in response to the comment about the date on the calculator, i also found on apple.com that if you go to the features about the iphone 3g and look at app store, the icon below twitter is now loopt.inc and no longer aim (aol instant messanger) as being a free application.

i wonder why and when they changed that.
they had it as aim ever since june 9th's pictures of the iphone 3g first appeared..

hmm.

anyone can tell me the difference between IMAP vs PUSH

moblie.me is going to have push...
I am using gmail on the ipod touch and it syncs just fine with IMAP..
My computer, ipod touch, and web based email all control my email.

IMAP = Internet Mail Access Protocol. This is basically how email is stored and accessed (stored on a server so all computer/devices can access it and the changes are viewable on the other devices once they are synced - or you hit "check mail").

PUSH = a method in which changes to data (email, calendars, what ever) are pushed to a device without having to be manually fetched.

With push once an email is sent to you it will show up with in seconds of the email server receiving it (as apposed to having to check for email every few minutes). A change in your calendar will be pushed to your computer rather than having to sync it to get the update. If you add a bookmark on your iPhone it will be pushed to your computer that is online automatically within second. All this data is stored on a server also - but its not using IMAP which is just an email system.

IMAP just makes it so the emails are the same on all devices by storing the email on a server.

New Zealand Data Plans

"early iPhone users in New Zealand"???

Mate, with the monthly charges at NZ$250 (roughly equal to U$D190!!!!!!!!!) for only 1GB, 600 minutes and 600 SMS (iphone 8gb to cost $199NZ) ; I reckon the uptake is going to be very small.

It's complete crap - I hope vodafone don't sell a single unit.

apple store is back up. i dont see any differences... :(

Edit: it WAS back up. back down again. there still may be a change in store (pun intended)

Edit2: Back up again and this time it looks like it's to stay. No updates.

Wow, looking forward to it going live... My .me addresses have been active since Monday morning.

"buyers will be able to pick up a year subscription for $69 on July 11th"

Where does this come from?
I only know that Amazon had a deal where you could pick up .mac 5.0 for $69.

Apple has had a deal where you can buy it for $69 with purchase of a Mac. With the iPhone 3G, we heard that Apple would also offer it as a discount when buying an iPhone 3G.

Thx for the info Mr Kim.
Called Apple Europe about that this morning, and they said they didn't know anything yet, and told me to check back after the mobileme upgrade tomorrow.

I was surprised when the .Mac sys pref wasn't replaced by a MobileMe sys pref in the 10.5.4 update. Guess we'll have to wait till 10.5.5 for that?

From a marketing perspective, Apple may want to wait and release the firmware on the 11th. If they released it earlier some who were thinking of getting a new iPhone might decide to not upgrade. Especially since most of the functionality is in the software.

taken directly from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1932

What will I need for my iPhone or iPod touch to use MobileMe?
You will need to update to software version 2.0 or later to enable push mail, push contacts, push calendar, and push bookmarks. This software update will be available """when MobileMe launches""".

Mobile Me push won't work until the new FW is available (along with all the other system updates that need to be activated). It looks like Apple Support page is claiming 2.0 will be out tomorrow night. Of course we will see if this is really the case.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

Any chance of an iPhone 2.0 firmware update along with this or will we have to wait for a July 11th launch.

Push won't work without it. So there is a greater chance of it coming out.

Couple questions

Any opinions on whether gmail accounts will be easy to (better?) forward to a me.com address for iphone usage or whether it will be better to leave as is with non-push (for now) gmail account?

Also, does anyone know if there is going to be any real "to do" lists on the new mobileme environment?

Finally, for families with 2 (or more iPhones)... if one wants to have separate work calenders but combined family calenders does one need multiple person mobileme account or can a single user account cover it?

Thanks!!

Wondering a similar thing here....
Planning on getting a family pack.
Main email = mine (since I already have .mac)
sub account 1 = wife
sub account 2 = joint for calendar, sharing photos, to do lists

Sorry if this is a dumb question.....but:
Can we have push email/cloud data for 2 accounts on a single phone simultaneously (personal and shared)? If not, is there a work around to accomplish this? I'd assume you could just sign in/out as needed, but I'd prefer to not do that.

Can't wait...

Well, at $100 a year, having a website through .mac/me is a lot cheaper than what I had before ($100 for 5 years to have a domain name and $26/month for hosting). Plus the 20gb will give me more than what I had before with the hosting plan I had. that is a big advantage for me.

another advantage is for push mail. I just hope I can use it on my Palm Centro. I hate syncing with my gmail and AOL. Everytime I sync, I always have to go back and redelete mail from the server or from the phone. It does not sync my changes 100%. I would get an iphone, but I am locked into a contract with Sprint.

Either way, I had held of on getting .mac when I bought my macbook due to all the uncertainty at the time. Now I am working with iweb to build a smaller portion of the website I used to run. I am only putting parts of it back up because people had asked for my website to come back. It will be the same and different at the same time.

All:
I almost jumped in and bought a .mac membership but resisted because I didn't see the value in it. For 69 bucks though it might be worth it for Mobile Me. Can anyone who has used .mac in the past give their opinion on whether they think it's worth it or not to get mobile me? Sorry if this is a really dumb question but can you publish your own web page with mobile me? Also, is it a one time deal where you have to get mobile me at the time of a mac or iphone purchase or is there a grace period? Thanks to any who respond.:apple:

Mobile Me 9th icon

Wasn't June 9th the day of the WWDC Keynote? That would make sense.

Finally a real sync program. the old iSync sucked except for Palm users. The so called sync right now never works. i've got 3 computers all syncing to the .Mac account... none of them ever really update.
this is exactly what i've been waiting for...
well... this and the iPhone 3G. :)

Do we get the 2.0 firmware on the 10th?

SCRATCH: Didn't see that others posted the same thing...that teaches me for not reading all the way through the replies.

Yes, yes, I know that the 2.0 firmware is supposed to be released on the 11th, BUT...from the MobileMe FAQ (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1932)

"What will I need for my iPhone or iPod touch to use MobileMe?
You will need to update to software version 2.0 or later to enable push mail, push contacts, push calendar, and push bookmarks. This software update will be available when MobileMe launches."

Does that mean we can get the 2.0 firmware at 12:01am on the 10th? :D
