Send Lidge to the Cardinals, we seem to like closers who can't close an automatic door

You guys can have him for a couple of candy bars. We'll even throw in Mitch Williams, too. :D Both guys would probably make for great pitching coaches in the farm system -- being way too familiar with all the things NOT to do. ;)

I'm also starting to wonder if perhaps Lidge might benefit from an extended stay with triple-A ball. A send down would probably wreck his confidence and trigger anger and resentment. But it'd also take the heat off him since he'd not be facing the pressure to not blow games and buy him time to work on pitching fundamentals again and rebuild confidence while being out of the spotlight. In the majors, a year is kinda too long to waste on someone who's basically having a season-long slump.

Or at least move him into a mid-relief role rather than closer.

Your point is well taken, but who's going to close? Matson,Meyers,Pedro,Park?
Charlie's got a big decession to make...:eek::eek::eek:

Peace

first, the dodgers next win or braves next loss clinches a playoff spot for the bums. second, i think the wild card chase just got a bit interesting. i think it's going to be my braves with the biggest chance to make the playoffs, as they play the nats for 7 of the last 10 games. i may start doing remaining schedules soon...

Does Lidge just lack confidence or is he still injured?

You may see J Happ as the closer in the playoffs,or it may be closer by committee:D I don't know what Lidge's deal is,he claims he's not hurt.

Disappointing night for Cardinals fans last night. The Giants were one out away from beating the Cubs and eliminating them and they gave up a 2 run home run and ended up losing it :( We'll try to do it ourselves tonight in Colorado, if not, hopefully we'll get some help from the Giants this time.

elimination numbers

elimination numbers after 9/26. looks like the al central and nl wild card races will get interesting. the next posting after tomorrow's games will have remaining opponents and possibly hfa elimination numbers.

Bloody hell Cano though. Almost blew it. Every time I see him try to make a great play on a hard play, he blows. I know he has pulled some of them off, but when it comes down to clinching the AL East against your rivals, getting the out at first is more important then making a great play. Cano was being selfish, IMHO.

The Red Sox are the first team in baseball to win the first 8 games and still not win the season series.

That's all right. Wasn't it also the Red Sox who went up 0-3 in the ALCS against the Yankees a few years ago then closed it out 4-3 and subsequently advanced to (and win) the World Series? :D They're certainly a team full of surprising stats, that's for sure.

Then they I believe it was the next season( or was it '06?) that the Red Sox absolutely crumbled in the Boston Massacre 2.0. :D

in the al, barring any collapses, the yankees will play the central winner and the angels will play the red sox in the first round. the nl is still a jumbled mess, and matchups may not be determined until the very last second.

i'll add matchups for teams still playing for something before tomorrow.

the tigers-twins series is very important, it can either make the al central interesting to the last second, or seal the deal for the tigers as soon as wednesday. rangers can also be eliminated from playoff contention as soon as tomorrow if the angels and red sox win their games (clinching playoff spots for those two teams).

the braves-marlins series is basically an elimination series; loser is all but finished in the race (in the marlins case, they would be officially done no matter what).

I Loved todays Yankees win great day for me sports wise the Jets are 3-0 the team looks like they will win the AFC East atelast i think so i think brady is still injured or not 100 percent and i dont see anyone else maybe the Fins giving the jets some competiotion in the East. Anyway Im trying to look at the teams in the playoffs and I really think this is for the yankees for the taking i cant really see any teams currently in that can stop the yanks right now or who has a better 1-3 pitching staff? anyway I think it will be Cards/Yanks in the world series this year should be a good matchup.

You're crowning the Jets AFCE Champs in the third week in September? And the only team that you see giving them competition is the 0-3 Fins who will now be led by Chad Henne?Jesus Christ man, post first then smoke crack..You sound like some of the yahoo Red Sox fans that give the Sox the WS title because they are tearing it up in April..
As far as the Red Sox in the post season,it will depend on which Josh Beckett and Dice K show up. Beckett's making a start tonight against the Blue Jays. We'll see if its home run derby or not.And hopefully Francona goes with Lowell and Martinez..I think Tek has seen his last season with the Sox.

^I agree with the first half of your post there. I mean as much as I'd love to crown the Jets winners of the AFCE, it's only 3 games into the season.

Back to baseball. So what's up with the Sox foto, they failed to show up again to play the Yankees. It doesn't inspire much confidence if I was a Sox fan.

It's Jekyll and Hyde..You don't know which Sox team will show up. Getting swept in NY is not how you want to head into your final homestand. And I know Francona juggled around the lineup, but still, you want to end that series with at least a split. Tek looks like an automatic out,Ortiz is a shell of what he was. Which Beckett shows up?Has Dice K figured it out? Will Lester bounce back quick enough? Will JD Drew tear a finger nail and go on the DL.etc etc.. I'm curious about Beckett's start tonight. If he gets shelled or gives up a lot of hits, that doesn't bode that well for him..It will come down to pitching as it always does. And right now, some question marks with their rotation.

It's the same for the Yankees with Joba and Burnett. Burnett seems to have come out of his slump with two solid outings. Joba, they will probably( hopefully) skip his turn with the day off they have now. The only pitchers we can count on are CC, Andy, Hughes, and Rivera. The others are the ones we have to worry about.

So much for seeing Beckett tonight:
The Red Sox have made a surprising last-minute pitching change, with Michael Bowden getting the start in place of Josh Beckett tonight against the Blue Jays.

The Globe's Tony Massarotti reports that the cause is mild back spasms.

Beckett, who is 16-6 with a 3.78 ERA, was scratched from what would have been his 32d start of the season.

We should have more after manager Terry Francona's meeting with the media, so stay tuned . . .
