If you have other issues then exchange, but be aware you may 'fix' one issue and get another machine with other issues. Such as a louder HD, debris under the glass (dust etc), flickering, dead pixels, backlight bleed in one of the corners etc.. all these things are possible so you just have to decide if the issue you have is worth rolling the dice on another unit. You could easily end up with a perfect unit, but some people have gone through 3-4 returns to find this, and conversely some people have gone through 3-4 returns and still had issues.

Honestly, I'm shocked.... Why does buying a 2000 euro machine feel like playing a gambling game ? Why do all Apple products go thru all these problems ?
It reminds me when I bought my aluminium Powerbook, I had so many issues with the damn display (white spots, uneven illumination, flickering, weird crap behind the display...). I think I sent that unit like 5-6 times to Apple in 1-2 months. In the end I got a good machine, but....what a pain was that...

also, i bet most people who say they have a 'perfect' screen are either in denial or don't notice the imperfections. I've had 3 brand new ones shipped to me and they've all had varying levels of screen issues and other flaws. It's just a matter of what you're willing to accept.

So are you keeping machine number 3?

What you have touched on is why i am probably sticking with my second replacement as it was an improvement on the first. I could roll the dice and the third might be worse than my second (which is pretty good minus a few niggles).

I don't want to get to 3, 4, or maybe a 5th replacement because the process of returning and waiting in for the next delivery is too disruptive. Plus if i returned the second and the third was worse i would probably be furious with myself.

Looks like I had no luck with my 27" iMac. I got it just 4 days ago and I will call Apples support tomorrow...
I have chosen the option for a replacement display and I'm satisfied with the result. Looks very much better:

i think i will keep # 2. It has minimal screen issues. The only other things that bother me is it runs pretty hot compared to the other two and it makes a bit of a 'humming' sound intermittently that you can hear when the room is quiet. Other than that it's acceptable. I don't want to go through the hassle of trying a fourth machine, enough is enough. Number 1 and 3 had very bad yellow tinting. Plus the 3rd one had a big black dot under the screen.

That sound comes from the harddrive. What drive does #2 have built in and which one is in #1 and #3?
I got that sound, too. My iMac has a WD1001FALS. I guess the screws that hold the harddrive were tightened a bit too hard. This caused the same phenomenon with my old white iMac, too.
I also recognized the heat coming from my iMac, especially the upper part of the back gets hot.
AFAIK that's all normal.

imac 1 was completely silent, it had the seagate, number 2 has the WD where the hd is audible but also has the slight humming/buzzing sound intermittently. When I move the angle of the screen you can either make it go away or produce the sound. Number 3 also had the WD which you could hear but didn't have the humming/buzzing sound at all. Every unit is different.

What do people make of these on the imac good/bad scale?

This is my second replacement. It actually looks better than the first which had red tint on the whole left side of the screen. Rest of the machine is perfect so in two minds about it. Number three might be worse or the same...

Also compared it side by side with my 24inch Dell 2407WFP and it looks much whiter than that in general so...

not just for apples...

First, how bad can the problem be if you need someone else to tell you if you can see it ?!

I decided to try this test on my 24" Acer monitor (still waiting on my 27" iMac) that I have been using for over 2 years. Guess what? Yellowing! And I never noticed it before this test.

I think people should try this test out on their other monitors (work etc) before going crazy on the return issue. I'm sure there are mac's with serious yellowing issues, but I suspect this problem has been WAY overblown by folks looking for a problem. I don't think this is an apple specific problem!

For what it's worth, here's my screen shot. Since I'm out of the 14 day replacement window, I'll have to have a screen replacement if I wish to pursue this issue.

I notice yellowing at the bottom of the screen, and a spot of red near top center. Having come from a NEC LCD3090 monitor that costs about $2200, I don't know what should be acceptable for Apple iMac screens.

Is it worth pursuing a screen replacement in hope of getting a better screen, or should I accept what I have and live with it? I know this decision is mine, but what are the odds that I'll get a better screen?

I made the decision that if I couldn't return I'd live with it. My screen replacement on a Mbp was a disaster and way worse...but it was a full case replacement..and honestly, I doubt highly it wasn't a screen pulled from another service call (it may have been an honest mixup).

So how are you doing "living with it?" Are you adjusting to a less than ideal screen?

ok the conclusion here is most will keep their iMac number 3 or 4 if the yellowing isn't to bad ,because they got fustrated with returning iMac's , no problem there ,but most times that little yellow gets worse over time , still no problem as most will get used to that too , but what about impact on resale value

i mean i would not like to get a used yellow tinted iMac and certainly would not bid on one ,or the iMac needs to be really cheap so i can get a new display for it ...so if you are honest the resale value drops to zero for the new iMac's as the yellow tint is a defect and like any defect it wil cut a big percentage of the resale value as relacing the display cost money

Has anyone had a positive experience with a screen replacement?

I completely satisfied with my replacement iMac. My first was awful...very noticeable and AppleCare was great replacing it. Was leary waiting for the replacement bit after using it for several weeks and checking the screen many times...it's a good one! I posted pics on page one of this thread. If you have a yellow tinged screen...it is unacceptable and should be replaced. There are some users who have received more than one yellow screen, but there are good ones out there.

Also, when viewing the screen make sure you are sitting back, around 2 feet and are perpendicular to the screen. If you take a picture, do the same and be sure to use a smaller aperture (ie f8 - f18).

Good luck, bottom line if it's yellow you deserve a perfect screen.

Just for the stat:

I bought it yesterday, base 2011 model imac 27 mc813. I was at two stores and tested 3 imacs, this one was the best overall. Also I have some dot under glass (not a dead pixel or dust) + grey bar at the bottom, almost unnoticeable.

I saw this bar on 3 imacs 2011 and one 2010 year model. It seems some backlight defect or kind of.
