I hope they actually update Leopard so you can just drag and drop files into the iDisk rather than having to use an FTP program.

I've never been successful in uploading a file to my iDisk using Finder.

I've got to say that you might have a problem with your mac then Kilamite, because for me in Leopard, I simply drag and drop to iDisk, and it always appears in finder when I'm online.

:)

I'm not sure what you're talking about... I've never had ANY problems using Finder with my iDisk.

Maybe I should have been more specific - a file over 1MB will cause problems for me. Takes ages for the duration meter to appear, and the whole process is crap. I just tried to upload an 18MB file, took 29 seconds for the progress bar to appear, and the time remaining never shows. The file upload also seems very sluggish.

Apple really needs to implement a half decent FTP into Finder.

OK, I have a question about iDisk. Apple's video shows that the iDisk can be mounted as a remote drive under Vista. Does anyone know if the same capability exists with Windows XP?
Haven't read through all of the comments yet so this may have been answered. Yes, there is at least one web app that provides this functionality:Google provides a remote drive capability.

Don't know the details or what the storage limit is. I don't think it's as much as 20 gigs though....

What I'm asking is whether with MobileMe you can mount the iDisk as a remote disk under Windows XP? I'm already a .mac subscriber and I'm not interested in Google or any other service. Thanks.

Here's to .Mac...

Here's to .Mac...
"May you rest in peace"...
You served me well O-.mac, keeping my Mac's and iPhone in sync...
You kept me up many a night but at the end, "I mastered you"...

Now to you MobileMe...
May you serve me well...
May I master you as well...
May I "Rest in peace" and get my sleep...

Here's to .Mac... goodbye

Well since you can do that now with the iDisk Utility for Windows and .Mac, I woud assume that woud be the case with MobileMe since they are not eliminating the idisk function.

The .Mac service is really slow in the UK - well the iDisk is slow anyway, I believe the servers were 5 x Quadra 950s...

Now mobileme is here, hopefully they've upgraded the servers too - maybe to a pair of Beige G3 towers or something, we might be able to exchange files bigger than 120k...

Not just the UK. I am in the US and iDisk is not worth using for large files.

The uploading interface is clunky. A 5GB file or larger takes forever to upload and the progress reporting is all wrong. Even with a high speed broadband connection it is extremely slow.

Hopefully MobileMe will correct this glaring flaw with .Mac.

This is the way .Mac works. Your experience is not unusual. It's currently a piece of crap.

Again, something may be wrong on your end then. I just mounted my iDisk, dragged and dropped a 36MB DMG file to my documents folder. The progress bar popped up within a few seconds and the duration meter began to show time remaining after about 15 seconds. For this 36MB file, it is showing an upload time remaining of about 4 minutes (106KB/s).

Edit:

Also, while I haven't actually run a speed test to compare the two so my observations are completely anecdotal, an ftp to my website appears no faster or slower than a file copy to my iDisk. Don't know why others are getting the results they report. I'll try to do an actual speed test and report the results later if everyone is interested?

I just noticed that when...

I just noticed that when my iPhone gets/updates email that the time is 1 hour off from my central/standard/texas time? hmmmm...

Also, my mail on my iPhone is working amazingly fast today!!! hmmmmmm

I'm keeping my .Mac e-mail address. For some reason, the whole me.com name annoys the heck out of me.

How long before they change the name? I'm hoping by MWSF in January.

Nothing is wrong at my end - the response from Apple's servers is just dreadful from where I am if I use Finder. If I use an actual FTP program (i.e. Transmit) then it works fine.

The Finder is no good at being an FTP.

Gmail Pushed?

If I set up my gmail account to MobileMe, will the gmail get pushed from MM to my iphone?

You can view some of my websites that I created using iWeb at:

www.machelp4me.com (hosted domain name through dotmac)

www.escuelaminga.org (created by iWeb, hosted through eCentral)

www.portraitsinpaint.com (created by iWeb, hosted through eCentral, soon to move over to dotmac hosting)

All sites are in the process of being converted from GoLive so I haven't quite finished adding and editing pages yet but it will give you an idea of what you an do with iWeb.

Cool. However... Is it your design or is iweb a little flawed where everything is centered in the browser window, rather than allowing the content to take up the entire window. Then again, I am viewing this on a work computer - so Internet Explorer may be the problem. IE does not render websites correctly sometimes, hence why my home computers run firefox or safari.

iweb is a novice app and provides a limited tool set for web design. It provides a very limited set of design features in exchange for being easy to use.

The biggest issue I have with iweb besides being very limited is the fact that you have to be very careful to not lose your website on your local machine. If you do, you are screwed.

You cannot restore your website code from the server. This bit me one time when I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. I installed the latest version of iweb on my machine without backing up the local website on my machine.

I thought that this was no big deal because I could always download my site from .Mac. But nooo, iweb stores your local website in some proprietary binary file and there is no way to get your site back into iweb.

The only fix is to completely rebuild the entire site from scratch.

Not really sure that's the problem. I've seen this problem occur with almost any large file I want to upload from my computer to *anywhere*. ISPs generally like to throttle upload speeds. Unfortunately the app gets the blame....

Won't 2.0 essentially have to be released for MobileMe to start working? I'm not getting MobileMe, but I CAN'T WAIT to get 2.0!!!!

Going to work might be impossible, which is rough since I need the hours to pay for this thing!

Only the push part for the iPhone needs 2.0. The webapp stuff will work as usual.

No it is idisk.

Not the upload speed from the ISP. This is a common problem that has been reported by many many users. My upload speed is fine to any other site. I can even ftp to the idisk much more reliably. But if you use finder and drag and drop the transmit speed is horrendous and the progress bar lies. Apple has a problem with this functionality of .Mac. I hope they correct this with MobileMe.

It's been discussed before and is a given because a stand-alone browser won't support push data. The push service only works with iphones, macs with mobileme, and ipod touches. All other .Mac services are going away. That is why Apple is asking everyone to sync all of their browser bookmarks before July 6th.

You can still backup bookmarks and bookmarks will be pushed to mobileme macs. The only functionality you will lose will be the ability to go to an internet cafe, or student computer center, log on to your .Mac site via a web browser, and access all of your bookmarks. Instead they will only be pushed to your own devices or machines.

ok, i think i understand what you're saying. i'm new to .mac. I just saw the sync notice yesterday, and enabled it on .mac. however, it was already past the date of jul 6.

im guessing when i get mobileme tomorrow or thursday, i'll be able to start from scratch and sync everything i currently have on my mac? i've only been using a mac exclusively for a couple weeks now, so bare with me! :p i noticed all the "sync with .mac" options i had in different programs, but it's all kinda confusing. i guess because we are kind of in between the old and new platforms.
