All of this talk of MBP's next week, but without mini-LED are out to lunch. They just launched a mini-LED display in the iPad Pro and branded it a "Pro XDR display." There is pretty close to zero chance that Apple is going to launch Macbook Pro's without a "pro" level display.

Just like they won’t release it without their pro line Touch Bar?

XDR is not a pro feature it’s a name of their miniLED screen tech…

iPad Pro is the product XDR is an extension of the product name.

Pro Display is the product XDR is the display.

Plus it’s actually marketed as Liquid Retina XDR, there is no pro in the title.

OLED or SUPER RETINA XDR as apple calls it was a feature on their pro iPhones but it is now on all models.

By all reports, touchbar is going away. It's not like it's going to be on another product. It won't exist anymore.

XDR is something Apple is clearly branding as a pro feature. I'd bet money that the soon to be announced MBP's are going to have the pro XDR display. It just might be a few months.

I think at this point they won’t ship with an XDR display and the M1X will be the pro feature, if XDR was a pro feature that wouldn’t explain why the Super Retina XDR is now on the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12, they are not ‘Pro’ iPhones yet feature an XDR display.

It’s just all marketing, XDR is just Apples name for a screen tech, and if the rumours are true that the iPad Air is getting Super Retina XDR or OLED, why is the iPad Pro only getting Liquid Retina XDR when that is less pro than Super Retina XDR.

The XDR screen tech in itself is not being marketed as a Pro feature, if that was the case both sizes of the iPad PRO would have had it, but as it wasn’t ready the 11” never shipped with it, so does that mean the 11” iPad Pro is not a Pro device because it doesn’t have Liquid Retina XDR??

If the Liquid Retina XDR displays arnt ready for the launch of the MacBook Pro, Apple simply won’t ship them with it… just like they never with the 11” iPad Pro.

Yes, the small ipad pro not having mini led still leaves some hope for at least the 14" announced next week and shipped beginning summer, but really getting quite scary :(
really need to change my 2016 one !

That could very well happen, having only 16” having miniLED seems plausible… a scattered release for both models, happened with the iPhone, so easily could happen here…

14” shipping in July, 16” shipping August/September

Wanted it to ship 1 month from WWDC. But if it's 3 months off, will give me time to save for a better modal.

I really don't care about MiniLed though. I just want them to retain or lower the price relative to the Intel Macbooks.

Why does everyone seem to think Apple will release new MacBook Pros next week? How often does Apple release new products at WWDC? It’s normally a software event. From a marketing standpoint it’s not a good idea to release a big name product during an software event when software has a hard enough time getting the media excited the way Apple wants.

I'm normally pretty pessimistic, but there are a # of strong reasons MBP's are likely to appear:

1. It's not "normally" a software event. At least 2 or 3 previous WWDC's included hardware. Additionally, if ANY Apple product made sense to announce to developers, it is laptops.
2. Supply chain rumors have indicated that silicon could be ready by Q3
3. New rumors indicate that mini-LED could be ready by Q3
4. Model numbers hinting at 14" and 16" models have appeared in code
5. Leaks of 14" and 16" chassis have been out
6. The 16" mbp is now ~1.5yrs old. Badly due for a refresh. Hasn't been this long between models since 2014 -> 2015

All of this adds up to a release soon. One major missing factor is leaked geekbench results, though. It's possible Apple is being more careful this time around.

I'm like 80%+ confident that we'll at least see a 14" MBP here. Most curious to see if we also see the upgrades to mac minis and iMacs. Mac pro likely to come later IMO. Will be really interesting to see how they segment the 14", 16", iMac, and mac pro.

Most interesting/annoying bit would be if initial models ship with normal LCD's, but then they add mini-LED in 3-6 months.

I was really hoping to hold off replacing my 2016 MBP until the 2nd generation of AS in the MBP but the rumours are really intriguing and my laptop is feeling a little long in the tooth these days. However…

Wishing there would be an option to keep the Touch Bar as I find it helpful particularly when using software I am less familiar with but rumours make it seem unlikely. For all the Touch Bar haters out there why couldn’t you just change the Touch Bar to Function keys in System Preferences the way you have to on All Macs including those with physical function keys? I have never understood the hate given the fact the workflow was essentially the same. Well, except with the Touch Bar I can program the desired behaviour per application and that is awesome.

And losing a USB Type-C connection, which can be used for just about anything, for an HDMI and a SD card slot fixed to one side, that makes no sense to me. It seems a step in the wrong direction. I keep hoping the rumoured return of MagSafe will offer more functionality than just power, maybe allowing it to be a port to a dock on my desk with TB support. I am likely to miss that 4th USB Type-C connection far more than I will appreciate the built in HDMI. When I am at my desk almost everything is connected through a dock so that I only have to unplug one cable. When I am on the road or teaching I seldom have the option of connecting through HDMI and 50% of the time the built in connector will be on the wrong side of the computer. Sigh. For me this reversal is a negative but I appreciate for some they will be happy.

But I would be very interested in the miniLED and, of course, the AS. Hoping AVID will recognice the necessity of writing a native version ASAP because then the vast majority of my daily software will be just screaming natively! Hopefully these will make up for some of the loss of functionality in the retro port design.
No. Touchbar is an atrocity. I want to be able to touch-type volume & brightness controls without looking or remapping to some obscure 3-key pattern.

As for the changes with HDMI/SD card, I think they make sense, though I do wish they maintained at least 1 more USB-C port.

- Magsafe = power
- 1 USB-C/TB = monitor
- 1 USB-C = mouse
- 1 USB-C/TB = external SSD since Apple storage pricing is pants-on-head ridiculous
- would be nice to have 1 more USB-C for thumb drives or other accessories

It seems inevitable at this point, but I personally like the Touch Bar. Going back to physical function keys seems a step backward. I'd like the entire keyboard to be dynamic, though somehow with keys that have physical up and down travel.

Apple will want the performance of the next chip to drop like a bomb. I think they will be willimg to announce the product early, to have full impact at WWDC, rather than keep it under wraps but have the performance leak. Historically they have been pretty good at keeping Pro products secret, but also to launch them early (which is probably how they do it). I’m optimistic that we will get some absolutely jaw-dropping performance graphs at WWDC, then the products will come out in Q4 earliest.

I want a 6’ MacBook that I can carry around like a surfboard, with a trackpad that is larger than the current MacBook.

XDR is not a pro feature

It is, right now. You only get it in the Pro Display XDR (which, if we have to argue over whether that's pro, I don't even know) and the iPad Pro (which is very clearly the high-end iPad).

it’s a name of their miniLED screen tech…

No, it's a name of "we reach sufficient dynamic range through whatever backlight we can throw at this that we're willing to call it XDR". On the Pro Display XDR, the solution is a bunch of very hot, very bright LEDs, and on the iPad Pro, it's mini-LED.

Don't be shocked if they also call their future micro-LED displays XDR.

So how come the non-pro iPhones have their Super Retina XDR displays? They are not pro devices yet have a better display tech than both the Pro Display XDR and the iPad Pro (2021).

The issue is that XDR displays have not hit the Mac line up at all, therefore it is not a PRO feature of that line up at all at this point.

If Apple release an LCD MacBook Pro, the Pro features of that set up will be additional ports, a faster chip, 1080p Camera and probably other bells and whistles.

If we went off Apples entire product line up, yes their most PRO display is the Super Retina XDR or OLED, followed by the Liquid Retina XDR or miniLED.

So technically only the iPhone line up has their top end PRO display, followed by the iPad line up currently having their second mid tier PRO display.

Just because these devices have it does not mean that in order for a Mac to be deemed a PRO device it has to have either of them, just having the faster chip, additional ports and 1080p camera is more than enough to deem it as a high end Pro device.

On top of this, the base line MacBook Pro only has an LCD display but is still classed in Apples eyes as a Pro device, even though it isn’t as it’s just a very marginally better Air, if anything it should be called the MacBook Air Max lol.

I know what you're saying, but… it absolutely is — hence the Pro Display XDR.

I don't think Apple thinks of it that way at all. On the contrary, I suspect they think of mini-LED as more 'pro' than OLED, because it has more predictable, accurate color, which is useful for markets their pro Macs sell towards: photo editing and video post-production.

That's why the high-end iPads never went OLED, and instead are now going mini-LED, and that's why MacBooks Pro will, too, go mini-LED once that becomes feasible.

Yes, the low-end Pro is barely a Pro. It really only exists to say the Pros start at $1299, which they basically don't.

(It is, however, a better choice for pro workflows. Due to its fan, it can sustain high performance better than the Air does.)

Yeah I fully understand how Apple deems their Liquid Retina XDR displays as a Pro screen tech, but, what I am trying to say is that if Apple cannot get their hands on said displays in large enough quantities they will happily release the high end pro line without it, as according to leaks it already has a load of features going for it:

-Larger screen on smaller model
-1080p camera
-More ports
-M1X
-Probably crazy battery life
-Refreshed design

Apple always think long term, and unfortunately will maximise their on going profit margin, and it quite easily makes business sense to release it without miniLED this year, then refreshing it in late 2022 with the exact same design language, an M2X and a miniLED display.

Oh, absolutely. They think (and I agree) that even without better screen tech, there's plenty of upgrades to be had to ship this.

I would absolutely buy an MBP with M1X (heck, even M1) and 32 GiB RAM alone. Better battery life, more ports, better camera, new display tech, etc. are cherries on top.
