Sitting here today, the laptop is running warm which I can only put down to the fact I've got a Windows 11 VM running in addition to a number of normal productivity apps. Windows 11 isn't doing any updates and is actually just running some telnet, SSH and web browsers, so I'm surprised its running so warm.

Has anybody else noticed this behaviour?

The only thing I've had running which has made it warm like this before was Football Manager during a match.

Interesting. I would try to use some other demanding apps and compare. Lisa from MobileTechreview, says that she used several apps without it overheating. You may want to watch that and duplicate what she used for reference.
But I would think it's the virtual machine.

note: I would try avoid a return. Also, we can get the idea in our (paranoid?) heads that they messed up the thermal grease and then obsess over re-applying it, and such things as that. Best to avoid that :D

I don’t have my M2 MBA yet but yesterday I was playing around with VirtualBuddy on my M1 MBA and for the first time that I can remember, my battery dropped to under 35% after about 9 hours. Normally I would be well over 50%.

Basically, virtualization seems to take a relatively large amount of resources and I’m sure Parallels is similar.

I noticed the rather substantial rubber feet on the bottom. They offer some height. I would think would enable air to get under there. My Pro has them also. Not sure if the Air sits higher.

a Windows 11 VM running

Still going to be doing a lot just to run itself before considering apps inside it. It will consume resources continually which is probably causing the heat. I run VMs on my devices but I wouldn't expect a fanless device to stay cool doing it.

Its been so long since I've run one on a fanless device to be honest....

Any of you guys experiencing this scuffed issue reported by 9to5mac?

In the days leading up to preorder, I had a midnight config saved to my account. Ready to roll. The night before the presale, I added the starlight config to my account, just in case. The next morning, I woke and preordered the starlight. Sometimes, I get it right. 😏

I've been careful with my midnight and can say I'm starting to see scuffing around the USB port , love the midnight but I reckon after I while it could look not to great so Im now considering getting a silver model.

Many people have been using black/midnight/other dark color iPhones for a long time. I have a midnight 13 mini and its aluminum lightning port does not have any scuffs. Do we expect the laptop be any different?

are there any impression out there of people doing moderately intensive work like 4K video editing on the 256 GB model? I'm in the camp that people are WAY overreacting to the "slow" SSD issue and want to see if there are any hands-on impressions of people using that "slow" model and what their experience is like.

I think its because the lightning port is different to the usb c port . you have this small chamfered edge on the iPhones with the lighting port . on the Macs it isn't the case maybe that's why its different

I don't see a chamfered edge on my 13 mini. It looks like plain aluminum all the way to the edge of the hole, just like USB-C ports look on my MBA.

This is actually a great point that I hadn't thought of before. I'm pretty sure the midnight on the aluminum sides of the iPhone Mini is the same (or at least extremely similar) to the midnight on the MBA. Same material too. My midnight iPhone doesn't have any scuffs anywhere on it despite it going in and out of pockets dozens of times and day, and despite me just non being as "careful" with it as I would ever be with a laptop. I've even dropped it a couple times. There's no scuffs around the lighting port either...but that's probably because I mostly use MagSafe, but I plan to mostly use MagSafe on the Air too.

Now I feel way more comfortable with probable durability of the midnight color on the Air...

Is anyone else's MagSafe connector slightly scratched (on the MacBook, not the cable)? I'm too lazy to change the computer either way, but I'll post a pic later.

@ turbineseaplane

Thanks

I don’t understand why they didn’t use this for the MacBooks usb c ports . I have a iPhone 7 in Matt black and I think it’s because of the chamfered edge the black finish is unmarked around the charging port

How did you exactly test that?
I tried them both (MBA M2 and M1) on the table using the method I described earlier in this thread and it was noticeable difference for me in those two units I tried. I think if you just hold them in your hands trying to determine something like that it is pretty impossible to notice and also big risk that you actually damage them.

I have thoroughly flexed and looked closely at both, there is no difference in my view when it comes to overall flex and strength. The only way either is going to get damaged is stress that no machine should expect to be put under intentionally.
