They're giving us 40gb of storage? Because we all paid $99 for 20gb.. Just because .mac was 10gb, mobileme is the new service, which is what we have paid for also, and that included 20gb.. They aren't giving us anything..

You paid for .Mac. They don't even have to upgrade your accounts - they could have run the two systems in parallel, but not take any more .Mac subscribers. You paid for .Mac, so they have every right to keep you on the original terms of that agreement.

MM has 20Gb, .Mac had 10. They are doubling the storage of your original agreement, with no further commitment from yourself. Yes, they are giving you something.

That is what i don't get. Why didn't they run the two systems in parallel and slowly move users over as the system proves itself? Why did they take down .Mac to migrate to MobileMe? Makes no sense and it really violates best practices for things like this. Just shows Apple doesn't know jack about being an email/data service. They should have outsourced it to Google or Hotmail... you know, people with near 100% uptime.

I'm really really amazed...
Whats happening to Apple?

I mean:
1. Pathetic Design (iDisk above is a pretty good example)
2. Horrible implementation (24 hrs since its gone and still not back yet)
3. Software Update Leaks (not one but 2... and also something as imp as 2.0)
4. Leaked App Store (When SJ himself said it to open today at 10:00)
The last and the most scariest point:
5. Microsoft like symptoms (even worse)

One sentence: Apple Is Out Of Ideas.

I am sure somebody is getting yelled at hard right now at Apple headquarters.

MobileMe isn't up. That's fine.

But .Mac has now been down for a day. That's a big problem. By now they should have rolled back so we could still at least use .Mac. There's no reason .Mac couldn't be up while they're fixing MobileMe.

I'm not an IT guy, but I guess if me.com will replace .mac, you just can't make the migration without putting .mac down. Same way you can't move from A to B without leaving A. That's just common sense.

You're absolutely right. And part of that agreement is that the service works.

Migrating you over, giving you a new email, more space is all great, but if the service isn't working all of that means nothing. I realize it is just temporary, but for some people to not have email for over 24 hours could pose a big problem.

Umm.... No, they are not giving us anything. If they didn't want to give us mobileme, they would be required to refund us, because we would not be getting the service we paid for. Thus they transfered all the users over.

Read the fine print.

Ha

But Benjamin Presnell, a reader of the blog who lives in New York, said he may switch to a different service because of the long downtime.

“This is just crazy,” Presnell said.

What's the guy going to switch to? I agree it's totally crazy. I mean my partner just had surgery and I am unable to blog about it. I could email or call people that it might be important to tell but that wont do. What an outrage!

Ok, so you know more about how to make this happen than Apple...?

Still no MobileMe

I'm in the Philippines and pay my .Mac dues through Singapore. I still can't access MobileMe on the Web up to now. It's already 10:59 am Friday, Manila time; in SF, it should be 7:59 pm Thursday.

What gives?

No but obviously every other web service in the world does and that is how they do it. Any updates to GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo! are rolled out slowly. Those companies NEVER have outages. dotMac has now been down for 24 hours (not to mention the tens of other times this year that dotMac went down for various periods of time).

If you paid for a service that has 10gb of storage and you are being migrated to a new service that has 20gb of storage without additional cost, how are they not giving you something?

OMG OMG OMG IT'S WORKING! MOBILEME IS WORKING! GO TO ME.COM NOW NOW NOW!

just kidding...i wonder how many heart attacks i just caused?

Because they A) could refund us for discontinuing the service we paid for or B) transfer us to the new service. The new service includes 20GB, thus by transfering the service to mobileme, we get the 20GB. Thus they are not giving us anything.

Giving us something would be upgrading everyone by another 10GB because of the outage, or refunding us some money (which would be pointless as it would only add up to pennies or a few dollars).

The only reason I am truly angry at this point is because I had an important post to put up on my blog about my partner's surgery. And it is now 24 hours later and I still am not able to upload any changes to my iWeb site. I don't care about all the web apps, I just want to be able to get my damn blog posted!

If you are using iWeb and have access to your iDisk, you can still update your site by publishing your site to a folder. When you are prompted to select a folder, select iDisk>Web>Sites. This will publish your site to your .mac/mobileme account.

I have already tried this and it does work!

No, if they kept you on .Mac, you would be getting exactly the service you paid for. MobileMe is not mentioned anywhere in the original agreement. If you buy it and expect a free upgrade that never happens, it's your problem. They could have let the people already with a subscription keep .Mac, and everybody who buys a new subscription get MobileMe. Apple didn't have to do anything - they gave existing .Mac subscribers a free upgrade to thank them for their support and ask for their continuing loyalty.

Oh, and .Mac doesn't guarantee 100% service. The contract allows for routine maintenance, as well as unforseen outages, such as what is happening now. Besides, most of the service is still operating fine - only the web interface is down.

I don't know why Apple didn't keep .Mac going whilst MM was brought online, although I believe it has something to do with their particular infrastructure. If they could have, they would have.

Has anyone seen this?
