Really? Wait until we see the sales figures on just M1 Macs sold

I hope intel comes out with a RAW power chip that blows the M1 out of the water.

Well, even before the M1, Covid has spiked computer sales. So coupled with the rave reviews for M1 Macs, I think you will see a nice jump in Mac sales on the next earnings call.

Should stick to LED/LCD all round, not impressed with the OLED on the wife's iPhone 12 mini, nor was my friend on his son's one... Nothing against the tech, looks great on my current Samsung (and his Pixel 5) but not sure why Apple's are so bad, both colour and off-axis are well below par.
This is neither an article for OLED, nor for iPhones.

Apple is widely reported to be embracing mini-LED display backlighting technology for some products next year, and a new report today by DigiTimes has named several of Apple's partners in the supply chain that are expected to benefit from the switch.

According to the report, Apple is set to launch its first mini-LED iPad Pro in the first quarter of 2021 and mass produce mini-LED MacBook Pro models in the second quarter, and a number of Taiwan manufacturers are building a "pre-emptive presence" in the Mini-LED segment in anticipation.
The report goes on to note that among Apple's supply chain partners, TSMC will still benefit most from these devices, as the foundry has reportedly landed all the 5nm chip manufacturing orders for both Mini-LED iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models. Coupled with strong iPhone sales, 2021 is said to be looking good for TSMC, with first-quarter revenues likely to hit a new high, according to DigiTimes' sources.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, production will begin on mini-LED displays for the iPad Pro in the fourth quarter of 2020, with a launch expected in the first half of 2021. Apple is also believed to be working on new 16.1 and 14.1-inch MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays, which are expected to be released during the first half of 2021.

Mini-LED displays offer impressive wide color gamut performance, high contrast and HDR, and local dimming, and Kuo says adoption of the tech will "significantly improve productivity and the entertainment experience."

All future MacBook Pro models are expected to use Apple Silicon chips now that the first Apple Silicon Macs with M1 chip are available.

Guys, slightly off topic here, but why Apple cannot bring high budget games like COD warzone and GTA V to the Mac? I understand the developer's reasons behind not porting their games but still, Apple should do something about, especially when considering that Apple is one of the richest tech companies in the world. Now with the move to AS macs, despite the power and efficiency they bring, still, you get a machine that gives an "incomplete computing experience." Meaning that you get to use it for basic and productivity tasks, but definitely not high quality gaming, which sucks, especially when considering the prices people pay for these machines. My questions are:

- Does Apple care about big budget games?
- What would you do if you had to solve this issue?
- with the transition to AS, are mac users stuck with boring mobile games?
- Does that mean Pcs provide you with a complete computing experience (Basic tasks, Pro Tasks, and gaming) while Apple simply give you less than that?

P.S. Do not tell me macs are not for gaming or people who own macs do not care about gaming.

Why would it be m1.5? Apple has had same nanometer sized iPhone processor updates as full numbers, so I don’t see why m1 would be different. We will prob get m2 and then a m2x for the 16 inch and high end iMacs.
1/ new node = requires completely new chip design. I use m1.5 because if 5nm+ doesn’t have new design rules it’s just a shrunken m1 chip with better thermals/clock or a m1 chip that’s the same size with 1-2 more cores.

2/ 5nm+ Likely accepts same design as 5nm according to roadmap. It’s actually hard to know for sure Bc chip design and manufacturing is extremely NDA heavy

3/ Apple buys the latest fab process from tsmc every year, so q4 when 5nm+ is at full production it’s likely going to be in the new iPhones unless there is an issue with tsmc

4/ would Apple release a redesigned MacBook, without a new m1 chip? That’s why I wrote m1.5
You can call it m1x or whatever or m2 or whatever
My point is if Apple is going to be putting 5nm+ chips into new MacBooks they are likely iterative improvements based off what 5nm+ gives and not a real “redesign “ which costs WAY more money and even more effort

A true “M2” chip is probably coming past 5nm+

Bizarre that’s all I got to say
OLED continues to blow me away, I wonder if it can get any better it’s that awesome (especially Apple OLED)

Intel have been making processors for a long time, sure, but they haven't done anything noteworthy for a decade.

Apple, however, have worked incredibly hard. If Apples M1 chip encourages Intel to innovate again, I see it as a win for everyone, but I'm not holding my breath. Intel are so stagnant at this point, they can't find their way out of the sludge.

This reminds me of the leave Britney alone video...Intel is dead, move on. Their big business was really in server CPUs but with the investment of Amazon in their own ARM based server CPUs, RIP Intel.

You won’t see m1 sales figures as Apple simply shows Mac sales overall.

Main reason Apple released the M1 is because of performance issues and constant delays on Intel’s side. Intel is (was) the top performance leader in chip design. However, I think they rested on their laurels. Then they either lost key talent or stopped investing as much in r&d. Which has allowed Apple, AMD, Qualcomm to step up their game.

Apple likely would have stayed with a Intel if they haven’t been so stagnant and continually missed deadlines of their own to get off the 14mm process. Intel is a great company and I hope Intel will use this opportunity to realize they need to invest for their future.

They definitely did stagnate, and it was incredible to see AMD catch up to them, and then take the lead as if Intel is stuck in cement.

Though, in all fairness, we should also be honest enough to admit that not all of us actually use, or need, their computer's horsepower to its full potential.

I mean, I'm totally aware of the pros and cons of 14nm, 7nm, 5nm etc. especially in regard to power consumption or performance per watt.
Point is, if you're an office worker like my wife, and spend your days working with Excel, Word and Outlook, even a 14nm Celeron or i3 is enough.

The touch bar will probably vanish at the same time the whole screens become touch screens.
Which will NEVER happen of course, according to Apple ;)

High end 13” and the 16” will likely be M1X at the minimum, if not 2 different versions. M1X in high end 13”, M1Z in 16”.
iMac M1T or even more nomenclature than we’ve seen with A series.

Also, with development in-house, I expect near annual updates of M series just like annual fall update of A series. And each Mac will probdbly start to update very close to annually because they are not waiting in Intel. This will be a huge benefit in the coming years of the switch to Apple Silicon.

M2 will hit, followed by refreshes of M2X, M2Z, M2T, annually form their previous update

Personally I'm more interested in the 14.1" screen size part than the mini-LED. A bit more screen area while keeping the portability of the 13" will make more difference to me than a modest update in display technology.

(Of course with my current MBP being only 2 years old it will be a while before I update anyway. But at least the next update is shaping up to be significant when it comes).

Every independent tests have validated that the 12 Pro Max screen is the best screen ever. They went as far as qualifying it as indistinguishable from perfect.
There must be an issue with your wife 12 mini, it does happen. Go to the Apple Store and get it swapped.

I heard from our Tim Cook user in desgise, that until WWDC all the macs will be under M chips

for a smartphone/mobile device, not the best from any display on the market...i mean iphone 12 pro cannot compete with the 6k XDR display...because those from display mate never test those kind of displays for professionals
Or the display from the new S class and so on..Also i bet they didnt tested the new micro-LED Samsung Tv displays
Again, iphone 12 pro is the best display from all of the displays they tested

This Touch Bar crisis should be over by now. I f you don't like it you can use it at a very minimum and it's a no-brainer.
  • I need a clicky tactile F5 key to run debugger
  • I need a clicky tactile F10 key to step over
  • I need a clicky tactile F11 key to step into
It’s over in the sense that I’ve not purchased two MacBook Pro’s in the time it’s taken me to purchase two Dell XPS’ because of this very reason.

"Intel has been making processors a very long time. not Apple"

And Motorola, Ericsson, and Nokia (the tech giants collectively known as MEN in the cellular telecom industry) had been making mobile phones a long time. Not Apple.

Anybody still into Motorola/Ericsson/Nokia phones today?

Samsung/Android uses higher contrast, whereas Apple uses more natural tones. The higher contrast makes it look more appealing than the flatter images that Apple gives off. That being said, higher contrast means less colors/accuracy.
