The Yankees will have to do something about Joba and the 5th starting position if they want to contend in the post season. If they will lose in the postseason, it will be on their hands, IMHO. As much as a great job as Hughes has done in the bullpen, he needs to be the 5th starter. Joba can go to the setup position. So who will replace Joba is the question? CC, Burnett, and Andy are starters that probably won't blow the Yankees chances for a WS run this year. It is Joba and Mitre.

And you need a 5th starter in the postseason because.....?

Just saying they have 5 starters now. I don't know if the Yankees plan to drop Mitre for the postseason, but Joba and Mitre have been terribly inconsistent. Hughes into Joba spot, Joba to bullpen, and Mitre back to the minors. Though I have no idea if the Yankees wanted to keep the 5th starter in the postseason would replace Mitre.

^There is no way that Hughes is going to start again this season or postseason. He is far too valuable setting for Mariano or closing.

I can see Joba getting tossed into the Bullpen for the playoffs.

Joba was just as much valuable as the setup man for Mariano before this starter BS started. Joba was better geared as Mariano's eventual replacement then a starter based on how dominant he was shutting down batters.

Joba was dominate as 1 or 2 inning guy. He does have the ability to become a starter, the Yankees are just babying him far too much and it's detrimental to him (IMHO of course).

If the Yankees were gonna put Hughes in the rotation, they would've done it by now. He'll be in the pen for the rest of the year and the playoffs.

Right now Hughes is doing a great job as a set up man, no reason to make him a starter. I could see 2 years out a team of Jaba and Hughes in the 8 9 role when Rivera retires.

I know the Yankees won't do crap about Hughes as a starter. But, something does have to be done about Joba and Mitre if the Yankees want a successful WS run.

You skip Jaba for the ALDS, move him into the 5 slot for the ALCS and WS and hope the pen and bats can pick up the slack.

It's actually easier than a lot of people try to make it. When the playoffs start, just shorten your rotation to the best three starters you've got, then use any other former starters as long-relievers, backup starters, and mop-up guys if someone gets shelled in the early innings. Chamberlain can easily be one of those. Hughes is doing so well as a set-up guy that there's no reason to change him. And Mariano is Mariano. The Yankees are in much better shape on that front than most teams that are in playoff contention right now.

...and so the Cards' ML record of 34 games without losing ground in the standings comes to an end. Sigh.

That was a disappointing game. The home plate ump was blind. The strike zone seemed to be all over the place and Holliday was safe by a mile when he tried to come home.

As a long time Phillies fan for about 30 years now -- through all the losing or tough years, I know I nearly had a heart attack and kneeled over last year when they won a postseason series -- nevermind the big one! :D

Hoping they get to the NLDS this year, and hoping the Mets (sorry, Mets fans) choke again on the last day of the season to allow for easier entry. ;)

How bout Pedro last night...:D:D:D

Home of the World Series Champs

I was so happy to see the Rockies hold on and beat the Giants last night. Hopefully we can take 3 from Arizona starting tomorrow.

I am going to laugh so hard if the Twins make it to the playoffs, much less the World Series. This year's team is the worst Twins team I have seen since 2001, even in 2007 we had a better team when we had a losing record.

That is baseball for you.

Nice to see the Red Sox buy off the umps last night. Not that the Angels helped themselves but they got some bad calls in the bottom of the 9th.

with the season winding down, i'm going to post the standings as of today of teams still in playoff contention with elimination numbers. if your team isn't on here, they are done, and if they have none, they have the inside track. i'll update this every few days or so.
