Nice drivel. Now show something of value and back it up.

Show me the Microsoft Mobile platform that does what the iPhone produces.

Microsoft was so damn good at their own Windows CE platform that they didn't even build it for nearly a decade and had a third party work on it.

They then took back that contract just when it was clear that they'd better take the mobile platform serious for cellphones and step up and do something with it.

Research BSquare Inc.

Having worked as a contractor for another company BSquare bought I got to see the inner working of BSquare and found them nothing more than a hack, but I did feel for them as Microsoft's nearly $50 Million yearly contract got stolen from them without nearly a thank you for making our platform perform [albeit hackneyed] for several years, but now we are taking it back because it's now worthy of our attention.

Does Microsoft do anything other than copy Apple?

A Zune phone? expected be a hit amongst the 107 Zune owners in the world?

Perhaps Microsoft should try doing something original, and if they can't be original, at least do a better job of what they are already doing.

I don't know if Microsoft is going to go anywhere with Balmer, he doesn't seem to have any vision, other than to continue copying Apple.

Not really... The public doesnt know the "promises" made... All they have to so is fix the problems (which they argueably did) and let the public know they did (which they are doing soon) I'd say they are on track.

No, I think they need to make a compelling case for why anybody would want it. This they have failed to do.

Ignore

How can I ignore / block out some of the people posting in these forums?

Thanks in advance.

Microsoft don't outsell Apple 30-1. Apple currently have a 4% worldwide share, meaning that even if every piece of PC hardware sold is running Microsoft (which it isn't) the maximum ratio is 24-1.

What are they outselling on? The operating system? Apple makes computers. Apple is outselling Microsoft on computers infinity to zero. I've never seen a Microsoft branded computer.

Apple keeps outpacing themselves. I think Linux will begin to fill the lower end of the void with Apple at the upper, further squeezing Microsoft into a tight mid-range box. I hope Microsoft comes up with some good stuff though, but I doubt it. Apple has enjoyed too much growth lately and needs a reality check. Their quality hasn't been up to par lately.

Which is where the advertising campaign comes in...

Ok, where does it say anything about a Zune phone? He wants to provide a more end-to-end experience in the phone, but I'd say its more reasonable to think their making hardware for a WinMo phone. How that is copying Apple (who's phone has been out all of 1 year), please explain.

Apple makes computers, but Apple also makes Mac OS X. He's comparing Mac OS X to Windows, since obviously Microsoft doesn't make PC hardware. Therefore, Microsoft is outselling Apple 30-1 (or whatever number). Its not that hard to comprehend.

I'm sorry, Linux isn't going to fill any void, let alone "squeeze" Microsoft into anything. Mac OS X is the competition to Microsoft, but so far has managed to grab only ~4% market share worldwide. Don't you think its a bit... foolish to speculate on who is squeezing who?

When? He said he wants to provide a experience with no compromises. That's not the same as saying "we haven't provided the user experience people desire", but it is saying "we can do better". Apparently, people already desire it, as they are buying millions and millions of PCs every year. Ballmer is saying they can do a better job, which is something I agree with.

Microsoft is not alone in accomplishing this task. This is not Apple we're talking about. Dell, HP, and numerous others are all seeking to implement multi-touch together. Microsoft is just responsible for the Software, but wants to make sure there is better synergy between the products.

So very true.

It isn't hard at all. I just don't know why you think Android is in response to Microsoft's offerings. Google wants Android to be an open-source project so that it can marshall the open-source community's ideas and let its partners put their own stamp on the software. Microsoft is a competitor, yes, but so is every other smart phone maker, including Apple. Where your getting it wrong is assuming every competitor is made in spite of Microsoft's success.

Lol ok. We are basically saying the same thing but misunderstanding each other I think.

Take a look at this...Window XP Users Actually Love Vista... If They Think Its Something Else

This is exactly why the advertising campaign is a good thing for Microsoft.
There are a lot of folks out there who follow others for sure.

Advertising will help convince the sheep.

Personally, I've tried Vista. It's okay. At this time, XP is a much more mature OS that runs on less capable hardware. In the office environment, I've seldom heard let's upgrade to Vista. Yet, most want Office 2007 instead of Office 2003, and Office 2007 will run on XP just fine.

I think you severely underestimate Gil Amelio. He came to Apple when Apple was in big, big trouble. He and Ellen Hancock are responsible for Apple _not_ going down the toilet. Amelio was responsible for Steve Jobs returning to Apple, and he was responsible for there being something to return to. And he set himself up to be thrown out, leaving in what was the best possible way for Apple - not for him.

Well, I will retract my statements about Amelio. What I will say is that he was not the right kind of leader for Apple (but that's not really his fault either), but then credit must be given to him for bringing SJ back.

Actually, many would probably regard Spindler as perhaps the worst Apple CEO.

Advertising will help convince the sheep.

Exactly... And isn't that the point of all advertising campaigns? (Think Mac vs PC)

Advertising to "convince the sheep?" That must be all those "other people." Present company excluded, of course.

I personally have no real opinion about Vista, having not used it enough to feel entitled to one. What I do know is that Microsoft has over-promised with Vista, and it's something they do often enough such that even "the sheep" catch on eventually. Buyers of new Windows PCs won't have a choice, but current PC owners will evaluate whether upgrading is worthwhile. Microsoft hasn't made a good case for it, and I'm not talking strictly about not advertising enough. To start with, they created an impossibly complicated number of versions, an error that no amount of advertising will really fix.

Same here. I don't get the separate versions either.

Home Premium
Basic
Business
Ultimate

Every version should be "Ultimate", instead of intentionally excluding certain features to make different versions. Although I did read an article that Walmart wanted Microsoft to kill Basic, because its a non-seller... That should be a hint, Microsoft!

Mimic - that about sums it up.

Yep. I can't think of any company that wouldn't want to mimic Apple's success. But then again, I can't think of any company that wouldn't want to mimic Microsoft's success, either. What's wrong with that?

Microsoft's success came from a complete lack of ethics. While companies were trying to compete on a level and ethical playing field, Microsoft was dirty dealing them, stealing their work, poisoning business relationships, intentionally disrupting their businesses, etc. Microsoft leadership wisely perceived that the vast majority of business owners and others, at the time, had little clue of what would be good or bad in computing equipment generally, or operating systems, software, or application design and features. The key was to get something out there fast, market it as if it were good, and make sure it was installed by default on all of the cheapest computers available. Only the 0.01% computer or software experts out there would be yearning for the substantially greater quality and simplicity that could have been, if only there had been a sophisticated market to begin with. This, however, has been changing substantially during the 21st Century. Good to see MS realizing this.

Ballmer has hit the nail on the head - the end to end experience is exactly why I have a mac.

And exactly why I'll never have a Zune Phone!
