I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. This design also make the camera hole much more visible to the eye than the notch.

Let's hope they keep the approach of the notch getting smaller and smaller & move the bar above the notch line:
Moving it higher might not be possible. The actual opening is smaller than the size of the optics behind it. So it could be physically impossible to move it closer to the edge. Then it's just a question of putting extra pixels there or not. I think with everybody moving to punch-out camera, they're afraid a notch will make them look dated.

I don’t think that the iPhone 14 (Pro) will look like this. Apple is making the notch their recognizable aesthetic. Look at icons that depict iPhones and now the new MBP design, that will will be around for years.

I’d bet on a smaller notch. They shrink the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro and will shrink it even further (and maybe make it less tall).

You’re not wrong about the functionality above the pill, but the pill looks more futuristic and pretty imo. That tiny notch looks a little comical to me.

Agreed. I'd have to see what it feels like after a few days, but I indeed worry that a pill would be far more noticeable.

I also just don't think about the notch at all in daily use, except when 1) people on MacRumors complain about it or 2) I watch a video in full screen and zoomed in (which I rarely do).

I do. Because Face ID is better on every way.

Is it? It's better in some ways, and worse in others. Touch ID would always recognize me, even at weird angles and distances.

i don't find the notch offensive. honestly doesn't bother me in the slightest but hooo boy if that's indeed what the iPhone 14 Pro models look like then i'm buying one.

I think the hole punch will be longer than most imagine it to be. Kinda like a large speaker grille cut-out.

Apple should keep the notch, until they can hide the Face ID/camera-array COMPLETELY under the screen or bezel (without making it thicker) without compromises in quality.

Under the screen will always compromise quality/security.

Because smart phones are typically manipulated with one hand. Do you think it would be manageable to reach the fingerprint sensor as large as these phones are with your thumb? Try doing that, and you’ll find out that it’s not very easy to do. That would require almost 2 hands to do that.
Thumb? Hope you got forefingers and use them properly; nobody touches side buttons with thumbs.

Opinion or fact? Unless you work in the field and know the research data, it's just your speculation.

if they can put all the Face ID stuff under the screen, kind of crazy to me they can't also do so with the front facing camera. Other phones have done that... it does take a hit to the front camera quality, but it seems each iteration is better and better and that Apple would have the R&D to really get it right.

Oh My God. Look at that notch! It's just so big! I can't believe it's just so round. it's like out there! I mean gross, look it's just so, black!

Under-the-screen always compromises the quality of camera and the security of Face ID. The difference is the latter can be offset by improvements in the Face ID sensor system to maintain the same security level but Apple is unlikely to let the compromise eat into the gains of a better camera system.
