).

Dude or Girl it clearly says BETA, what do you expect with a beta?? Loose beta and then will have a valid debate.

Beta has had its meaning beated and clobbered by developers that dont want to admit that they cant code well.

Hell even Gmail is Beta, yea its been out for a few years buts its still a beta right? Perfectly valid reason to allow any systems breakdowns.

What I dont get is that WE ARE TALKING ABOUT a search engine and maybe a map provider Now we've got people that are going on about some partnership conspiracy, that Apple and Google will be big buddies forever and ever. You know what? The FTC might get suspicious with the change to exclusive Bing services. I mean its Microsoft right, and not Google. So they wouldn't care... Plus Apple already knows how to say no to Google. ALA Google Voice denied.

Some people here need a hobby... badly.

Oh yea, about thew Robots.txt thing. Why should I have to do more than Robot Meta tags? Its sufficient for everything but Bing.

Yeah ok, there is no debating with you haha. I'll just say again, bing does some things better than Google.

One of my favorite is their image search features. Like Wallpaper search where it only brings up images that match your resolution. And again, i think their Maps bring some great features...and better satellite view.

But i also don't have any kind of salty distaste for Microsoft so i'm a bit more open minded i suppose.

That's only because people that ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Whose ignoring anything?

I was a Mac user in the 90s. My first computer was a Apple IIGS haha.

I just don't write off a company completely...well, ever.

If i like a product, i'll get/use the product.

Its not brain surgery or any sort of higher issue standard. So i'm not too sure what i'm doomed to repeat really....

I can imagine it now - both Steve's having a big smooch and slow dance, while whispering sweet nothings into each others ears.
:D

The odd couple - That's what I meant.

"- Er... Ballmer? It's Jobs. Er... can we use Bing on the iPhone?
- Bing? What the hell is that?
- Er... you know, it's your search engine. We've got a little problem with Google. Actually, we have a serious problem with Google. But we have this awesome device called the iPhone and...
- Hah, you don't say! Why don't you use your own search engine?
- It's difficult. But don't worry, we don't plan to use Windows on our computers.
- You still have that thing, whatever it's called... Puma, that's it!
- Actually, it's Snow Leopard...
- That's it, Leopard!
- SNOW Leopard, er...
- Whatever, do you want to come over and ask me nicely? Man, you shouldn't have messed with Google. Oh man, this is f@@@ed up! You are doomed! Hah, YOU are crazy!
- Brrr.
- Hey, Jobs! One more thing... Wear white turtleneck, will you?"

this is totally unfair i think bill gates have completly lost it.... google is the best search engine ever.. what are they gonna replace with "wikipedia".... not good amegos

Of course, if you appreciate being forced into MS products and OSes because any other choice is close to unusable because no other company has access to Microsoft's specifications and the current open standards are ignored by the "good" people at Redmond, then go right ahead and use their products and encourage others to do so.

After DOS, Windows, the Web, I think I learned my lesson. Especially the web part. I'm sure all those people still stuck doing web developpement or desktop support just love the fact that IE 6 is a requirement even today in 2010, the alternative being to rewrite huge chunks of non-standard code.

As a Linux user and Unix sysadmin, I can't even begin to count the number of interop nightmares MS caused me. If Apple does go through with this, I'm not sure I can keep giving them my money. I stayed Microsoft free for the longest time, even if it sometimes meant I had to do things in a non-orthodox way. Everything is getting better nowadays as more people realise what mess MS made of things in the industry and moves away from vendor lock-in type solutions.

Hopefully, this is just a bad rumor.

WTF are you talking about; replacing Wiki?

This isn't that surprising, CEO of Mozilla said they might do the same thing

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Microsoft, but making somebody use bing should be a crime against humanity. Although I doubt Apple will go this route.

John

here is what I have come to figure out. Many people here bash bing for one reason and one reason only. It is from MS. They never even give it a chance or ever really even bother trying to learn how to use it.

They go in looking for a reason to hate it and then proceed to bash it. I have played with bing a little but I hardly ever use it. It did not seem to offer me enough to make it worth switching so I honestly do not know if it is better or not. It not enough better if it is to make it worth switching.
My GF loves Bing and prefer using it over google. I on the other hand prefer to use google. She ask me why do I not give it a chance and my reasoning is I like Google and Bing does not seem to offer me enough to make it worth switching. That and the Google preview extension in firefox. Their is nothing like that at all for Bing.

What I have seen of bing does not warrent the hatered that seem to come up on this site about it. I find it is a hell of a lot better than yahoo search.

My problem with the iPhone is you are limited to only 2 search engines. It would be nice to add more to the library of choices to use.

Wow, this decision if true is really disliked by the mac faithful. I don't like it myself but the tally of those against this idea is staggering compared to those that find this positive.

I just tried Bing maps, and really I'm not impressed.

Tried viewing in 3D mode (using Safari ) and got this message:
"3D is currently not supported for your browser. For a list of supported browsers, see Help"

There isn't a hyperlink for "Help" in this message... you have to look around and find that "Help" is in the bottom right hand corner, in small font.

The UI is a disaster.

Additionally, Bing Maps relies on ActiveX for 3D mode, which sucks, so its windows only. There's little excuse for this. If Google, Nokia et al can do a multi-platform 3D mode, then so can microsoft.

Google Maps is vastly superior.

Maybe its just to try and create some leverage / fear within Google,if an announcement like this would be capable of doing that to Google or not is another story though.

Agreed. Microsoft has proven untrustworthy beyond a reasonable doubt over many years of shifty business practices. A tiger, as they say, does not change its stripes. Tying into any of their products is a bad idea. Apple should know better (and hopefully does).

Oh dear.....

Im afraid to say that today i have taken delivery of a nice Nokia 3720 phone. I've had an iPhone 2g and 3g, but im selling and getting out of the iphone. My problem is with Apple and its walled garden approach to A) Developers and B) End users. This article is a prime example of B, if true and i think it is as the google CEO was taken off the as an Apple director (i think) and the two companies are now most definitely are competitors.

You could see Apple blocking google as a search engine, no google maps, no google Apps (?!) and you'll be locked into whatever Apple comes up with to replace google.

The wall around the garden gets even higher.

Disappointing Apple.

Ex fan of Apple.

Wait, you mean the feature so many people are touting in this thread, the 3D map view is tied to Windows and trying to depend on it will only result in you being locked-in to their platform ?

Wow, what a surprise.

This is their MO. Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Rinse, repeat until there is only Microsoft. Open standards and interoperability means nothing to these guys, they don't give a crap about consumers and choices.

I love it. The name MS is mentioned and there's 19 pages of nothing!

Correction. 20. EDIT: Dammit. One post short. :p

Um, okay. There's nothing here that says Apple is going to block Google as a search engine option.

More iPhones for me!

Yep, exactly. Like someone said previously, a "leopard never changes its spots".. and this goes to show, microsoft has never changed.

I gave microsoft too much credit in thinking they'd make Bing platform independent. I'll join you with the rolleyes...

*Mind you, Apple isn't much better - with locking in users.
