It probably fails because the MMS option fields aren't filled in. You need the whole

"wap.cingular
wap.cingulargprs.com
CINGULAR1
mmsc.cingular.com
66.209.11.32"

thing filled in in order to successfully send and receive MMS.

True and what you really need is to have AT&T provision your account from their end of things. You can have the .ipcc file and the right type of messaging plan but unless they set it up on the network side, no dice.

For me, never had a problem getting them to enable on the betas (occasionally a new beta "broke" MMS) but it was not quite so easy with the "real" 3.0 on my new 3GS. I had to get down & dirty to get it working.

Ugh

On the phone with AT&T He said MMS is active but it isnt showing up on my phone! is there something i should tell him to do? he said he is reseting my messaging feature because he doesnt know what else to do!

im sorry im calling BS. because why would ATT just enable it out of the blue for a few subscribers!

Ok, first off, they said they used email... Essentially that is what a text message and a mms is. It's email, that is limited to a certain amount of data by the cell company so they can control data flow over their networks but yet still make money.

Here's an interesting twist... When I set the "Internet Tethering" option to ON, it asked if I wanted bluetooth or USB only. I selected USB, as I have it connected to my MBP via the cable, then the "Network Preferences" pane popped up on my MBP, showing the new connection. Then, the screen blacked out on the iPhone, and when it came back on, the "Internet Tethering" setting was gone! See the screen cap below...

Can you post a screenshot of you general>about section. So that it shows Version and Carrier?

How do they provision your account

huh, that's weird... I originally downloaded the new AT&T ipcc file and tried to get MMS to work, but it always gave me the red ! and I never tried tethering, but just about 30 mins ago I decided to restore my phone to get rid of the AT&T 5.0, now I am back to the 4.0 and I do not have the "enable MMS" switch or the carrier network settings BUT I do have the internet tethering option. So I figured I'd try it out, it WORKS! I disconnected my airport on my MBP and enabled tethering through USB and my Adium reconnected and I could use Safari so then I tried it without WiFi on my phone, and it still worked over 3G, I didnt keep it connected long because I dont know if AT&T will charge me or not. I tried both through Bluetooth afterwards and it didnt work.

And Chris, mine hasn't disappeared, yet at least. Has this happened to anyone else?

edit: Oh and this is a 3G btw

Ask him if he can remove the option to get MMS by links.

For everyone who calls ATT, make sure you even have to little camera in the sms box before you call.

The same EXACT thing just happened to me!!!

Tethering option... GONE, working on it exactly as you described.

Weird.

I live in Delaware and just spoke to AT&T on the phone, The women I spoke to apparently also is a new 3GS user and she informed me that in my area MMS will be available around early to mid July but she has received calls from people in NY, NJ and Boston who has MMS available to them right now. She told me that I was the 5th person to call today inquiring about MMS on the iPhone so apparently macrumors people are flooding the call centers. I have the MMS plan but i have restarted my iPhone and synced it with iTunes and still have no option for MMS :( guess I still get to play the waiting game and keep using MMS buddy till July . It seems that AT&T wasn't completely lying when they said they have to update everyones account and those who were in the first batch of updates are already seeing the progress.

I followed all the instructions on the krillr blog yesterday.

Put my sim in an old razr and made sure I could send/receive pics.

Then I put the sim back in my iphone and it would work for about 5-10 minutes. Then, it would stick at 90% and get the red !.

I repeated this 3 times...same result.

Still on the phone

The AT&T Guy has no idea what to do lol..he keeps trying new things and nothing is working :(...at least he is being helpful :)

Just to re-iterate the requisite steps to get MMS working:

1) You must have the right carrier bundle file on your iPhone. It's posted in this thread.
2) When you have the file, you must install it on your iphone by placing the .ipcc in ~>Library>iTunes>iPhone Carrier Support (you may to create this folder). Option-click on "Upgrade", navigate to the carrier file, load it on and re-boot. But, the latest version of iTunes no longer allows you to do this so you must first open Terminal and run: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
3) Make sure you are not on an iPhone-specific messaging plan
4) Call AT&T to provision MMS on your account. Do it from another phone because you will have to turn your iPhone off to have the provisioning pushed OTA. You must speak with Technical Support, not a Customer Service Rep. Be prepared to battle, though it could be easy.
5) Have fun with MMS

Here's How I got it working

1 Update IPCC in iTunes (attached)
2 Email Yourself MMS.mobileconfig and install
3 Email Tethering.mobileconfig and install
4 Input the following settings in General, Network, Cellular Data Network:

VVM. Change wap.cingular to acds.voicemail (This Is The Second APN)

(this is for the last APN)
APN: wap.cingular
User: wap@cingulargprs.com
Pw: CINGULAR1
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
Proxy: 66.209.11.32

Note: Tethering option will disappear when you try to connect to it. If you reset carrier settings it will come back but MMS will go away

Call AT&T and make them enable MMS

I don't want to jailbreak or void my warranty at all, if I did this would that be considering jail breaking or anything like that? sorry for the n00b question but I'm not familiar with any of that stuff.

I posted this on the last page. Did you see it?

Oh ok...missed it.

You do indeed have 4.0 and have the little camera! Thats awsome. I had to go though a lot to get mine to work lol.

What i said to the ATT rep is that i was sick of getting links because it got on my nerves! I told them to disable that link feature at all cost. Even if that meant that i wouldnt have any notification of an MMS. She then sent me a test MMS of the ATT globe. I put my phone on vibrate so she couldnt hear that a text came in and she said, "did you receive my MMS". I then said No even though i did. And then hung up.

Try that and let me know what happens

I really hope this doesn't mean that they are going to be releasing MMS by regions, and if so why did they have to start on the East Coast...!!

waiting for MMS to travel the country to SoCal...:p
