OK, so let's see...

Magic number: 1 for both the Phils and Dodgers, and 4 for the Tigers.

Looks like the AL Central division title is the hottest remaining race, with the Yankees, Angels, and Cardinals having sewn up their divisions. (And with Dodgers guaranteed post-season play, along with it being a virtual certainty for the Phils.)

I think I'd like to see Tigers and Twins decide it in the 9th (or in extra innings) on the last day of the regular season. I'm sure Procter and Gamble (maker of Pepto-Bismol) would agree as well. :D

elimination numbers are my job. anyway, here are the latest. i'm going to do this a bit differently for the al now since playoff matchups are officially locked in.

American League

Central Winner (see below) vs. New York Yankees (hfa)
Boston Red Sox (wc) vs. Los Angeles Angels

Central
Detroit Tigers
Minnesota Twins (4)

National League

East
Philadelphia Phillies
Atlanta Braves (1)

Central: St. Louis Cardinals

West
Los Angeles Dodgers (in playoffs)
Colorado Rockies (2)

Wild Card
Colorado Rockies
Atlanta Braves (3)
San Francisco Giants (1)

i'm starting to think the nl west will come down to the last weekend if the dodgers keep losing like they have to last place teams. tonight all but sealed the deal for the rockies though.

That beeping sound that you hear are the Red Sox backing into the playoffs.. Geez,a win or two would be nice as you wrap up your final homestand..Now we'll see which team shows up against Anaheim.

The Red Sox are being crushed 10-0 and no-hit

Ouch. Hoping the Sox are resting up for the postseason, because if they keep this up next week, could be a mighty short ALDS for them.

They really shouldn't be in a big hurry to get an early start on their post-playoffs golf practice. :p

In last night's Phils/Astros game Charlie Manual puts in Brad Lidge to get the final out of NLEC clinching game. Now that's a "Class Act"...:):):)

Peace

It is listed as one because if the Rockies and Dodgers end in a tie, the Dodgers win due to series win. So far, the Rockies are 3-12 against the Dodgers this season.

but here's my other question: a few days ago, the marlins, braves and giants were still in the race, and yet the dodgers magic number was still 1. i guess it assumed that the rockies needed to lose twice in order to miss the playoffs.

LA's magic number is still one because since then they have lost every game and Colorado has won all of theirs.

The Dodgers' magic number is to clinch the NL West. If the Dodgers lose the rest of their games and Colorado win the rest of theirs, then Colorado wins the west by one game, LA gets the wild card, and the others are out of luck. The Dodgers' magic number is one because if they win one or Colorado loses one, then the best that the Rockies can do is a tie, and as was pointed out, the Dodgers have already won the season series. LA would win the division and the Rockies get the wild card. The season series tiebreaker only comes into play if two teams who have both clinched playoff berths finish tied in the same division.

A simpler way to think about it: The Dodgers magic number is ONLY to win the west. The Marlins, Braves and Giants cannot win the west and their only hope was the wild card. The Rockies have their own magic number to win the wild card.

The Dodgers are off tonight (weird, with only three games left) and the Rockies play the Brewers. This weekend Colorado plays at LA. Unless Colorado wins out, the Rockies will win the wild card. Only if Colorado loses all four remaining games does Atlanta have a chance.

Twins need to sweep the Royals, Tiger need to lose 2 of 3 to the White Sox to force a tie.

ok, thanks. it just didn't make too much sense for a minute. btw, rockies about to clinch a playoff spot.

only one spot left. compared to the last few years, this last weekend of the season will be anti climatic. but the nl west is suddenly a race (although both of them are going to the playoffs).

The rules need to be changed so the wild card doesn't become the fall back. Make the division a more worthy accomplishment. Right now the Rockies don't really have to fight for the division since they are already in the playoffs. What are they going to gain in fighting for it, one more home game? The wild card team should have the toughest road.

^That extra home game is worth it. Home field advantage is huge and the extra game day revenue does wonders as well (especially for a team like the Rockies)

I think the WC should only get 1 home game. Make it a true reward to win the division.

I don't like that at all. You're alienating the other teams fans. From a business stand point, it doesn't make any sense.
The division winner should have more of an advantage than the wild card, especially the team with the best record. I do like the idea I have heard of adding another 2 wild card teams.
