^ Seems clear cut, infielder has to be at or no more than a step away from the bag to complete a pick off. Otherwise (which I wasn't aware of tbh) it's a "balk".

The way this person layouts out the difference, makes sense. I would have never thought the 1st baseman could be charged with a balk. That was something I did not know.

Interesting take on whether MLB is slamming the door on something that seems rather new with pick-offs

I saw the game in the first half where Altuve was picked off at first partly because the 1st baseman juked and was off the bag, the second game the umps were not letting that happen a 2nd time and called a balk on the 1st baseman

Thought?

Hmpp.

News to me.

I love those Seattle alt unies !!

What I think the pickoff at first base boils down to is whether the intent is to hold the runner (prevent a large leadoff) or not. Much like the newer rules for infielder positioning (no shift) the defense can’t have it both ways. You don’t want to take away all the advantages for the offense. The fans want to see runs, or outstanding pitching, not gimmicks.

Mets extend their losing streak to a dozen, as former Yankee fan favorite Devin Williams blows the game. He faced 5 batters and couldn't get any of them out.

It's actually sad the New York City is being represented in such a manner.

Then Austin Warren came in and got the 3 outs without allowing any more runs... all while the fans were chanting both his name and M V P.

I was listening to the game on Twins radio and the announcers humorously reacted to that by saying "New York fans are the best".

2026 Red Sox are showing few signs of hope behind a dreadful offense

All of the fears regarding Boston’s offseason roster reshuffle — rooted in concerns over the lack of right-handed pop at the plate and the drain of established veteran mettle — have come to fruition.

I was at last night's game, and to say the Red Sox's offense was anemic would be a gross understatement. I know we're still in April, but the warning bells are already sounding for the red sox.

by the way, here is my awesome seats to experience the wonder of Fenway 😛
That tiny little dot way over on the left. That's the better

Nice.

The GIANTS have won 2 in a row vs the bodgers ... and they ended Ohtani's on base streak last night! And we beat him 3-0 ... he did strike out 7 though ...

Googling around it seems whispers have started taking root that Alex Cora may have lost the locker room. I was feeling that might be the case as they continue to lack any sort of offense and him telling the players they need to do better. I don't see them as a team as much as a collection of players wearing the same jersey.

Technically the Giants beat Jack Dreyer, who gave up the runs after Ohtani left the game.

Patrick Bailey is not a good hitter, but he gets some huge hits. Good pitching, timely hitting: the tried and true Giants' formula.

whelp, the Mets were able to stop their losing streak - it held to 12. All I can say is that I'm visibly upset that they couldn't stretch that steak any further

True.

Bailey is not. And he is one of the most debated players on the reddit page. You either hate or really hate him, lol.

We love his "D" but can't stand his bat. Unless it's a timely hit as you mentioned. I think most of us on the page want Susac to start.

lol This is all bold by accident.

Having an offensively inert catcher isn't the worst thing in the world, given the importance of their role running things on the field.

But it's much more palatable when the other positions can compensate for that shortfall.

Odd timing on the firing, not surprised one iota. I was actually talking with my wife that I expect him gone by mid season.

They just beat up the orioles 17-1 and to reward the manager, they fired him. I also don't believe a lot of the blame should be on his shoulders, I do question the strength and depth of the team, and that's the GM's fault. Still, from what I've read he may have already lost the locker room and given you cannot fire the team, you have to fire the coaching staff.

I don't see this move, turning the season around, but you never know

They had trouble hiring a new general manager and had to settle for Breslow - who is displaying his ineptitude every day - because the owners here have a mercurial approach to running the team. They fired or forced to flee Dombrowski, Tito, Mike Hazen, Ben Cherington, Theo Epstein (twice!), not to mention the broadcast crews of sterling talent like Don Orsillo, Sean McDonough.

I’ll always remember that Tito told the story about how after winning two World Series (after 86 years), Sox management met with him to discuss “winning in more dramatic fashion” as if they were looking to boost ratings and juice the audience a little more.

This owner has tarnished what had been one of the premier teams in the League. All they have left is the ballpark. And that’s been so tarted up that it looks like an aging FOX News hostess with too much lip filler, Botox, mascara and Bondo-levels of foundation cream. Think Jeanine Pirro. Half of the seats on the right field side force you to crane your head to the left so much you feel like you’re looking for the next train to enter the station.

There must have been some behind the scene conflict in the Red Sox organization. I bet there are other GMs who will be interested in Cora as a manager when they give up on their own skipper.

Yeah, Buster Olney on ESPN reports as much
This is a full flex by Craig Breslow, head of baseball operations for the Red Sox. He didn't hire Cora, and now he is firing him. In the long and storied Red Sox "Game of Thrones" in owner John Henry's tenure, Breslow comes out on top; this is his organization, unequivocally.
