No. Touchbar is an atrocity. I want to be able to touch-type volume & brightness controls without looking or remapping to some obscure 3-key pattern.

As for the changes with HDMI/SD card, I think they make sense, though I do wish they maintained at least 1 more USB-C port.

- Magsafe = power
- 1 USB-C/TB = monitor
- 1 USB-C = mouse
- 1 USB-C/TB = external SSD since Apple storage pricing is pants-on-head ridiculous
- would be nice to have 1 more USB-C for thumb drives or other accessories
That is exactly my main issue for the touch bar.

Remapping isn't the problem.

The problem is that it isn't a tactile one-touch for the commands I use most.

When I wake up groggy in a dark room, and I can't see the letters on my keys, I need to be able to press ONE key to backlight my keys.

When I'm in a library, and suddenly a notification or sound begins playing unexpectedly, I need to be able to press ONE key to silence my Mac.

When I go outside with my Macbook in one hand, and the screen brightness is too low to see in sunlight, I need to be able to press ONE key to up the brightness. I need to do this without looking down to make sure my finger has activated the touch bar display, tapped the small left-arrow arrow button on the touch bar to expand the sound controls, and is positioned on a tiny brightness slider knob so I can adjust it. Too many touches, visual checks, and hassle. If I'm paying $2000+ for a laptop, I expect to do without the hassle.

The touch bar is too complicated for its own good. Keys just get the job done much faster, with far fewer touches or visual checks like looking down.

Ouch. So it's going to jack up the price for a feature I don't want. The blooming is not going to look good in dark mode. (Unusually, I hope they retain the touchbar though! ;))

This WWDC has the makings of the biggest let down in WWDC history. When Apple announces nothing special for the M1 iPad (which they won't) and then they don't announce new MacBook Pros (which is certainly possible) its going to be a bloodbath in here.

Oh, absolutely. They think (and I agree) that even without better screen tech, there's plenty of upgrades to be had to ship this.

I would absolutely buy an MBP with M1X (heck, even M1) and 32 GiB RAM alone. Better battery life, more ports, better camera, new display tech, etc. are cherries on top.
100% a very worthy upgrade in my opinion and for those who need miniLED they can always wait and upgrade next year or sell/trade in this iteration for the better screen tech.

Personally I would be more than happy if what I listed is the upgraded model, and would be fine with it for the next 5 years at least

I’ll just wait till WWDC and then I may get interested. Rumors are just rumors and are all over the place. Not beneficial to me except those that thrive on them. 🤪

If they do this, it won’t come in without a price bump
It could quite easily release without it, with the option of upgrading the display for an extra $100-$150 (those who opt for the upgrade will have a longer shipping time however), Apple know not everyone will want the miniLED display, me personally I am happy with their LCD display.

Apple supplier Global Lighting Technologies will begin shipments of mini-LED display components for next-generation MacBook Pro models in the third quarter of 2021, according to DigiTimes, which cited industry sources.

A paywalled preview of the report was shared with subscribers today:The full report should be published by tomorrow, and we'll update this post if there are any additional details of note.

Apple is rumored to be planning new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, each with a mini-LED display and an improved iteration of the M1 chip. The notebooks are expected to feature a new design with a flatter top and bottom and more ports, including the return of an HDMI port, SD card slot, and a magnetic power cable. Rumors also suggest the Touch Bar will be retired in favor of physical Fn keys.

In line with the new iPad Pro, mini-LED backlighting would allow for higher brightness and improved contrast ratio on the new MacBook Pro models.

Multiple sources have claimed that the new MacBook Pro models will be introduced in the second half of 2021, but leaker Jon Prosser recently suggested that at least one new MacBook Pro model will be announced at WWDC next week.

Yeah but anything more than $200 would be weird imo cuz they will most probably keep it on next year’s base models(if they get updated ofc) and the 12.9” iPad Pro’s price bump was only a $100

Yeah, we could just see it as an optional upgrade this year for an extra $100 and next year it coming with them regardless when the M2X or whatever the chips are going to be called is put in them.

Wow, somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and sure spoiled my coffee break. If you are right there will be a FLOOD of M1 iPad returns if Apple drops the ball on iPadOS 15...

I’m sorry, but you are going to be disappointed if you think there is going to be some revelation with iPadOS 15 and the M1 iPads. There might be some pro apps made available, but the OS will remain unified through all iPads regardsless if they are Pro or not.

I’m very happy with my 11-inch 2021 iPad Pro, but it’s not clear to me what makes it a ”Pro” model if it has no additional capabilities beyond the non-“Pro” models now and none are planned in the near future.

If they preview it, there must be something about it’s architecture that developers need to know about. Don’t get hopes up that it will be released anytime soon. It is clearly going to be a fall release.
No, wrong. It's clearly going to be a late July/early August release. They know there is pent up demand for these and they want to ship them as soon as possible.

I've experienced the iPad mini-LED in pitch black - and I'd gladly welcome this kind of display on a laptop.

I don't care about Mini-LED, just put the M1 in the MBP 16". That's all I want. 600 days without an update, come on Apple!
That's not the way Apple works. The 16" and the 15" before it always got the better CPU and GPU. Dell might make a large screen low end machine, but Apple won't. There have been two or more levels in the larger screen with integrated graphics and discrete graphics, but the CPUs were always better, so don't expect a base model M1 in a 16". There could be a M1X and a M2 model 16" where the M2 has more GPU cores. I'm just making up names, don't too excited about that. There could be two versions of a M1X, one with 10 GPU cores and one with 16 GPU cores.

does anyone know if the 14" macbook pro will lack features from the next 16" macbook pro? i really hope that the 14" has miniLED, all the ports, and a 2 fan system. if anyone didn't know, the baseline 24" iMac only has 1 fan and it was a clear disadvantage over the 2 fan variant.
Frankly, recent tests show the 2 fan models are not a big advantage over a 1 fan model iMac. I think a future iMac will only have two fans.

...and available on Air as well.
The Air is not targeted for a customer with needs like that. Remember 32 GB of RAM is like 64 GB was on Intel and a MacBook Air was never equipped like this. Maybe a MacBook Pro, but sorry, I don't see it on the Air in the near future.

That’s always annoyed me, since I want powerful cpu but I also want a light laptop. Doesn’t everyone want that? Apple should give consumers choice by separating the cpu from the screen.

The weight difference between the Air and the 13" Pro is minimal. The 13" MacBook Pro is already pretty light among the competition. Considering the fan and the brightness and the Touch Bar, the 13" MacBook Pro is a pretty good compromise for something a bit off the base model Air. The rumored 14" with better processor and more ports should satisfy for the higher end small model still supported today by the Intel models. You may recall that the low end Pro had old technology but had reliable cooling and the high end was problematic. Hopefully with the power efficiency of the Apple silicon that even a higher end 13" MacBook Pro will be good to actually use. That said, I don't have anyone waiting on a 14" MacBook Pro, but there are people waiting on a 16" model. More professional uses or just plain want the bigger display. Still got some folks clinging to their 17" models. I tell them the 16" Retina shows as much as the old 30" Cinema HD display. You might say get a Mac mini and a 17" monitor, but they don't want that either.
