Time for Apple to give users a choice of carrier.

If this continues more than a couple days, I wonder if Apple will have a way out of this contract they have with AT&T. They really have to make a CDMA version to get into the Enterprise in the US. Piloting the AT&T network (not just the iPhone) has been a absolute disaster.

I experienced the same problem at around 3am on monday morning on the O2 network (UK). There was no service for around 15 minutes. I tried turning off and on and a hard reset and nothing worked, so it was just the network.

Is it probable that maybe the networks are changing stuff behind the scenes in preparation for iPhone updates or anything like that?

Weird, I'm getting two different error messages in Safari.

Oh and:
They told me it would be fixed by noon, so when it's still down by then (I'm fairly certain it will be) I will call in the afternoon and demand a credit.

I'm on the phone with Apple support right now. The guy told me that "AT&T was upgrading their towers this morning and had to take down the data network in order to do so". When I asked him for an ETA of when it would be up he said his system only says "Sometime today".

safari server

seriously how stupid do they think people are. ... oh yeah i forgot that apple has the entire internet on their one server....

if they keep this up they are going to be at the wrong end of a huge class action lawsuit... could you imagine if we had a choice of providers for the iphone, this crap wouldn't happen

just spent all D8MN morning on the phone with Apple and AT&T and neither is taking responsibility... Apple says AT&T is having data issues.
AT&T says that Apple's safari server has gone down and there is nothing they can do.
This is just getting ridiculous.
I'm on the phone now to see if I can get my early termination fee waived and get out of my contract.

lol. I love how crazy people are when data goes down for a few hours. Just deal. It's not just you. I would like to know HOW you expect ATT or Apple to fix this issue "for you" and not the other millions of people experiencing the same thing? IMO, it's your fault for calling and trying to get this resolved if you knew it was a widespread problem.

Sprint, Verizon, TMobile have never had network issues?

Here's the logical solution. Wait until the data goes back up, call and complain, get refunded + something else (free month?).

Anybody else burning through their battery today? Mine is down to ~30% in 4 hours.

I'm burning through mine at a pretty good pace too.

I'm in Columbia, MO and can confirm both 3G and EDGE are out. It's 10:40am here now.

Guy, I told you it was the network. AT&T is probably doing an update on their network to fix the iPhone issues.

/waits for Vandozza to flame me once again.

BTW. If your data is out, save your battery by turning off "push" for now.

But if people keep calling it keeps the problem at the front of the pile of other issues that I'm sure they're having. I had text messaging problems with my old Blackberry on Nextel. They had a national outage on texting that may still be an ongoing issue... They ended up giving my phone a new IP address among other fixes and a few credits to my bill.

I just hope that this problem doesn't turn into that all over again...

So if I can summarize on the excuses given by AT&T CSR's today:

Hurricane Gustav
Apple's 'Safari Server' is down
AT&T upgrading their towers
The network is just 'really slow'
We're 'having problems'

Did I miss any?

odd...i think it's working...just got some emails through, and the weather widget works now...this is in northern va....

Hey all,

I've had no data all morning. Both on 3G and EDGE, neither worked.

I'm sitting at my desk and my phone just vibrated. I took a quick look, and sure enough data seems to be back up for the Boston, MA area. I'm currently at work in Burlington, MA and I just got a few emails on my phone.
