Ok it is about plate form independent as Google Earth. Silverlight works on a mac. I do not know about linux has I do not have linux installed on any of my computers

Nevermind Linux, what about Free/Open/NetBSD, Solaris 10/OpenSolaris, Android, iPhoneOS, Blackberry, PS3, Wii, HP-UX, AIX, Haiku (BeOS), Symbian, Maemo ...

The list goes on. This is the difference between open standards and proprietary. With open standards, every vendor is free to implement the technology. With proprietary stuff, we'd need MS to port their silverlight crap to all these OSes. Guess what ? Not happening (heck, even Adobe doesn't support all of them for Flash, and they have more reasons to).

Everyone of those platforms has a browser with HTML/DOM/CSS support because those are published standards they can implement.

Actually, other smartphone batteries DO last longer than iPhone, even when they are connected up to 3G internet all day et al.

Really? Which one?
Indepenent test results please. Anecdotal, unverifiable personal experience doesn't count.

Oh and please include only real smartphones. No Nokia N series or WinMo crap.

Umm those are real smart phones....... Sorry just because you do not like Win Mo does not change the fact that they are smart phones

Under you rules the only smart phones out there are the iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phones. All the others are either N Series or Win Mobile phones.

As for the iPhone battery draining quicker the things I have read is the battery life is on par with other phones but problem comes into play is the iPhone battery is not strong enough to handle the data demands of the iPhone and it kills its self. Powering the cell antenta drains the battery so running those data apps and apple push system kills the battery. Blackberry has the only true push system. The others all drain the battery a little quicker.

Either way when you factor in normal useage for each phone the iPhone battery life is not long enough. Normal usage on an iPhone has a higher data demand so therefor a higher power demand than other phones. iPhone battery on the weak side for its normal usage demands.

You just don't understand smartphone marketing. See, smartphones are all about defining a very specific subset of features that only your phone and its inferior competitors support, in order to make yours "The Best Smartphone".

There is no such thing as smartphones. All cellphones have pretty much been "smart" for the last 5 years.

Silverlight is platform independant ? Really ? News to me. Seems it runs on platforms MS decides to support and nothing else.

And please, pretty please, don't say Moonlight... they're about 2 versions behind the current Silverlight and will be constantly playing catch up.

That's not my definition of platform independance.

And btw no, Stella is right. The 3D view requires ActiveX :

The next iteration of silverlight is losing its independency anyway.

Technically that's not true.
The next version of Silverlight will have some features that take advantage of "Windows specific" capabilities.
These features are not being removed or blocked for other platforms.
They are simply not part of the other host operating systems.

SO what would you have liked it to use?

Flash?

Flash works like **** on Mac. At least Silverlight runs well and more efficiently. Hell...if you are going to complain about that..lets talk about how poor iTunes works on Windows platforms vs. OSX.

You are blind in your own hate.

Were did I say I used a win mo phone. My phone is a blackberry. You arethe one that seem to change the rules of a smart phone. As they seem to be defined else where as a phone require the 30 data plan. Turn out the os's are blackberry, palm, apples, winmo, android and symb. Those tend to be the smart phones.
But changing the rules because you hate ms and some hate nokia is not valid to throw them out.

Your open mind is a breath of fresh air on this forum.

Don't you find news media reporting about privacy a bit hypocritical? Check that....a LOT hypocritical.

Point is, 3D doesn't work because of Silverlight, contrary to the statement above. It doesn't work at all on OSX.

hey, we have a same mac :D

back to topic, i think this is the way to against google. apple think google will be strongest 'enemy' :D
CMIIW

It doesn't. It's good.
If I could change my default safari search engine to bing I would. Google gets more hits for things but Bing just gets the relevant ones. To me the image results are way better in bing than in google. The way they are presented is better in bing as well.

Results for "Apple computers"

google

Bing

Nice. That is a very good use of comparisons between Google and Bing.

These people can use Bing on their iPhones already.

Yes, but only via an app or by going to bing.com. They cannot select it as the search engine of choice in Safari app.

We're talking about Bing as the search engine on the upper right of a Safari window. As of now, it can be Google (which is the default selection) or it can be Yahoo! (the user must go into Settings>Safari to change it to Yahoo!).

I dont think people understand that this is not so apple can make money or anything, they are doing this to show that the iPhone still has the largest amount of mobile browsing then any other phone and they are basically gonna show google that they are still a huge competitor to them. To show that google still does not have all the marbles. This is gonna be a huge middle finger to google because it shows Apple would rather partner with Microsoft arguably the biggest competitor in Apple's history then Google. Im not a Microsoft fan boy in fact i can not stand there OS and countless bloatware and there search still has a lot of work ahead of them. But i like that apple is not acting like Google bitch and bending over to them. I really dont mind switching my default search back to google when i get my new iphone it takes 5 seconds and i will never have to do it again. My prediction Apple and Google will begin to start to get more and more competitive so competitive that each company will begin to stop using each others services gradually of course like maybe by the next 2 years, i think Apple has already realized this which why they have purchased a gps maping company and are looking at mobile advertising sites. Ounce apple has purchased another Mobile Ad site they will offer it as a built in API to the iphone os and offer a way bigger cut then admob does. Just my thinking.

No. If they do it it's so that they can make money. That's what corporations are for.

You must have huge pockets. ;)

Like, um, every other electronic device on the planet? Particularly competing products in the smartphone category?

The upward path of sales numbers seems to indicate you and your friends are an anomaly. I never think Apple is perfect, but they're the best thing going right now (and the market seems to agree).

Hey, I say use what works best for you and enjoy it. I've not been as impressed with the HTC devices I've tried as you have.

Whats with all the confusion? You don't seriously think the iphone has good battery life? or decent sound quality? the lack of autofocus isnt a subjective opinion either, its a fact thats not doing apple any good.

As for battery, i've been laughing at every ipod ever released in terms of battery life; they have some of most dreadful battery life times of any product out there. the iPhone is no different. anyone remember the second generation ipod? apple rated its battery as 'over 8 hours' LMAO, how vague. Apple is still having trouble getting some decent battery life out of their players, took them far too many years to get over the 30 hours battery life mark, when other companies were getting over 50! Cowon S9 does up to 55. Anyway, I own a Nokia E71, the presence of a real tactile keyboard is the main reason why I bought it. I dont understand how americans are so in love with the iPhone, 1/3 of the country is obese, i cant imagine those fat fingers being accurate when writing messages.

not every deal is about money google is proof of this they purchased youtube which looses them millions every year, and they may have purchased admob just to get economics on the app store market.

well part of the reason apples battery life is not as good as other competition is because there mp3 players are not 1inch thick bricks of crap, i myself find my ipod nanos battery to be fine, i have to agree about the iphone though i cant get through 10 hours of texting web browsing and using apps without the thing dieing. But if you look at other smart phone competition they are not much better.

They bought youtube to make money, too, not lose it. (not "loose.") They also intend to make money from admob. They make money by selling ads. That is what google does. Sometimes, particularly on the internet, you have to lose money at first in order to make money later. You don't want to enter the market after there's already an entrenched leader.

Every deal is about money. Corporations have a legal fiduciary duty to make money for their stockholders. Even if the deal doesn't make immediate cash, you can bet the only reason the deal is made because long term they expect to make more money than if they didn't make the deal.
