How many of you guys/girls wanna bet that .mac will be back up within 24 hours, and Mobile Me will be delayed, and Steve Jobs will be charged with murder, and all .mac/Mobile Me members will be given a free month of service? Just wondering.

Don
Ehhhhhh... maybe. I could possibly see that happening. With the exception of the whole "Steve Jobs being charged with murder" thing.

I don't think so.

What will happen is a fair amount of soul searching. This is a new line of business for Apple (much more complicated than .mac) and they really needed to beta test the whole thing.

As it is, it just isn't good enough, and they know it.

Do you think that they are going to offer any rebates?

Not a chance! They're changing their service entirely. It would have been nice if it had all gone smoothly, but sometimes things happen.

If you go www.mac.com it says that they're down for maintenance. People are trying to log into a service that is undergoing change and maintenance. If you're getting frustrated by being unable to log onto a service which is technically offline.......

Leopard had more bugs than all other versions of OS X put together (not that it was that many, but it was noticeable).

I'm bothered by it, but it will have to get quite a bit worse before I make the jump to OSS.

That is just nonsense. Leopard has been very stable since it's release and no more buggy than Tiger was when it first launched.

In fact, I have yet to have Leopard crash on me once since it's release. Tiger on the other hand had plenty of stability problems when it was first released.

As for MobileMe, it is clear Apple are having some difficulties, but I know they are working to fix them. They didn't want MobileMe to have such a bad launch anymore than the rest of us.

I totally agree that they need to do beta testing, but they won't do it, because no one besides Steve, the execs, the developer team, and Bob/John can know about a product before it's officially released. But you never know, they might realize how stupid it is not to beta test after this huge flop so far.

Al'well boys and girls,
it's time for me to leave work and head off home. I'll be there in two hours and I'll try and get the Mac Pro to login to MobileMe with System Prefs.

Wish 'Me' luck...

mobileme - such a tease!

LOL! They probably should not post webpages like this one then (yet): http://www.apple.com/mobileme/migrating/ , with a direct link to me.com and a big picture saying you are now MobileMe! LOL! :)

It's funny, and a bit sad, at the same time. Personally, I'd just like to see the "cool new webpage stuff". But I can wait. ;)

Good luck, but you'll probably only get in for 10 minutes if your lucky. Wait no, 15 this time:D

I've had more kernel panics with Leopard than all the other versions put together (I have run all of them from 10.0). Other than that it was generally stable.

The problems were the bugs. Automator was rife with them, and Leopard borked about half a dozen workflows I had made (and recreated them with the same bugs). These weren't show stopping bugs, but out of the way things that people wouldn't ordinarily come across.

I lost count of how many bug reports I filed, but it was more than I had in the previous six years.

Having said that, they are pretty much all fixed now.

They might as well. They announced it a month early. That was enough time to run a test that would fix major problems. Nobody ever blames you if beta software doesn't work.

In the time i've got in, i haven't found an option to change the 'from' mailadres. I don't want to use the me.com-address :(
I know how to setup my mailclient (with the forwarding) so new mail automatically uses mobileme, but sending mail with me.com webmail still uses the me.com-address........
Any suggestions?

did you a current .mac address, when the mobile me transition started? If you didn't have a .mac account that is current, you are stuck with @me.com. Sorry!

No i just want to use my own domain...

So all the incoming mail at my domain is automatically forwarded to me.com. That would work perfect. I've found this:
You can set up MobileMe to use any email address as a 'push' email on the iPhone. The first thing you need to do is set your non-MobileMe (.Mac) email address for auto-forward to your MobileMe (.Mac) account.

When you create the email account, make sure you set it up as Other (not as a .Mac or MobileMe account.) Then select IMAP as the type of account. Enter the name and auto-forwarded email address. (This is the email address that will show as the "From" email, even though you're using your MobileMe account.)

For your mail server settings, use your MobileMe settings:
Incoming settings:
Host Name: mail.mac.com
User Name: MobileMe user name
Password: MobileMe password
Outgoing Settings:
Host Name: smtp.mac.com
User Name: MobileMe user name
Password: MobileMe password
Advanced:
Use SSL - On
Authentication - Password
Server Port - 587
Now you're able to receive 'push' email from your non-MobileMe account, and reply without using the @me.com address. (You can use those same settings in the Mail App as well.)
That's perfect except it still uses the me.com as the from address when sending it from the webmail(me.com) client....

I couldn't help it and I broke out my MacBook here at work to see if anything had been fixed. So far, I am able to log out of .Mac and log back in with no problems. I can also sync my bookmarks, calendars, contacts, and mail. Not to mention, my iDisk is still working.

This bothers me as if there was any headway being made with MobileMe, .Mac probably would not be working. I have a feeling we will see the 3G launch along with 2.0 but MobileMe will be "available soon". Either that or they will scrap .Mac accounts all together and force us to start over with MobileMe. I bet that is where the hangup is at this point.

I don't think that you can change the from address when you forward to MM. You'll have to send from your own domain. In other words, I don't think that you can do that.

Then i'll use an Exchange server...
jeez, Exchange for everybody.. yeah right, but you're stuck with a stupid me.com-address. I use my e-mail address for over 10 years so I don't want to change it.. sorry :apple: .
I'd be happy if they had made a tiny extra setting to change the from-address...... that's all...

new ad...

PC: Hi, I'm a PC
mac: Hi, I'm a Mac

PC: all these problems I have had recently still upset ME.
PC: it's not fun having people critizing ME.
PC: sometimes users should know it's not always ME.

mac: PC, would you mind stop using the word "ME".
PC: why? ME, I don't have problems. Ah... Sorry... I have to go. I just received a mail from Exchange.
PC: by the way... How's the Exchange for the rest of you going? You know.. ME, I'm fine with Exchange as it is.

mac: well you are fine with exchange... ME, I'm still watining

Seriously... Apple has messed up big time. And it's not like they didn't have time for it. Why launch everything the same day??? MobileMe should have been out like a month ago. Less stress for servers, less problems...

(PS- I'll get my iPhone 3G today. I was looking forward to MobileMe. But now I'm not so sure I'll get it in time. And there are not many excuses for it not to be working)

To be sure you might want to give apple a buzz to see if they can give you more info. I can't be positive, because I've only been able to mess around with Mobile Me for 10 minutes before it crashed. But I'm 99.99% sure that you couldn't do what you want with .mac, sorry I can't help you much.

They might, you never know. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of updates/added features rather quickly. I'm of the opinion MobileMe was a quick product of brainstorming and thrown together rather poorly. It seems most of the Apple products lately are that way.

"Hey, we'll announce MobileMe at WWDC!"
"That's great! But, we haven't even started to work on it."
"So what? We can come up with something in a little over a month's time."
"Brilliant!"

:D

Edit Server List?

Is the goal like this?
Incoming mail: Personal Domain is forwarded to MobileMe
Outgoing mail: MobileMe to the recipient, but it should act as though sent from the Personal Domain

If so, and if you're using Apple Mail program, look under accounts > outgoing mail server > Edit Server List . Of course, your domain would need to have the ability to send out email!

I might be mis-understanding the issue. But perhaps this will help a bit. :)
