How to migrate old email from gmail to me.com?

I am definitely making the switch from gmail to me.com for the push and calendar syncing just like most of you. However, I want to be able to search all of my historical mail without having to go back to gmail every time I want to do that. Has anyone devised a way to take all of your historical email from gmail and send it to me.com (or .mac at this point) so I could ditch gmail altogether? I will still probably use gmail's SMTP service so I can send email from my own domain, but I want all of my email to actually be stored in me.com.

Just curious...

Push email is working on my mac right now. How do I know this, because when I send myself an email to .mac it would take a minute to get it on my MB, but when I send it to .me its instant. yall should try it out. Tell me if i am tripping.

Since Gmail is free, offers IMAP and I'm assuming will have Push eventually, I'm just having my Gmail forwarded to my .Mac account and will use Gmail as my outgoing mail server on my iPhone.

PS: I was going to post the cheapest place I found .Mac (which is valid for MobileMe) for $79 for BOTH the individual and family packs from Royal Discount, but now they are up to $90 and $95. Still a good price, but the 3 family pack licenses I bought last week for $79 each was a great deal. I'm set for 3 years now.

Wow. I bought a single user .Mac from Royal Discount about 3 weeks ago and it was only $55. I guess the MM release might be the end of finding discounted options for a while. If I had known, I would have stocked up, too.:D

My only problem with Gmail and IMAP has been that every few hours I get re-prompted for my login information (even though I have it saved in my keychain) and the login fails. I am using Thunderbird for my mail reader, though. Are any others seeing this behavior? I only use Mail.app for my .Mac account (which I don't really use), but if Mail.app works better than Thunderbird with Gmail, then I'll add Gmail and my ISP accounts to it as well and forget about Thunderbird. Either that, or forward Gmail on to .mac as others have done (although I might as well use all of that Gmail diskspace for something).

Ok so i am tripping, but it use to take longer to get my .mac mail. Now its instant. I just sent 2 emails from my yahoo account to .mac, and mobilme, and they both arrived in 1 second. It really ust to take a minute or so about a week ago.

Nope...still fetch here.

dotMac for me

All:
I almost jumped in and bought a .mac membership but resisted because I didn't see the value in it. For 69 bucks though it might be worth it for Mobile Me. Can anyone who has used .mac in the past give their opinion on whether they think it's worth it or not to get mobile me? Sorry if this is a really dumb question but can you publish your own web page with mobile me? Also, is it a one time deal where you have to get mobile me at the time of a mac or iphone purchase or is there a grace period? Thanks to any who respond.:apple:

I've been a dotmac member for many years and will try to answer your query.

1) I have 3 Macs plus an iPhone. It allows me to sync address book and calendars between all 4 devices. This was the primary reason for purchasing dotmac for me. It also allows you to sync keychains, mail rules and accounts and bookmarks.

2)Domain name hosting (newer feature). One of my websites (I have 4) is now being hosted by dotmac. That saves me $120/year which is more than the cost of the $99/year dotmac subscription. I am thinking of moving another of my sites to dotmac which will save me even more. I'm not sure, but I think dotmac can only host one domain name at a time. I hope that changes with future updates (though, to be honest, I may be wrong about this).

3)iDisk and Backup utility-Currently you get 20GB of off site storage for mail, file storage and website hosting. Using the free Backup utility, I set up a schedule that backs up all of my documents to dotmac for safe, offsite and accessible storage. I can get access to important iWork, Office and business documents from any PC with internet access.

4)iLife integration with one click publishing from iWeb. Dotmac makes publishing my website extremely easy. I can also setup and publish albums or pictures through iPhoto and share them with friends and family very easily.

5)Free dotmac member software. Apple offers members free or discounted software on occasion. This has included Garageband jam paks, etc.

6)eMail. This most people already know about. I can have up to 5 email alias with my account. I can add additional email accounts for only $10/year. I can forward a non-dotmac email account to dotmac so that I can view those emails online.

7)I can publish select iCal calendars to dotmac and have friends and family members subscribe to them.

8)I can use my iDisk as a quick and easy FTP site when I need to transfer large files via the internet that might otherwise be blocked by my ISP.

9)The changes with MobileMe only improve the online eMail, Address Book and Calendar experience.

10)Push services with MobileMe means I no longer have to use iSync or sync services with iTunes to keep all of my Macs, iPhone and iPods synced. It happens almost instantly with any internet connection.

11)One stop solution. Some of these solutions can be purchased separately or are offered for free but I find them inelegant at best or unreliable at worst. I like the direction Google is gooing with its apps but the problem with "cloud" applications is they don't work too well when the cloud isn't available. You can't use Google if Comcast or Qwest is down for some reason. I can continue to use iCal, Address book and even Mail to write emails without a connection.

Those are my top 11 reasons why I will continue to subscribe and use dotmac. It also seems to be a service that apple continues to improve over the years and MobileMe is a big upgrade that will be very welcome. As usual, expect others to follow Apples lead and start to make changes to their services to make them look more like MobileMe.

You can view some of my websites that I created using iWeb at:

www.machelp4me.com (hosted domain name through dotmac)

www.escuelaminga.org (created by iWeb, hosted through eCentral)

www.portraitsinpaint.com (created by iWeb, hosted through eCentral, soon to move over to dotmac hosting)

All sites are in the process of being converted from GoLive so I haven't quite finished adding and editing pages yet but it will give you an idea of what you an do with iWeb.

Thank you very much for your detailed response. Being able to create and post my own webpage for 69 a year has got me sold. Just so I am clear, if I have some music files saved or backed up to idisk can I access them and listen to them at work? Thanks again!

Seems to be pushing for me too. Nice

question, i signed up for a dot mac free trial about a month ago, i still have a month or so on my free trial, if i sign up for mobile me, will i beable to still use my dot mac email? Even if its through a free trial? I do NOT want myname@me.com!

edit: and if i make alias's can they still be .mac alias's? or will it only work for my original account?

it means the walrus was paul.

It means they all died in the plane crash, and the island is purgatory.

Looking forward to the launch. I bought .Mac a couple weeks ago, so I could snag the @mac.com email address. Not so big on the @me.com thing... but the service looks good.

Thats a great post! thanks.

Im particularly looking forward to #9. the .mac website was awful. The new one looks far better, especially if it runs as fast as it does in the demo videos.

I am thinking of buying MM for my girlfriend and I. Do you know if we can share calendars between one and other? Will I be able to view her calendar on my iPhone and vice versa? I am looking to purchase the family subscription. Any help would be great! :)

I hadn't realised this had come around so fast, can't believe we're updating to mobile me tomorrow .

I had noticed a slight increase in my @mac.com account speed of delivery, but I haven't tried my @me.com (I must say that I am still in favour of keeping my @mac.com address than inheriting my @me.com.) I'm also glad to see the idisk getting a space increase and some of the extra features.

I also wanted to know whether we'd have to wait for the next o/s update for all the relivent changes to icons etc to happen....

I also hope the mobile me mail online supports lower than ie 7 as work still hasn't updated yet.

iTunes library on dotmac

Yes, and...

Just to be clear. I don't back up my Music folder (with its iTunes Music library) or my Pictures folder (with all my iPhoto library files) to iDisk. Those folders are roughly 100GB and 50GB respectively. I would need to upgrade my iDisk by purchasing additional storage from apple to do this.

Having said that, if you COPY some of your music files to iDisk (as long as you don't exceed the 10 or 20GB's you have available in iDisk) you can then open and move them into another computers iTunes library. But I do want to make clear that you are not using iDisk to house your iTunes Music Library so that you can use one music library on multiple computers. That is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

Does that help?

I really hope MobileMe works better as a webapp than .Mac Mail. Mail can be so slow to load an email, process a delete, or a move, etc. It is really bad sometimes.

I hope they actually update Leopard so you can just drag and drop files into the iDisk rather than having to use an FTP program.

I've never been successful in uploading a file to my iDisk using Finder.

Sure does thank you, just wanted to make sure I could throw some songs/documents on there and access them at work, I am tired of losing flash drives :D

OK, I have a question about iDisk. Apple's video shows that the iDisk can be mounted as a remote drive under Vista. Does anyone know if the same capability exists with Windows XP?

Haven't read through all of the comments yet so this may have been answered. Yes, there is at least one web app that provides this functionality:Google provides a remote drive capability.

Don't know the details or what the storage limit is. I don't think it's as much as 20 gigs though....

I'd buy it mainly for the iDisk, but I'm curious to see how simple it will be to backup.

.Mac speed -> .me ...

The .Mac service is really slow in the UK - well the iDisk is slow anyway, I believe the servers were 5 x Quadra 950s...

Now mobileme is here, hopefully they've upgraded the servers too - maybe to a pair of Beige G3 towers or something, we might be able to exchange files bigger than 120k...
