Like anything , it's got pros and cons , overall the echo is a winner for me. I have an elderly grandmother who cannot use computers of any sort, the echo and echo show are game changes for communication purposes with her family. I'll just buy echo dots and post them globally around the world so they can just communicate , for me this is massive , just by saying "call x"

I just can' t grasp why apple has to make standalone Siri speaker with a (small) screen, while all their idevices also have a screen and microphones, it is just not apple's way. There must be more to it.
They could make a dedicated system/speaker with already advanced microphones, but can also combine your voiceinput from the microphones of all your i devices, to improve the understanding of voice commands , and a very fast router with the latest and fastest wifi you can get, so it can push screen content very fast/instantly to your iphone/ipad/whatever.
It is also possible that the speaker will also be an Apple TV or have a dedicated connection to an Apple TV, so the big screen will become your display.
And perhaps you can set preferences , so you can choose, which display is your favorite for displaying content, or you can choose to let the system decide by tracking which device is closest to you or on which device you are currently working.

But there is more to it than just a speaker with a screen, like amazon, i don' t need the speaker to have a big screen for FaceTime or displaying YouTube, i already have an ipad for that.

I recall you saying in a previous post how An active display would benefit your grandmother/smart speaker capabilities. That's a good point and active display would be more suitable for somebody that would appreciate having a visual versus just having audible feedback.

But does that grandmother already have an iPhone/iphone or another smartphone, and does she now how she can use those devices? Because, if she can and already has one of these devices, she doesn' t need a build in screen.

If she doesn' t have a smartphone and doesn' t now how to use it. I would not bother on getting her a Siri speaker...

Apple has primarily strayed away from releasing hardware during WWDC. Last year, It was actually rumored that the second generation Apple Watch was going to launch during WWDC and that never happened. So I question the validity of this rumor at all, being that the developer conference is primarily the main focus.

I was one of the people hoping for the watch. Had to wait 3 more months for it! I don't mind the software focus.

Not really, esp. the 12.9". If anyting it's best suited for pros in the graphics, photo editing, and related fields. It's a poor choice as a consumer device.

The 12.9" would be a great size for consumption as more and more people use second screens to watch video on demand etc. I'd love a lower priced ipad but with a large screen like a portable TV.

Its a little frustrating that they force you into 'pro' pricing territory just for screen size - if you don't need a pencil or any of the other stuff too bad. Hopefully they'll do something like they did for the recent 'ipad' refresh where they do a more affordable version. Although no laminated screen sucks.

Apple's first step, before even thinking hardware is to improve Siri. Unless that is corrected , the experience will be poor.

As I stated in a previous post, it can't even tell me the weather at present . It's either temperature range or when I ask for "now" the reponce is "windy"...... wtf....

The echo dot : it's 17 degrees in London now , with a low....high etc....

Which do I use on a daily basis .... echo ... once you have both you realise how poor Siri is. Though it's a personal choice, for some siri is great, for me , it's Alexa at home and I don't use any voice AI when about, though that's cause I've given up on Siri , which is not a bad thing , less interaction with my phone constantly .

I also don't want a price bump. They already had a horrible price hike for the 9.7" pro which was IMO unjustifed (cost of goods not a big increase, and they sell highly profitable accessories like the smart keyboard and pencil). They can't do another $100 just for less than an inch more screen size.

And we don' t know if there will be a lot of other new features and what are the specs, to justify a higher price, yet...

Prominent KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a "2017 WWDC highlights" report, outlining his expectations for next month's keynote event. While he expects the typical previews of the next versions of iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, he also predicts we will see several hardware-related announcements.

WWDC-2017-website.jpg

One major debut Kuo expects to see is the long-rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which he says has a greater than 70 percent chance of debuting at the event based on the timing of production ramp-up, which he sees as happening at the end of the current quarter. In line with previous rumors, Kuo believes the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will have a similar form factor as the current 9.7-inch model, squeezing in a larger display thanks to narrower bezels.Kuo also reiterates his belief that there is a greater than 50 percent chance Apple will unveil its Siri smart speaker at WWDC. He previously said that the speaker may not actually launch until later in the year, but an announcement at WWDC would give developers time to begin building support for the product. For the first time, Kuo says Apple's speaker will include a touch panel display, a detail that has remained unclear since rumors began. Most previous rumors have made no mention of whether the product will include a display, but Phil Schiller recently suggested such smart speaker products would benefit from the inclusion of a screen.

Apple's WWDC keynote kicks off at 10:00 am Pacific Time on Monday, June 5, and MacRumors will have full coverage of the event as it unfolds.

[doublepost=1494761004][/doublepost]I still have the IPad ll and I have been waiting for the 10.5 model to be announced. Think Apple has to do something soon because the Surface is getting great reviews and Apple needs to stay competitive plus Apple needs to stick to two sizes for the IPad. Gets too confusing with all these different sizes. I wish the new IPad would have a micro SD slot for memory because as a photographer I could shoot into the Ipad on location with an Eyfi wireless card.

"but Phil Schiller recently suggested such smart speaker products would benefit from the inclusion of a screen."

That doesn't back up anything concrete though.... A rumor making questionable another unclear rumor...

I'd rather a rumors backing up a solid one personally :)

Phil mentioning this doesn't mean anything either.. All it does mean is that they would be thinking about it.

I do believe the 10.5" iPad Pro... Apple's got us now..

so if ming is correct my guess is an iOS Pro that has more desktop class features that comes only on the iPad Pro. If that is correct WWDC would be the place to show off using a new iPad Pro running iOS Pro.

This also helps in another way, because the iPads ease of use that a lot of non tech people enjoy such as my grandparents is not effected as the normal iPad will still have iOS as we know it today.

Think beyond yourself. Unless you are single living alone, how do the other people you live with get to use your alternative solution when that iPad is out of the house with you? So many of us seem confused regarding the utility of these as stationary devices vs. our mobile devices. Yes, you can replicate the functionality pretty well with your mobile devices but mobile devices leave the house with you. Those left behind may want to use the benefits of such a product when you are not home.

It's the same with suggestions of using our mobile devices as THE :apple:TV remote. Great if you are single living alone. But imagine the traditional remote being taken out of the house with you as much as you take your mobile device out of the house. The rest of the family wants to watch some television and you took the "good remote" on the road.

If one is single living alone, maybe this product isn't for you... just as maybe the Watch isn't for some... maybe a desktop Mac isn't for some... maybe a Mac laptop isn't for some... maybe a tablet isn't for some. However, there are an awful lot of people that do NOT live alone. And currently there are lot of those people with at least one roommate owning an Apple iDevice but they still buy this kind of product... and love it. Conceptually, they may not NEED one of these... but they may also not NEED a Watch, a Mac, a tablet or even an iPhone.

People buy what they buy because it serves their purposes. If this can't serve your home's purpose, don't buy. But if you want some rationale for why Apple might make one, hopefully that paints a picture for you. Mobile devices are mobile- they leave homes with their owners. These devices are generally stationary, ready to serve anyone left back at home when you and your mobile device are out and about. They are relatively cheap, work pretty well and- in my own experience- people seem to really like them (even the otherwise Apple people I know).

Look through this thread and recent other threads on this topic and you won't find many Apple people slinging big hate at these devices if they've purchased them for their own home. How atypical is that? When the Apple passionate don't have a lot of non-Apple product hate to spew, you have to think there's probably something there for an Apple version of the same product. After all, "we" are the same people who bashed bigger screen phones to no end, blasted NFC payments as a gimmick and on and on... right up until Apple adopted bigger screen phones and rolled out Apple pay, etc. With this kind of product, those of us that have purchased them generally praise them... even though the ones that were purchased are not branded with an Apple. I suggest that means there's a real opportunity for an Apple version of the same.

I've wanted this for years. If they really are showing a new iPad at WWDC there is some hope of something more for the iPad than just blown up phone OS.

But it's been disappointing for so long, I highly doubt at this stage they'll do it.

I imagine that's by design and intentional. When I ask: "What is the weather in San Francisco now" the present temperature, sunny/cloudy/etc, and an hour hourly forecast is displayed. That's because my phone and Apple Watch have displays, and, more often than not I'd like to know how the temperature/condition may change in the next few hours.

With a speaker only system it would be trivial to announce that information (or a subset).

EDIT: If I ask a more specific question: "What's the temperature in San Francisco?" Siri will announce the temperature and display that with a 12 hour forecast on the screen. Seems reasonable.

The screen is to supplement touch input and text output until Apple can improve Siri's voice processing and AI capabilities.

Ming-Chi is very reliable.

Just my $0.02, good old Ming has his good days and bad days. For example, he nailed Apple bringing the iPad 4 back into production to replace the iPad 2 as the low model. But he's been spectacularly wrong a several occasions.

On the whole I think he is probably the best analyst out there in predicting Apples product decisions. So I'm always interested to read about his predictions.

(P.S. this is a concept sketch I made years ago, the cheeky mouse-pad/screen protector is not needed on counter-top only models, only on more "transportable" units. Also, the bezels need not be nearly so large!).

large
This is an interesting concept. However I don't see it as a complete product but rather as a case for the larger iPad Pro. Add a SD card reader and a compartment to store the pencil, and you'll have a robust conversion kit to transform the iPad in a (almost) computer.

hmmm will be interesting to see what they call the new 10.5 inch iPad. Seems weird that they're presumably introducing a new size to the line before they update the 12.9 even though the 12.9 is what NEEDS an update and not the 9.7. Maybe they're replacing the 12.9 line with the 10.5?
If they replace the 12.9" with a 10.5" I know a lot of customers who like the larger screen are going to be extremely pissed off.
[doublepost=1494780843][/doublepost]
So They're killing 7.9 inch iPads and adding another 10.5" model because both 9.7" and 12.9" models aren't enough ? .......wtf ?
The 10.5" is meant to replace the 9.7"

But does that grandmother already have an iPhone/iphone or another smartphone, and does she now how she can use those devices? Because, if she can and already has one of these devices, she doesn' t need a build in screen.

If she doesn' t have a smartphone and doesn' t now how to use it. I would not bother on getting her a Siri speaker...

You're speaking for his grandmother? Why don't you ask the OP, not me. In any case, that doesn't mean having a display wouldn't benefit her in any form or another. The idea of a display is for text/touch input and output, all while having a visual. That might make all the difference in the world having physically something you can see versus what you hear. I don't think you took those factors into consideration for somebody who might be in a geriatric demographic.

A force touch iPad ..... maybe...? Anybody....?

You mean 3D Touch? It's a nice thought, but I don't think it will happen. Tim Cook quoted how difficult it was to manufacture 3D Touch into a smaller form factor with the iPhone. I personally like 3D Touch and I would use it if the iPad offered it, but I don't see this being a likely factor. It would be nice to have so you can create shortcuts with a larger display like the iPad.

You'll be surprised. Think of a device that can come with or without a screen with a base that you can set your iPhone/Ipad in to provide the screen(s) in whatever room you are in. This would charge your device and enable you to have multiple affordable screens. You are going to get in the base the speaker and microphones that will tie into the Next Gen Siri that has been under development with VocalIQ and other tremendous acquisitions, along with a router/mesh system. When you combine this with HomeKit, Apple will have another smash hit on their hands.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this new iPad. Is it going to have new features? Is it going to take advantage of the slightly larger screen space? Even the much larger Pro doesn't do this. The 9.7" pro is already a good sized screen. If anything they should eliminate the bezels of the current size iPad and create one that has a smaller form factor.

the point is you get a larger screen in the same physical size as the 9.7

Unless they use this as an opportunity to use the iPad as a platform for developing for iOS 11 and allow devs early access to the hardware?

a new bezel less ipad without iOS11 to be released? hard to believe
but i hope for the introduction of the new pencil support for the upcoming macOS and only force trackpad macs compatibility
