I've been to bed, got up and come to work and this things still down! WOW.

This is iPhone launch day isn't it. This doesn't affect me greatly (just interested), but all those iPhone users who rush home with their shiny new toy and all the existing ones that think Mobileme looks cool... so they what?

"We are currently performing scheduled maintenance.
Normal service will be restored soon."

Soon... sort that sh*t out before you launch the product.

Does Apple ever intentionally launch a product with one of its main wins non-functional?

Only when it's cocked up and today this is a cock up.

I want to be a fly on the wall in Mr. J's office. How cool would that be? For all those thinking he's been looking weak and frail recently; I bet he's looking like a raging lion right now. Apple don't make mistakes - at least, they don't make mistakes of this nature.

“The MobileMe transition is under way but is taking longer than expected, the new Web applications are not yet online but the rest of the service is up and running.” - Bill Evans

There is your answer.

the rest of the service ISNT working

I wonder how many Apple employees have lost their jobs so far.

Probably none.

If this happened due to malicious work by an employee, they're probably sitting in front of a lawyer.

But, since this is most likely just a technical issue on a very visible software release, it's just a Public Relations job. Apple will announce the next generation Macbook or something and everybody will forget that this ever happened.

You don't fire good people because of a bad event unless they caused it on purpose.

They wouldn't have had incompetent people working on this application's release in the first place.

It's just gone badly. At some point we'll hear why. But it's past midnight local time for Apple, and they're certainly not having a lot of fun right now.

If I were Steve, I'd just announce that everybody on .Mac/MobileMe gets a free month. It costs them nothing, and it makes a lot of people happy.

I've been saying for about 2 years that Apple's quality is going into the toilet. Sloppy buggy launches, to say nothing of hardware issues.

I am an Apple person, and I spoke about this because I want Apple to improve their quality. Innovation without quality is not success.

Now this happens. Sadly, this is typical for Apple nowadays.

But it's big, public, and Apple can't hide the repairs in their genius bar.

Yes, I want my mobileme. But honestly, I am glad Apple is getting egg on their face for this.

Now, maybe, just maybe, senior management at Apple will realize what people like myself have known for some time now--Apple has a serious QA problem.

I agree, if Microsoft had done this, there'd be a Macs vs PC ad out in just a few days. I defended them early but this is really unacceptable.

We should have expected this. The logo is way too similar to that other fiasco:

We were DOOMED from the get-go!

As I said 34 pages of thread ago, this feels like the times as a child, the power went out and we would pull out a deck of cards, light some candles and have some fun.

Day 2 - MobileMe. Please.
------------------------------
I awoke today, blinking in the bright sunshine and my heart fell. Not a cloud to be seen. My next thought was on my dear companions who have for the last 3 years shared my .Mac family package. My worst fears were confirmed as I looked upon the distraught face of Edgar. Rocking slowly back and forth, beads of sweat on his brow glistening in the sun-light, and his knees pulled up to his chest. I do not believe he had slept during the night. His MacBook next to him on the ground, the iChat window open prompting him for a password. I fear he might not make it through the day.

Ginger and Charles were no better, and were now reduced to refreshing the login page again, and again. Muttering under their breath in a stream of incomprehensible metaphors. Taloula was nowhere to be seen, and as I rose to my feet I felt a chill creep up my spine. Had we lost her? Would we ever be able to get back to .Mac?

As I started to make a spartan breakfast, and stoke the Macbook updating news feeds and checking that the support pages revealed no news of the rains to come I heard screams from the distance.

"Up! Down! UP! DOOWWNNN"

I can't believe how much people are ready to complain about this.

The push email is WORKING, just not through the web interface.

If you are waiting for an email from someone that is so important, chances are you will have their telephone number, so if you haven't set up access through mail.app or outlook then you call them and get the email sent to another email address.

I can't believe that anyone would see the loss of iDisk as terribly important, slow and buggy as it was.

Apple are not excused from not getting it spot on, but do you really think they want it like this? Bugs come up when you least expect them. I had the same trouble launching a website last summer. It's easy on the outside to criticise!

iDisk and .Mac email is tho.

Actually, and it was fine all of yesterday, mail isn't working for me. In fact I have nothing working. Hey ho, the working day begins!

I shall sacrifice a goat and attend as many chantings as I can today.

What is this telephone of which you speak? What curious dark magic? Witch! I say, Witch!

I must admit I too have "enjoyed" some difficult deployments, and it does give me a little perspective. Best wishes to the Apple team, and I hope they get at least some sleep!

On what planet would it cost nothing? You don't think keeping servers up cost money? Paying employees to keep those servers up? Losing a month of revenue?

It might be in their best interest to bite the bullet and do something along those lines. It might make sense from a PR standpoint. But to say it wouldn't cost them money is comical.

How do you log in???

Maybe it's just small. Maybe it's not available. I'm a .Mac member and I'm trying to log into the new MobileMe and do not see the login option anywhere on the page. mac.com is down so no luck there. How is everyone else logging in???

you guys are completely unrealistic! granted things MAY be going badly - you sure do jump to conclusions way to fast!!!!

Wait tell 8am EST and if mobile me is still down/sluggish then you can be critical of the situation but its not suppose to be released until then anyways - so get a life! They still have 4 and a half hours to get it running smoothly.

It's working fine for me. I just sent myself an email to my me.com address using my secondary email address.

I quite agree, I have been totally amused by the amount of stress out there over this.

It is a mammoth operation and likely it is only the timing that is at fault - perhaps the launches should have been on 01 August.
:)

Mails aren't bouncing, I just can't check them from Mail.app. I will try to struggle through the rest of the day.

There are countries to the east of America that have paid their money for this service.

yes and i thought they all said the service is up and running for them... and even if not apple always tends to launch completely new services in the US first anyways..
