^ So it's just women who were suddenly Sox fans? I doubt it! I know more men than women who were suddenly Sox fans. Sox fans are like Cowboys fans, somehow it's just cool to say you're one. ;)

I have liked the Sox since the mid-60's with Yaz and company
I listened to the '67 series with the Cardinals on my transistor radio at school
The picture of Conigliaro on the cover of SI with his eye is still a classic

"Pink hat" is a general term, not gender based..It's a fan that jumps on and off the bandwagon at the drop of a hat. It's a fan (male or female) that thinks a "hit and run play" is a car accident...There's nothing "cool" saying that you're a Red Sox fan. Let them suffer for 30+ years of heartbreak, then they can talk about a "coolness" factor...

And long live Tony C!! What a career he would have had,had it not been cut short.

It's been a joy watching all the pink hats jump off the Sox bandwagon this week. These are the ones that jumped on the morning after the Sox won in 04, weren't even alive when Dent's HR sailed over the green monster and believe that Buckner lost the 86 WS,lol..Listening to them on sports talk radio has been great entertainment.
It's going to be a fun final several weeks of the regular season coming up. We'll see if there's a surprise team that gets hot at the right time and rides it to the post season..

So basically, you're welcome for getting rid of your Pink Hats :D

It really does get old really fast with them. Good riddance I say.

It's just a general term as foto said. Alas though, Pink hats (the actual hats) in general piss me off.

Exactly.

Tony Conigliaro was a sports anchor in San Francisco for KGO TV in the late 70s through 1981. I always felt awful for the run of lousy luck he had - he did not deserve it. Hope he's in a better place now.

They know a winner when they see one! At some point doesn't a young California baseball fan stop and think "Shouldn't I root for a team that's won a World Series since my dad was born?"

Frontrunners, glory hunters, pink hats, whatever you want to call them -- they're the lowest of the low. Pick a team and bleed for them 'til you die.

The Giants haven't rewarded me yet, but the 49ers and Manchester United have picked up the slack. :D

Yes,thank you.Even though it took a four game sweep to do it!!!

His life was a quite a story. From bottom to top to rock bottom....

And I agree, stick with your team through good and bad.Live and die with them...

I do have a confession. When Joe Torre signed with the Dodgers, I've been attempting to follow the Dodgers more. I'm a Yankee Fan until death, Dodgers are my NL team (Cubbies too, only until they win a World Series. But let's be honest everyone wants to see that happen).

I ain't no Pink Hat, so don't even try it :D :p

Oh, you're quite welcome. Do let me know when you want that to happen again. It can certainly be arranged :D

Let's let Sox inch a couple games closer. This way it gets their hopes up, only to have them dashed again..I'm in it strictly for the schadenfreude:
schadenfreude
–noun
satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune.

I think the term you're looking for is masochist

masochist

-noun
• (in general use) the enjoyment of what appears to be painful or tiresome

I kid, obviously. No way would I advocate rooting for a team based on what they've done in the past. Although the number of Yankee fans across the country who have never been to NYC would indicate that it happens a lot.

Twins are honestly not going to make it to the playoffs this year, imo.

One of the major reasons for this is the destruction of our pitching. Glen Perkins and Scott Baker both have serious attitude problems, Blackburn has done good but the past couple starts has gotten whomped on, Liriano went from a 98-mph fastball, best slider in baseball pitcher to 91-mph uncontrollable fastball, above average slider pitcher, and honestly I don't think getting Carl Pavano is going to do much of anything.

The only way I see the Twins winning this year is if somehow we catch momentum, and get a huge winning streak like '06. SOMETHING needs to happen. Someone needs to go on a hot streak, and not the usual of either Mauer or Morneau. Whether it be Cuddyer, Span, Crede, I don't know, but someone needs to pick it up, and our pitchers need to grow a pair.

I would actually be quite happy if Bert Blyleven got to replace Rick Anderson as pitching coach after next year if our pitching doesn't get better. I will give Anderson until the end of the 2010 season to either fix our pitching or be gone. Blyleven knows what he is talking about, he was a great pitcher in his time unlike Anderson, the players will respect him unlike Anderson, and he was the pitching coach for the Netherlands, a team that was expected to lose in the first round but made it far, mainly on their pitching thanks to Bert.

I'm not giving up on the Twins yet this season, Twins always seem to come through in the most unpredictable of times.

Evil Empire Yankees Keeps Kids Up Late At Night

Eleven ghostly-pale XP campers took the field, including Yuxnier Beguebara, who is coming up on 71 operations, and Kevin Swinney, who has had over 200, and the rest of them, grinning through faces operated on so many times they seem to be covered in plastic. Feel sorry for them if you want, but they have one thing most kids will never have: For one night, the Yankees' field was theirs.

hah, I noticed I contradicted myself right after I posted, but the Twins always seem to come through SOMEHOW. Plus our division being the worst in baseball helps.

CHICAGO -- The man who may have thrown the beer at Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino during a game Wednesday at Wrigley Field turned himself in to police on Thursday.

"We are talking to someone who has turned himself in," Chicago Police Department news affair officer John Mirabelli said Thursday evening. "Our investigation is continuing."

Victorino filed a report for simple battery after the incident.

"I just think he should be held accountable, that's it, nothing more than that," Victorino said before the Phillies played the Chicago Cubs on Thursday afternoon. "... But it is what it is. It's not like the first time I've seen it happen [at a ballpark]."

Cubs chairman Crane Kenney apologized in person to Victorino before the series finale. Cubs manager Lou Piniella and general manager Jim Hendry also offered apologies.

"That really ticked me off, to be honest with you," Hendry said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy" show on ESPN 1000. "There's no place for it. The Phillies are a good ballclub, and Shane's an outstanding player. It wouldn't matter who it is.

"You're risking a very dangerous thing here, if the beer splatters in his face and he misjudges that ball and it hits him in the head and broke his nose.

"It doesn't speak well for that man's behavior," Hendry continued. "We have great fans who come to the ballpark every day with a lot of enthusiasm, but something like that is inexcusable. We let [Phillies manager] Charlie Manuel and Shane know after the game we didn't think that was appropriate and certainly would look into pursuing whatever you could to sanction that kind of behavior for that young man in the future."

I'm tired of hearing about the Yankees and Red Sox, so here goes.

You know who I think has a chance of being good in 2-3 years? The Orioles. This is what I think needs to be done:

1. Sign their young outfield. Sign Markakis, Pie, Reimold, and Jones to long term deals. Markakis is already done.

2. Trade their older sluggers for close to ready major league ready prospects/younger players. Trade Brian Roberts, Aubrey Huff, and Melvin Mora. Keep Luke Scott as he is inexpensive and isn't as old and should still be good for when they are ready to compete. Keep Wigginton as he is versatile and will most likely play everyday just at different positions each day. This will probably be the biggest bullet to bite, but it needs to be done. They could get some mucho good starting pitching and infield prospects from teams that are looking to restock for next year (Mets, Tigers, Cubs, Brewers, Giants, Rangers).

3. Call up some of their own infielder prospects this September and flat out tell them they are now competing for a spot for next season, and will be competing through Spring Training. Justin Turner SS/2B, Melvin Dorta 2B, Miguel Abreu SS/2B, Joshua Bell 3B/1B, Robert Andino SS/2B, Michael Aurbey 1B, Brandon Snyder 1B are the spots they are competing for. Keep Cesar Izturis to start off the year as a starting shortstop but give others a chance to shine occasionally next year and maybe they will hit a solid performer who can take over as starting shortstop.

4. Sign a couple veteran pitchers, perhaps one starter and one reliever. Both Miguel Batista and Mark Hendrickson aren't terrible and could probably be had for fairly cheap to both 1 or 2 year deals. This would give their young pitching prospects they receive in the trades direction and influence, and won't break the bank, and also eat up some innings to keep the young arms fresh.

5. Go into Spring Training with an open mind. What the Rays did in 2008 was go into Spring Training with a completely open attitude. They didn't expect to do good or bad, but they expected to do better and get younger so they are only able to improve.

6. When the Orioles are ready to compete, sign a BIG free agent starting pitcher to fill their needs. With the money they saved on staying young for the past 2 years, and the fact that they offered Teixeira a HUGE contract says that they have a lot of money to spend. Possible options: Dave Bush, Roy Halladay, Joe Blanton, Javier Vazquez. Not only will this give them a great starting pitcher to soak in their new era, but it will show the team they are now ready to go for the gold, raising the clubhouse atmosphere to a new level.

If the Orioles do this, and Wieters and a couple of their pitching prospects pan out, I see them doing wonders similar to the Rays in 2-3 years.
