If that's the case, make the division series 7 games then. Or we could do it NFL style. 6 teams per league, top 2 seeds have off first round. Best of 3 for the wild card round, then 7 games Division, LCS, WS.

I think the WC should only get 1 home game. Make it a true reward to win the division.

yeah, that's rewarding...the wild card can't have hfa at all already, let's take away home games. and btw, what if one year, we have a 99 win wild card team and a crummy 82 win division winner, are you saying the division winner that barley got over .500 deserves more home games than the 99 win juggernaut that just happens to play where the best team is? no, keep the playoffs as is. if the wild card is good, it will show, if not, same thing. don't artificially make it harder for wild card teams to make it out of round one, because at some point, it's 'why should we have a wild card'.

The division winner should have more of an advantage than the wild card, especially the team with the best record. I do like the idea I have heard of adding another 2 wild card teams.

nah.

i think the playoffs are fine as is (expect the whole this one counts). only thing i may consider is best of 7 first round, and to not stretch out these long breaks between series to be like nba lite, where everyone forgets that we have games to play by the time we play them. world series should not be extending to november under normal circumstances (although i heard this season started a week late due to the wbc).

The problem with the way it is set up now is teams like the Red Sox can just back into the playoffs without really having to try. If the division really meant something the Red Sox would have really gone all out to try to catch the Yankees. The wild card should not be meant as a fall back into the playoffs.

If they back into the playoffs, that means they're an easier team to eliminate. The Sox are playing horrible right now, come playoff time they need to really elevate their game.

There's nothing wrong with the Wild Card. If memory serves 6 or 7 of the last teams to win the World Series were WC teams.

But if you are the 4th seed you should have the toughest road. While the number 1 seed should get a break. I heard a idea of having a wild card playoff the Monday after the reg season ends. So you have the 4th and 5th seeds play in 1 game to decide who gets into the playoffs.

wrong. only four wild cards have won the world series, the last being the 2004 red sox. in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the wild card teams LOST the world series. 2008 featured no wild card teams. there's nothing wrong with the wild card. if they lose early, then they weren't any good.

You do. You start on the road against the team that has won the most games (unless the WC is coming from the division). Mathematically and paperwise (usually) they are already playing a tougher opponent.

Why do you need to have a 1 day playoff? If you've won more games then the next previous team, you've earned the right to be the WC.

All you're doing is theoretically tiring out the WC winner just so you can make the next teams life easier. That defeats the point of competition.

Honestly, are you upset because the Yankees have fallen victim to the WC teams?

Ok, I was wrong about the # of WC teams winning, but I was close to the # that made it there.

There's nothing wrong with the WC.

I don't care who beats who, but I do think that if 2 teams come out of the same division that the 2nd place team should not be able to take the easy way into the playoffs. If the division winner got more perks it would sure make 2nd place team go hard into the last week of the season. What we have now is not incentive to win the division. What do you get 3 home games instead of 2? It really doesn't mean anything in a short series.

Nope. I just rechecked my calendar and it is ROCKTOBER!!!!!!!

Now if we can just figure out how to beat the Dodgers. We are 3-12 against them so far this season.

Dude
Aren't you overlooking something?:p Namely the Phillies:D

Peace

YES! OH HELL YES! Twins win and pull to within one. BUT... Let's (Me mostly) not get ahead of ourselves (me). The odds are still way more in the Tigers favor. The Tigers had to face a Cy Young winner in Peavy and now it's the Twins turn to face a Cy Young pitcher in Greinke. Let's (me) just see how tomorrow goes. The Tigers could very well have it wrapped up in a matter of hours. But if the Twins pull it out AND the Tigers drop it again... Then GAME ON.

But I'm enjoying this. As a Twins fan, Three weeks ago, I sure didn't think we'd be in this position at this point of the season. This is fun.

Also, I got tickets to Sunday. That'd be awesome if it was a big division clinching thing.

Wow, your Rockies sure are doing a good job in making Dodgertown sweat. :D

If you guys win the next two games, then Joe Torre'll be in a really crummy mood and would hear it from Tommy Lasorda on the phone. I love exciting races, so Rockies-Dodgers and Twins-Tigers are definitely on my 'speed dial'!

Blue Jays fire GM Ricciardi 8-year tenure

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays fired general manager J.P. Ricciardi on Saturday, ending an eight-year tenure marked by an inability to get past the Yankees and Red Sox and into the playoffs.

"This was a tough decision and a difficult one for me personally as I have enjoyed J.P.'s friendship and his perspective on the game," said Paul Beeston, Toronto's acting president and CEO.

"J.P. has put an incredible amount of effort into improving the team and he has brought along a number of great young players," Beeston said. "However, I feel that it is time for a change and accordingly we have decided to move on."

Ricciardi, who joined the Jays in 2001, had one year left on his contract. The Blue Jays (75-85) are finishing off a mediocre season in Baltimore, with the team embroiled in locker-room unrest with manager Cito Gaston.

The Blue Jays said assistant general manager Alexander Anthopoulos will assume Ricciardi's duties until a permanent replacement is found.
Calls seeking comment from Anthopoulos and Ricciardi were not immediately returned.

Ricciardi's firing was widely expected. He had been criticized for poor free agent signings and off-field missteps.

al central will come down to the last day. i put elimination numbers on both teams now. dodgers won the nl west, so the nl playoff matchups are all set.

Wow, the Tigers are gonna need a grand slam to win at this point. Top of 9th inning, White Sox at bat. Score currently 4-1 in White Sox's favor.

Wow. Top 9th, 0 outs, bases loaded (White Sox on base).

Hmm. 1 out, 5-1 White Sox... (and bases still loaded.)

Looks like the Tigers escaped top 9th without further damage; good job to their closer on that score. Still a chance for their hitters to do some damage.

Bottom 9th... Tigers at bat. White Sox pitcher walked Guillen after loading the count along with some fouls. 1 out. Inge at bat now. Let's see if they can make it a competitive game.

Hmm. 2 outs now...

Well, looks like 5-1 was the final score. Sorry, Tigers fans.

Looks like the Dodgers may actually win and clinch. Terrible way to go into the playoffs though.

They did -- and indeed. Ah, well, guess baseball can sometimes be like working in a sausage factory. :)

On unrelated matters, it looks like the Washington Expos.. oops, I mean, Nationals, has a 100+ loss season -- and the only team in MLB to do so. But kudos to the Orioles (some 39 games behind the Yankees) for narrowly avoiding the same ignominy! As of tonight, they have 98 losses. So they'll either end the season with 98 or 99 losses, depending on how they do tomorrow. But not 100.
