Has anybody else actually sat down and read Ballmer's entire memo to his employees? What an exercise in corporate-speak. He uses the word "incredible" six times. Perhaps he feels the need to use it so often because Microsoft has a credibility problem.

You also have to like the way he is planning on addressing the "lingering doubts" about Vista -- with a massive advertising campaign. It's bad enough that he's got to acknowledge that his customers have doubts about the company's most important product. But his solution is pure Microsoft -- instead of removing those "lingering doubts" by actually make the product better, he hoping people won't notice if they market the thing ever harder.

My understanding about Ballmer is this. He is the type who could power New York with his super high energy output. I think someone even called him the biggest spaz to hit the corporate world. I wish I could remember where I heard that.

As a loyal Apple devotee who's always dissed Microsoft, but who is also severely dissapointed in Apple lately (MobileMe disaster, 2.0 firmware bugginess, etc.), I'm looking forward to what MS has to offer in the future. I hope they can start kicking some ass, and force Apple to really get on their "A" game again.

Very, very well said.. I have to agree...

Yeah, Apple and Microsoft need each other to be at their best, much like a good superhero needs a good villain.

Each should continue trying to out-innovate the other, and ultimately the world wins.

Same point but said much more simply.. :)

You have just helped me with a mystery. I could not remember Circus Ponies to save my life. Many thanks as my brain was about to fry.. :)

I think the only reason why I remember it, is because of its funny name. like Omnigraffle. Who would have thought of that for a flowcharting, graphical program? Visio as a name, ok I can see that as it relates to visual representation. Visio, Visual. ok Omnigraffle  but hey, makes you remember it and that is what marketing is all about....

So your saying that Microsoft HAS provided the user experience people desire, even when their very own C.E.O. is admitting that they have not??? Ok then
When? He said he wants to provide a experience with no compromises. That's not the same as saying "we haven't provided the user experience people desire", but it is saying "we can do better". Apparently, people already desire it, as they are buying millions and millions of PCs every year. Ballmer is saying they can do a better job, which is something I agree with.

Ya surface is just a wonderful implementation that everyone is bound to replace their coffee tables with lol. The fact is, implementing Multi-Touch hardware and user-experience standards is not going to be an easy task accross the industry. Hence the reason that there are already organizations seeking to monitor and establish standards in that arena.
Microsoft is not alone in accomplishing this task. This is not Apple we're talking about. Dell, HP, and numerous others are all seeking to implement multi-touch together. Microsoft is just responsible for the Software, but wants to make sure there is better synergy between the products.

We are talking about an entirely new way to interact with a computer and all of the software on it, native and 3rd party. There is a lot more to it then just popping in a touch screen.
So very true.

Is it so hard to admit that people and companies might seek other alternatives because they are not satisfied with what Microsoft is offering? Gee, why did Google make ANDROID? I just don't get it because there is no room for it since Windows Mobile is such a stellar product. Wow!
It isn't hard at all. I just don't know why you think Android is in response to Microsoft's offerings. Google wants Android to be an open-source project so that it can marshall the open-source community's ideas and let its partners put their own stamp on the software. Microsoft is a competitor, yes, but so is every other smart phone maker, including Apple. Where your getting it wrong is assuming every competitor is made in spite of Microsoft's success.

He can power NY with his energy.

I was a computer salesmen who attended a Windows launch in NY. Ballmer gave the presentation. I was already a die hard Mac user by then and walked out of the launch so jazzed to go out and sell Windows; it was scary.

What it does prove is that Apple can be just a ***** as Microsoft. Just look as the past 2 weeks. Apple have shown themselves to be just as incompetent with new hardware and software releases.

Good point. However, it did not take one year and a service pack to fix.... wait am I speaking too soon?

Or maybe he likes the world "incredible"? What's wrong with that?

Who's to say they can't do both? By far and large, the biggest problems with Vista have been solved. The only obstacle now is telling people that.

I heard it here. Just today. ;)

So what did you do to detox?

Do you happen to remember the Packard Bell computers? Shutter......

 yes, I told my mom she needed to upgrade (5 years ago she was still running Windows 3.11). I told her, when she was ready I would help her get a good one. Instead she went out and bought the cheapest and first Packard Bell she could find. then she called me every day for support..... She since trashed that and I think she now has an e-machines or was it compaq. Anyway another computer she bought on her own that she only boots up once a month. I told her "Mom, as much as I love you - I really cannot support your computer anymore. I do not come up here from NC to visit, just to work on your computer for 2 days. Next time let me pick the computer for you" Sad part is I think she got ripped for over $1000 for what little she has (each time).

But then again, we are talking about a woman who in 1988 walks onto a Hyundai lot (when Hyundai's were jokes) and said I'll take that one. The sales man said "That one is sold." so she turns around and says "I'll take that one." When the sales man asked if she wanted to take it for a test drive, she said "Why? it's brand new, what could be wrong with it?" She did not negotiate or anything - ended up paying the full $13,000 in price.

the next week, my friend bought a similar model for under $10,000.

Not much, except it confirms my suspicion that the man is devoid of imagination or originality.

Who's to say they ever have? The fact is, Vista was not well received for any number of reasons, which Microsoft can't fix unless they can deliver on the promises they made for Vista years ago.

This may be a difficult task since the drums of war was playing pretty hard before the release of Vista. Then after it hit the market, silence. It's a tough PR job to turn that around.

Balmer has never struck me as a technology guy.

Heh, good thing Apple didn't listen to those whiners! Nice post BTW.
So true. I know many who doomed Apple for introducing the iPod. They said it would be the end of Apple.

This is my thought too.

"The Wow is Now!" has turned into "Wow, This Took Five Years?".

After so much time and hype, people expected something revolutionary. What they got was something barely evolutionary.

Not really... The public doesnt know the "promises" made... All they have to so is fix the problems (which they argueably did) and let the public know they did (which they are doing soon) I'd say they are on track.

Well said.

Edit:

Old --> I've noticed some of my hard core PC using friends equating Vista with Me.

New --> I've noticed some of my hard core PC using friends equating Windows Vista with Windows Me.

Or more like the average person does not remember the promises made, since it has been almost 2 years. This was touted as the long awaited longhorn - which it isn't as they had to rip out so much due to lawsuits and then it was delayed due to the trade commission saying it did not live up to computing standards. They are hoping the new Windows 7 is the long awaited longhorn that vista was supposed to be - their "promised child".

Personally I think Vista is the "here give em something" like Millenium was between the time of NT and XP. 2000 was the server or corporate version of that era like NT was, while the consumer had 95 or 98. Millenium was a rush out the door like Vista is.

I think Windows 7 (if done correctly) could be like XP.

And yes, if MS fixes the problems - then most the public will be satisfied. Even if still does fall short of what the original intent was. It is a holding pattern...

Although, I do like how Apple is going to redesign the best to make it better before working on the new. I just hope Apple does it right and it does not bite them as they already stated "little to no new features".

Nice drivel. Now show something of value and back it up.

Show me the Microsoft Mobile platform that does what the iPhone produces.

Microsoft was so damn good at their own Windows CE platform that they didn't even build it for nearly a decade and had a third party work on it.

They then took back that contract just when it was clear that they'd better take the mobile platform serious for cellphones and step up and do something with it.

Research BSquare Inc.

Having worked as a contractor for another company BSquare bought I got to see the inner working of BSquare and found them nothing more than a hack, but I did feel for them as Microsoft's nearly $50 Million yearly contract got stolen from them without nearly a thank you for making our platform perform [albeit hackneyed] for several years, but now we are taking it back because it's now worthy of our attention.
