All,

I think this might relate to the 9th update to MobileMe.

I tried to access my web gallery, but for some reason it timed out. I tried few of my friend's galleries, but same issue.

Anyone getting the same thing?

I feel that they started the upgrade process early to accomedate the New Zealand launch.

Edit: My sister has informed me it is working now. I still want to know if anyone encountered the same issue.

My web galleries and iWeb website (www.peters-photography.com) are both down.

I hope they fix this soon...!?

EDIT: .Mac web galleries are back up but the iWeb site remains down

EDIT #2: both the .Mac web galleries and iWeb sites are back up

Not really sure that's the problem. I've seen this problem occur with almost any large file I want to upload from my computer to *anywhere*. ISPs generally like to throttle upload speeds. Unfortunately the app gets the blame....

I mentioned later on that if I use Transmit, the whole FTP transfer is extremely responsive and I begin uploading at my max upload speed. By responsive, I mean as soon as I drag the file into Transmit, it'll begin uploading immediately and the time bar will load immediately.

This does not happen when I use Finder - it is very sluggish and takes ages to begin the upload, and the time remaining bar gives me very large times.

ok, i think i understand what you're saying. i'm new to .mac. I just saw the sync notice yesterday, and enabled it on .mac. however, it was already past the date of jul 6.

im guessing when i get mobileme tomorrow or thursday, i'll be able to start from scratch and sync everything i currently have on my mac? i've only been using a mac exclusively for a couple weeks now, so bare with me! :p i noticed all the "sync with .mac" options i had in different programs, but it's all kinda confusing. i guess because we are kind of in between the old and new platforms.

Hey it's confusing for everyone. Apple has not done a very good job with .Mac in the past even Steve Jobs came out and said that it stinked.

So with the new iphone Apple is trying to make a clean start. Let's hope they get it right this time. Potentially it sounds like nirvana but in reality your mileage may vary.

I JUST spoke with an Apple Rep and he said that there is no discount for the MobileMe service with the purchase of an iPhone. It does not apply to the iphone.

does anyone know if the stores will be closing early to prepare for the launch of MM? I don't see it being as big as the Leopard release, just wondering.

Expected, but the number of MobileMe users they'd get from both AT&T and Apple would be enormous if they did that. Plus, an iPhone + MobileMe would probably spark more than its fair share of Mac purchases, despite the new syncing to Windows.

There is nothing to prepare for. You can sign up completely online for MobileMe. The Stores just carry a small box about the size of 3 stacked CD jewel cases with a couple of Apple stickers and the activation code inside for gifts and such.

Do you think there might me MobileMe desktop software for Mac & Win appear in the next few days? OS X still has the .Mac branding.

Not quite true...

iweb is a novice app and provides a limited tool set for web design. It provides a very limited set of design features in exchange for being easy to use.

The biggest issue I have with iweb besides being very limited is the fact that you have to be very careful to not lose your website on your local machine. If you do, you are screwed.

You cannot restore your website code from the server. This bit me one time when I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. I installed the latest version of iweb on my machine without backing up the local website on my machine.

I thought that this was no big deal because I could always download my site from .Mac. But nooo, iweb stores your local website in some proprietary binary file and there is no way to get your site back into iweb.

The only fix is to completely rebuild the entire site from scratch.

The first problem may be some kind of compatibility issue with IE. I assume you are using a PC then? Except for a few punctuation artifacts, my iWeb sites display as shown in Safari and Firefox.

Your iWeb files are not stored as some kind of binary proprietary file. Your site files are stored in user>library>application support>iWeb. These are standard html files and can be backed up anyway you choose and uploaded using any ftp application. Also, if you want, just Publish your site to a folder from within iWeb, as I do, and upload using a program like Fetch.

I use iWeb because it does everything that GoLive did for me but so much easier. And since GoLive has been discontinued, I have no interest in spending any more money on a high end, over blown, complicated and hard to use web authoring app like GoLive or Dream Weaver.

Speed Test

I mentioned later on that if I use Transmit, the whole FTP transfer is extremely responsive and I begin uploading at my max upload speed. By responsive, I mean as soon as I drag the file into Transmit, it'll begin uploading immediately and the time bar will load immediately.

I did a speed test and here are my results:

Copy 15.3MB file from Finder to iDisk - 134 seconds @ approx. 150 KB/s
FTP same 15.3MB file to my website - 53 seconds @ approx. 304 KB/s

A real test would be to FTP that file using Fetch to my iDisk. I have to figure that out yet so if anyone can help me with the ftp settings, please let me know.

Please let me remind you. Don not mislead people by associating the word "FTP" with iDisk. iDisk only and only supports WebDAV!!!!!

Transmit builds in support for both FTP & the better WebDAV. Thats why you can use Transmit to write and read from iDisk!

No, I am not using a PC.

Yes the page files are standard html. But if you lose the binary file that I am talking about you can no longer open up your iweb project on your local machine.

There is also no way to get the html files back into a project again once the project is gone. You have to start over. Wait until it happens to you and then you will be pissed.

If I could remember the name of the file, you could move it and see for yourself. But it is an obscure file in a convoluted location. I will try and find it and get back to you. You need to make sure you back it up regularly, if you don't you will lose everything.

OK, the file is actually a package not a binary file. It is in your home directory/Library/Application Support/iweb and the file is named Domain. If you lose this package or it becomes corrupted you can no longer access any of your sites on the machine. You can create a new Domain file but once having done that there is no way to get you old sites back into iweb. It really sucks. I lost about 20 sites this way.
I had no idea that you had to backup this particular file. I backed up my html files, iweb application, data files, etc. but when my HDD failed I had not backed up this file and I could not use any of my past site organization or html files in a new iweb domain. There is no import option which in my opinion is a show stopper. Apple needs to make this app so that you can import past projects and data into the iweb application.

I will never use this app again. Best to write the html with a good text editor like BBedit or use something like Dreamweaver.

I don't see the value in MobileMe and .Mac

Since buying a Mac I've been puzzled as to why people pay up for .Mac or now MobileMe other than to join a fan club.

I don't want a .mac or .me email address; and I don't want to use iMail as Gmail is much better - even better you don't have to worry about sync issues when it stays in the cloud, so you don't need the sync service for your email either that .me offers!

As for iDisk, lots of others offer online storage solutions, I bet many better than iDisk and what's wrong with just FTPing to a server that you have space on.

The only other benefit is to sync your contacts because you think paying for this service is easy than putting the iPhone into the cradle to sync it!

Please do let me know if I am missing something, but I only see the service is a way of saying "Steve, I pay homage to you, here is some cash to prove it".

One other advantage is you don't have to configure anything (no typing in SMTP servers and ports etc). You just type your .mac address when installing OS X and everything is set up for you: email, idisk, iweb, all ready to go.

I use multiple computers and want to synch email, calendar and contacts to each. Right now I am (with Treo) synching with each individual computer, sometimes forgetting I updated say a contact on one computer before so all won't be the same. Mobileme will be awesome and I'm as excited about this as getting the iPhone.

One question I have is on family memberships, will the calendar on each iPhone synch to all.

#116 & 118 this thread and here

In other words, yes. You can sync multiple calendars and emails.

I just bought mobileme from the apple store. I haven't gotten an email yet but do I have to wait for the box to come to use it? Or will they have an option for me to get my activation code online?

Thanks

Use Google for email, calendar and contacts. Problem solved and you can have access from the other billion internet connected computers in the world should you wish.

I was not a .mac person... am not an apple person but I can give you my scenario as to why I will be a mobileme guy...

I have an Iphone and like the interface... I have multiple computers at work...one in my office, a few in my clinic and many at the hospital...I also use a Palm Tungsten C for my medical stuff. I have 5 computers at home any one of which I may use depending on convenience. If I use mobileme everything is sync'd. I have tried various kludge solutions and they can partially get the job done albeit with alot of wrangling. This combined with a google spanning tool should accomplish keeping ALL of my devices sync'd and give me access to files as needed.

Nevermind, I called them... I do have to wait for the box... lame

Is anyone else concerned that the transition could cause problems? Should I back up my iDisk to my computer? I feel a bit nervous with this impending transition since I don't know exactly what will happen. Like how will the push e-mail magically work without an upgrade to Mail? The only option in Mail is still to check e-mail every 1 minute, etc. Will .Mac homepages still stay on the web?

Again, something may be wrong on your end then. I just mounted my iDisk, dragged and dropped a 36MB DMG file to my documents folder. The progress bar popped up within a few seconds and the duration meter began to show time remaining after about 15 seconds. For this 36MB file, it is showing an upload time remaining of about 4 minutes (106KB/s).

Yep, consider yourself lucky. Large files often get munched in the process here, when I try to get them to the idisk. Sometimes the finder crashes too. I talked with tech support and they said I shouldn't try to move the types of files I was trying to move. And OMG using a spreadsheet that's placed on the idisk can be grueling. From what I read, this is very common, and it appears to be a problem with the finder.

This year has been the first year when I went "online" to replace my trusted planner/organizer of 14 years. I have been using Yahoo for my mail, address book and calender. I also tried Google, but to me they are one half dozen of the other so I stuck with Yahoo.

However, I had bought my MacBook right around the time I decided to put my Dayrunner to rest. It was on that computer that I organized my Yahoo address book and calender. I decided to use my MacBook's address book as a backup, in case I needed a number or address and didn't have internet access and then I decided to use iCal as a backup as well.

The simplicity and clean look of iCal really won me over and I was quite disappointed that there was no web-version of it with .Mac. Since I've heard about MobileMe, I've been looking forward to trying it out. While I only use 2 computers, I do use my work PC more often so I would love to have iCal be my primary calender. I have a terrible memory so I think it would be a huge help with not having my Dayrunner around anymore. Plus eventually, if Apple comes out with a 32GB iPhone or they open it to other networks besides AT&T, I will likely get one. I think MobileMe's push will work pretty seamlessly with one. Personally, I think it's worth $100 a year though I do plan on doing the free trial first.
